It’s being used all over the NFL now…3-4 personnel to create a 4-3 Under. Shows 5 on the line, will drop either Phillips or Chubb into zone coverage creating 1 on 1’s at the line, 2 high shell coverage. Prevents any big plays and creates good QB pressure, the 3 tech should have a field day…Hopefully, everyone comes back healthy next year and stays that way!
@mroverdose14
@mroverdose14 Год назад
Yeah Wilkins in Ogbah at 3 tech. Love it. The real benefit to his defense isn't the change in the secondary but the Dline. Creating pressure while having 7 in coverage

Back in the day, we called it 5-2 in the huddle and I played defensive end. But I was standing up, lined up on the outside eye of the last guy on the LOS. It was what they now call a 3-4 and I was functionally playing outside linebacker to include defending the pass in the flats. Of course, most of the time I looked and if no one was going on a route to my side, I just rushed the passer because that was more fun.
@mroverdose14
@mroverdose14 Год назад
@@MannyOrejola I mean the point is to create hesitation in figuring out cause you can play anything out of it. It's about limiting the big playing and robbing quick hitting plays. Trying to make the offense attack middle of the clock plays and allow the Dline chance to win 1-v-1s. To beat it, you run teams into bringing an extra player down into the box.

Thanks for that explanation, Doug, and yes that 3-4 vs 4-3 thing can be confusing at times. Sometimes, one of the guys on the LOS just has their hand in the dirt and sometimes they don't and they call it one or the other. I remember back in the day they kept trying to get Olivadotti to switch back and forth and it seemed like after he left, they did change every time a new coordinator came in to coach...and of course, complaints about the personnel not fitting every time they switched were numerous.

Interesting points but he does so much more than what you covered here. Kurt Warner has a great video explaining how Fangio works out of his base using what Kurt calls a cover 6 shell with quarters on one side and half on the other. He's also very good at taking away the soft spot in the middle with robbers and cops. His defense needs a better middle LB than we currently have so that's one area we will be shopping for in the off season. I don't think we move on from Baker who's probably not the guy in the middle as he's better on the outside. The classic, Fangio-defense linebacker looks like your average 6’2” 240 pound guy who is well-rounded and has the instincts to play off of the run fits in a light box. I tend to think Channing Tindall might come to the forefront. The thing to keep in mind is that Vic Fangio himself might be the best ILB coach in the league. He had probably the last truly elite linebackers in the league in Navarro Bowman and Patrick Willis, but he’s constantly finding guys you’ve never heard of to be solid-to-good linebackers. Here's the link to Kurt's video which is definitely worth watching: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UT1NfAkym3U.html

I feel like this defense will definitely be a better scheme fit for Chubb, but besides our D line and Roberts, I have a feeling it’s gonna be a rough change for our secondary and most of our linebacking core. I did see someone say that they would like to see Holland step up and play some linebacker and I think that would be very interesting
@deathhimself1653
@deathhimself1653 Год назад
Linebackers are scheme dependent, like, extremely so. That's why you see so many go to new teams and suck or suddenly get good. Besides, most of ours were going to be cap casualties anyways. But Holland will fit this scheme well. The real worry to me, is X. Despite how most people view last year, in my opinion he was still at an elite level, just asked to do more than any corner in the NFL is ever asked to do. "Go lock down elite recievers one on one with no help" while fucking injured no less. But he is a press man corner. Not even a man corner. A *press man* corner. No corner is better than him at press coverage, bump and run, etc.. This scheme will not give him that. It will however, keep his eyes forward and looking at the qb to allow him to make plays. Can he? Sure. Will he? Who knows. I see his future as boom or bust. Either he returns to form and gets ten picks, or he flames out and we sell him for spare change. My hope is its the former, or that if its the latter, we sell him for a good price. But I honestly don't have any idea.
@patriciaalvareztostado8170
@patriciaalvareztostado8170 Год назад
I think the one that could do that is Brandon Jones, I think he isn't as good as deep safety he is good at bringing pressure to the QB, and in coverage I think we miss him a lot, and I want Holland to take a step forward, he could be a top 3 in the league, this season was good I was just expecting more, J Phillips, played better this year, steady grow is what I want.
@YourDaddyismydaddy

The linebackers and secondary were garbage last year. Any positives is better than having x one on one and get beat constantly. Should trade x and byron if they can get anything for them
@sevms22
@sevms22 Год назад
@@deathhimself1653 I think X has proved he’s more than adept in zone coverage, if he has a healthy season next year I do believe he’ll be lined up for a good one, definitely won’t be his best tho, and I really don’t know if the production will be worth the pay. I do think a re-shuffling of the secondary is in order. I really hate to say it but there’s definitely a move out there that sees us benefit from getting rid of X, and the earlier the better. The more I think about it the more I like the idea of Holland stepping up to interior LB, I think holland and Roberts would make a helluva duo. See Chubb move back to OLB with Baker (or Phillips, but Id rather see Phillips stick w the front 3) on the other side, and hopefully Tindall steps up this year to be a quality rotation piece with Riley in the middle. I actually wanna see Crossen start taking some reps at FS, the dude is a raw athlete, by far the fastest person in our secondary, and even tho he’s raw, especially at safety, with a little development he could be the perfect piece. If he does well there than Brandon Jones might prove to do really well at SS. I have no clue on what to do about Byron Jones, and unless we make some type of move, I would say the odds favor Kader ending up being the best corner on the team for the second season in a row.

@patriciaalvareztostado8170 Год назад
@@YourDaddyismydaddy I think they will keep X one more year, Byron is out, after the number he put this season, but we need a FA safety, Cb, a very good LB, and we draft more Lb, Rb, Ol, and maybe CB or S to develop him, hoping that we found someone like Needham or Kohou With Te I don't know if McDaniel would bring a FA Te his ofense need a better blocker than Gesicki but that he could get more offensively than Smytie

Like I said before, no good doing all this and the dolphins defense suck, no good doing this and the defense is bottom 3 in takeaways, sacks, pressure etc. I expect 77 sacks, 68 interceptions, #1 defense, #1 in all categories ( I take top 3) this upcoming season and most importantly I expect playoffs/winning a playoff game, AFC championship appearance. What are your thoughts for o-line: Andrew Wylie, RT, Chiefs and Left tackle Orlando Brown will be an unrestricted free agent, Wylie should hit the market, and after inking a one-year deal for $2.5 million, if they don't re-sign for chiefs, snatch them up. Left tackle replacements: Tennessee Titans have lost starting left tackle Taylor Lewan for the season because of a right knee injury has played just 20 games over the past three seasons and could be an off season cap casualty, and a good backup for Armstead, or Elgton Jenkins, OT/G, Green Bay Packers he too has injury problems. both would be good and cheep for next 2-3 years. Till we find permanent replacements. or sign free agent Jawaan Taylor, OT, Jacksonville Jaguars as successor to Armstead. Right tackle replacements: Andrew Wylie, RT, Chiefs or Jack Conklin, OT, Cleveland Browns, Conklin lacks durability and hasn't played a full season since 2019 or sign free agent Mike McGlinchey, OT, San Francisco 49ers and keep Brandon Shell as backup. And finally get rid of trade or release dead weight o-line players that are injury prone and ineffective.

On your "fancy" diagram lol its a little misleading. Where they align is a big part of the scheme. The outside guys are going to be wide, almost like a "wide 9". The 3 down lineman will shade to one side so that your technically overloading 1 side of the offensive line. This makes the oline have to kick out to get that wide guy. Why he does this is because it generally forces the side that isnt overloaded to move inside to guard your 3 down lineman...which often leads to double teams they cant handle. Davis, wilkins and sieler will thrive in this scheme because opposing offenses will be trying to deal with the threat of ogbah/phillips/chubb on the outside looking like they have a free lane to the qb all the time. If the offense chooses to kick out to guard them, it will leave a 2 on 1 of our d lineman on a single o lineman alot of the time. If they let the edge go or try and use a TE to chip block than thats why you shade the OlB outside the other tackle, they will have to pick 1 or the other or play max protect and either way the defense should have the advantage because the offense wont know whos coming and whos not and where the coverage will shift to behind it all

Well, it doesn’t help when you pay a guy a lot of money to get half a season out of him (Armstead)!! And even when he is playing he’s 80% (if you’re lucky) and injuries with two other positions on the o line throughout the year as well. Where do you expect a line to rank with constant instability.
@deathhimself1653
@deathhimself1653 Год назад
We had him healthy for basically 13 full games, lets not blame Armstead. I'm unhappy with our general free agent and front office strategy but he was the right guy. Armstead was a top three tackle in those games. Despite needing season ending surgery in week one and playing through it. Fucking legend, mad respect. The rest of the line, not so much. I felt we should have put more effort into it. Even without injuries, it was a bad unit. Which makes sense, the year prior we had the worst offensive line PFF ever graded, and by far the worst I've ever seen. We only upgraded two positions, Hunt was the only player who was worthy of even being a backup linemen on most teams, then guys get hurt and they were even worse. The problem is we're currently hurting for flexibility thanks to our strategy of F them picks. Cap situation leaves us little room to make cuts, draft situation is sparse, and we have other positions of need. (It's also just generally not a good O-line class from what I hear, though I've not dived into the prospects)
