Miata Steering Rack Install

In this episode I replace the manual steering rack in the Miata. In the process I find the reason the rack failed was because a torn tie rod boot had allowed water into the rack, and rusted it out.

Really glad to hear it! Where did you buy your rack from, and how much did you spend, if you don't mind me asking. Reman manual racks for these cars were tough to come by when I was shopping.

Nice VID! I'm assuming it's a similar process to do an NB. I have a steering wheel that doesn't return to center... Thinking I'll change lower ball joints first, but I'll check the corrosion on the steering rack and also try that tensioner a little bit if necessary.

Yes, also check your alignment. Might need more positive caster.

Couldnt you lock the steering wheel in place by turning it with the key out? Im about to do this when replacing my power rack with a depowered unit. And i read in another Comment that the tire rods are different from Powered to Depowered rack..? Does that mean the inner or the outer and which one should I buy going from power to Depowered on a 94

how did you get the bolt off on the drivers side towards the rear? my tools keep hitting the ac compressor

I had to unbolt the compressor to get to it. And had to find a good sized extension combo cause it was difficult to get back there.

I'm curious how those ricochet rack bushings are holding up? I'm about to install a new manual rack in my ITA Miata and I'm considering using them.

So far, they're still perfect. They're only a little less than a year old right now though. It will be interesting to see how they look in 5 years. That's when some non reinforced urethane products will start to show signs of breaking down. Especially if they've been exposed to motor oil.

At 3:30 is the power steering rack same as the manual steering rack or does the steering column piece not fit on a manual? I'm doing a swap and is not going in

As far as I know, the steering shafts are the same regardless of manual or power steering. You do need to take the bolt all the way out of the clamp on the steering shaft to get it to slide in. The tie rods will be different.
