Mission Impossible 7: Dead Reckoning Part 1 sends Tom Cruise against his worst enemy yet: ChatGPT. And as you may have expected from Fallout, the movie is pretty damn good. One of the best action movies you'll see this year, and even though it flopped at the box office a bit, that was mostly due to Barbenheimer. And since Dead Reckoning is great for a lot of the same reasons I've covered before, today let's focus on its ability to seemingly cheat time itself. The movie simply begins and then suddenly ends, without ever letting you go. So in today's Film Perfection, let's see how you can do it too.

I literally only have one problem with the movie and that is the scene where Ilsa dies. It's not because it dies but because if the "one of them will die tonight" thing. I understand that the AI could predict and account for all actions thing but felt like that part went on for a bit too long, and it was also just a bit boring. Idk, i can't explain it properly. It felt like a Shakespearean romance rather than a fate they try to avoid but can't. And yes i know Isla is the love interest but it just didn't work for me.

The henchwoman twist also benefits from Mission Impossible's core theme: anyone can change. Before this scene, the henchwoman, Paris, was unchallenged in her combat and philosophy. Remember, Gabriel is trying to use that AI to create a better world while Ethan sees through that corruption. So when Ethan shows mercy to her, it plants a seed of doubt that saves Ethan's life in the climax. It isn't subversion for its sake. The event feeds into later storytelling.
@Beastinvader

I think this human element is why AI will lose. At the end of the day, machines cannot comprehend either the human capacity for mercy and self-sacrifice, or the influence of these two on subsequent events. People are not machines. You cannot predict them totally.

@yuqipan7570
@yuqipan7570 6 месяцев назад
@@synlion that 'intangible' and 'ineffective' villain of yours is exactly what killed Ilsa. This villain, by being non-physical, has had a presence throughout the entire film, even when it wasn't there, because you can't tell when it is. The entirety of the film's events played out the way it did because of the entity, according to its plans. It was more involved in the plot than any character. In fact, the threat it poses is far more relatable in this day and age, with how much control of our lives we've relinquished to systems we don't care to understand. Ilsa dying exactly as it predicted showed Ethan that he could no longer 'Ethan Hunt' his way out of this, and that he needed to predict what the entity predicted and subvert it to succeed, but it also helps him realise that the entity does see him as a threat, telling him there's a chance he could pull it off. How is that not good writing?
@synlion
@synlion 6 месяцев назад
@@yuqipan7570 what you're describing either makes no sense or is just pure condensed copium. villains usually have presence throughout the film. that's achieved through tension, pacing and a sense of threat. look at mi3 for a good example of that. the ai being intangible doesn't make it any more present or threatening. ilsas death and the rest of the events are not the making of the ai, they are the making of the writers. she went to her death because the plot demanded it, not because the situation forced her to. her fight scene was also pathetically choreographed. your comment reads as if you can't tell that this is a work of fiction. the threat the ai poses is only relatable and scary if you've spent exactly zero time actually looking at what ai does or thinking through what ai's could and might do. i'm guessing you're in the same boat as tom cruise there, who i would bet was the one who pushed for an ai as a villain. ai is boring. ai's don't make for good villains usually, because good villains are almost always motivated by some relatable emotion. they are exciting and scary, because they act in ways we understand. an ai has no motivations other than the one it's programmed to have. they don't feel greed or rage or pain. the writers know the ai is too boring on it's own, so they introduce gabriel who is pretty effective as a villain. an ai villain that works is hal 9000 in 2001 a space odyssey. hal works because a) he makes decisions based on his programming and b) because he is menacingly portrayed by douglas rain. either your ai is scary because it doesn't care about you and you're just a necessary sacrifice to complete its mission. non human villains like the alien work for similar reasons. for the entirety of the movie, the entity is essentially only alluded to. it doesn't do much of anything except for taking away from gabriel as the central villain, by making him a pawn. all of this might even sort of work in a better movie, but the cringe exposition dump at the beginning, the uninspired action throughout and the horrible decision to kill off the best character in the franchise (when you have two characters who fill the same role - guy in the chair - but bring more emotional weight if killed) all make a bad final villain all the more jarring.

I think the turn with Pom's Jester Dragon character was pretty interesting because they also never made her a pushover. She was never just beaten. For one thing, the choreography doesn't make much sense. A character with a sword should not fight as close as possible to a character with a knife. Instead the swordsman would make full use of the extra range. Ilsa doesn't. She constantly puts herself in far more danger than is necessary, despite being a trained assassin. She also had far less of a role than she should have. She's a well respected character. She shouldn't be thrown away early on for plot convivence. A death sequence for such a character needs to be especially impactful and it just wasn't.

I loved the film and at close to 3 hrs it flew by. I was personally entertained the whole way through. McQuarrie is a fantastic storyteller in how he is able to “show” rather than “tell”, something basic that sadly too many modern filmmakers have forgotten about. And while Dead Reckoning 1 may be more “Rogue Nation” than “Fallout” (that is, the set up for a much larger payoff), unlike other properties that split their final outing in two parts it never feels like there is padding. On the contrary it feels like there was much more to this movie that resulted in having to split it in two and moved to part 2. The “failure” of the movie was the release schedule, due to the studio’s choice rather than anything Cruise and McQuarrie did.

Filmento accurately explained how they made the magic happen: good writing and pacing, keep the audience engaged by changing the emotional and power dynamics even if the setting didnt change. Introduce twists, caveats and obstacles on a micro level for the Protag to deal with. The Multiple factions chasing one character aspect is very fun as well.

I've understood what you were saying : the movie use tricks in order to have longer scenes without the audience to be bored and still entertained, but when the movie use too much of these tricks, they become too much visible and predictable by the audience and the boredom still happen. In particular in the scene with the train falling wagon after wagon. Yes, every wagon is different inside and give new threats (kitchen tools, fire, a piano...) to deal with in addition to just deal with the gravity, but it's really too much. And because at the end of the movie we don't have fear anymore for the two heroes who has survived every threats without a scratch, we don't care anymore, it's just a very very long scene that seems to never end...

Yeah, the action is over-edited. No sequence has topped the car and helicopter sequences in Fallout, probably except the mountain jump and the train climb sequences. The best fight scene in the film is the one with Paris. Fallout was incredible and DR had some very good sequences, but it dropped the ball in a lot of ways that Fallout did not. It wasted an important character and several moments that could have been far more dramatic or impactful than they were. A few of these scenes traded a heavy hitting immersive moment for a forgettable subversive comedy moment. It even introduced a character that ended up feeling more like fanfiction than she should have. I'm sure they had several different writers (pretty much a given) and I'd expect to find the parts I didn't like were probably written by the same person/people. For crying out loud, why would I be invested in the survival of a character that has only repeatedly gotten in the way and straight up tried to murder the main character for no particularly justifiable reason? It also doesn't help that first half of the train scene just shows how much better Vanessa Kirby (White Widow) is when it comes to acting than Hayley Atwell (Grace). Never before I have seen Actor A pretending to be Character B pretending to be Character A and end up having a far more likable, skillful and entertaining performance than the actor playing Character B.

Suprised so many people like this movie. Compared to the other entries in the series, this seems to me like a clear step down in quality and one away from what makes Mission Impossible what it is. It only really competes with II in that regard.

Some additional observations regarding the exposition dump scene wuth the Entity. Theere is this one Filipino director, Erik Matti, who complained about this scene because the dangers of the Entity are already established by three people, and that the scene keeps cutting to those characters. The whole point of the scene is to establish a potential villain in the room, with most of the characters there representing various branches of the government who can potentially be admired by the Entity's abilities and overexpanding reach. One person stands out. The moment that Denlinger, the Director of National Intelligence, keeps insisting in how awesome the Entity is, downplays its dangers by being dumbfounded on what it can do, and admits that he wants to control it when Kittridge calls him out instead of coming up with reasons that it is dangerous, is a clear sign for audiences not to lose track on this character. That said, this is probably one of the greatest action films ever made, although some of the action are a bit of a letdown following the well-made sequences in Mission: Impossible - Fallout.

Well said and well explained. I think Fallout is the greatest action film of all time, though. However, the train sequence in DR is the most amazing action sequence I've seen in a film in a long, long time.
@funwithtropes69

@@ComedyBros5, what I liked about the sequences in Fallout is that they are dailed to 100. The plane scene in the opening sequence of Rogue Nation? The entire third act begins with Ethan climbing the helicopter with no safety hatches and piloting the helicopter fkr real. The chase scenes in Rogue Nation? This one has multiple factions involved and is bigger in scope. The underwhelming fight scenes in Rogue Nation? Toss in the fights in the bathroom and on the cliff. With Dead Reckoning, the action is still good. Though this time, the plot saved those sequences from being underwhelming. The fight in the sandstorm is a good opener, but John Wick 4 had a similar opener and is way better. The chase scene in Rome is good, but it's overedited and lacked the danger the chase scene in Fallout had. The fight scenes apart from the one with Paris are lacking. The train scene also had editing issues save for the climb. If the plot is bad, these sequences will be disasterous. Nevertheless, this, John Wick 4, and Spider-Verse 2 are some of the rewatchable films of the year.

Regarding the aspect of time, I’m shocked to see this not mentioned in John wick 4 film perfection. It has exactly the same premise as dead reckoning with its action particularly the last act, where it seems that each action scene in the arc de triomphe, the apartment and staircase are divided into three acts that introduces more variables as the fight progresses, keeping the audience invested. As an example in the arc de triomphe, John starts in a car mowing down opponents in unique ways that are not even seen in the final two acts. Then, the scene switches to John being forced to abandon the car which now creates a brand new environment despite it being the same setpiece. The second act also introduces the boss (Chidi) in a minute long fight scene that combines its environment with the action like how John reloads as a bus passes by. The third act is now a combination of the previous two acts but ramped up. Now John is at even more at a disadvantage at an abundance of cars swarm his way (notice how before he was safer in his car but now he’s facing off against enemies in cars). Furthermore the boss is back and is fighting with his henchmen now instead of one to one. Now there are multiple enemies, John uses the cars as a weapon to kill multiple people in satisfying kills. Notice how the overabundance of variables keeps the action fresh, even more than dead reckoning in my opinion. This follows between all three mini-scenes of the last act, which is just sheer brilliance and is why I regard John wick 4 as the best action literally ever, and I’ve watched a lot of action movies like the raid and mi but this remains supreme

@illusion630
@illusion630 7 месяцев назад
@@scottbarkley496 Each to their own I guess. Where John wick falls in story it reigns supreme in combat and dead reckonings story was incomplete and like filmento said very convoluted so it doesn’t even have that leverage over John wick anymore. Dead reckoning is a victim of its franchises success and in an attempt to go bigger and better it falls completely flat in certain aspects like Ilsa’s death and having a concrete story that filmento will cover when the anatomy of a failure video comes out for it. I don’t see John wick 4 making these mistakes

Erica Sloan : You use a scalpel, I prefer a hammer. I liked DR but compared to Fallout, I prefer the hammer because that movie hammered! There is so many things I remember in MI Fallout but barely anything in DR, it just didn't keep me invested with the writing or utilizing the characters or even setting up better stakes by using a character that the series forgot as a meaningful death of an ''important'' character, like what if the fake bomb that kept Benji occupied released some slow acting poison on his character forcing Ethan to make some sketchy decisions between saving a team member over millions... Simon Pegg as an actor definitely has the gravitas to make us really feel bad if he got injured or died :p

Dead Reckoning was a really good movie but I agree I was a bit disappointed. I think it was because of covid disruptions which I think is the reason for the exposition. For me I think it was just because MI Fallout was one of the best movies I've ever seen (it flowed better than any movie ever) and for some reason this one felt a bit disjointed. I still give it a solid B+/A- though

I liked this one enough to see it twice! Sure, it’s a step down from Fallout, but that was inevitable. That’s like M:I perfection! My only two issues were Ethan’s criminal past and Gabriel yelling “EEETHAAAAANNN!!!” I understand he was frustrated, but they could’ve expressed that in a way that didn’t make him look like a poor man’s Jim Kirk. 🤣 The train fight scene was awesome, though! I’m not sure I like it more than the train battle in Broken Arrow, but it’s up there!
