Roy Keane garners respect and makes you pay attention that’s why he’s a good pundit , regardless of he’s digging someone out or praising someone you listen and he’s 99.999999 percent right... Wrighty, shearer the same you respect the opinions and with wrighty it’s the wholesome respect. He says a lot of positive and he’s got the passion. Shearers from my generation of footballers so I remember adoring the man so he gets my respect that way and he’s always talked the business and you know he’s talking sense. Each one has their own opinions. The worst one in my book is Souness. He’s past now and should have been moved on and same with Rio he’s always making the punditry about himself and it’s just not what you want to hear. It’s like he thinks people will forget about him so he’s constantly talking about the teams he played in and the players he played with or against.

My issue with cable TV punditry is that most of these guys get paid big money to give their view from the very unique point of actually have been a footballer but their mid game and post game analysis comes down to key words like "passion", "aggression", "tactical nous" etc. Which pretty much anyone who knows football or not can say. If a team plays attacking, possession-dominated football, they don't analyze, they just label it "tiki taka" and "park the bus" if they play the opposite. If there was actual in-depth analysis on strategy and tactics, so much of what you see on the pitch in terms of player behavior and team performance can properly be explained. Yes, we can bring up how difficult it would be to make this analysis in real time immediately after a game but isn't that why studios hire former pros and pay them ££££
@bgpilko

The best way I realised how football (and any elite sport) is about handling pressure was watching some of the stuff players do in training or in challenges. Watching England cricketers hitting a ball into dustbins 50yds away time sfter time after time or footballers hitting crossbars/scoring penalties/aceing shooting challenges was amazing...even doing simple stuff is difficult when the pressure is on! Pundits will always struggle to get some fans to understand the effect pressure has on players.

I seem to remember Alan Hansan having a Keano type reputation prior to social media. He wasn't only famous for the "win nothing with kids" line he was also generally inpolite enough to get a point across that registered with viewers. If the question is Who is the best pundit then the answer is the most honest. I'd say Righty in his earlier pundit career.
@bootch82

micah is so on the ball here. he doesn't say it outright but he mentions elements of how you have to find your role and it's a team effort. It's why their panel of Henry, Carragher, Micah and Kate works so well. each one has their strengths and they balance and complement each other to bring out the best of those strengths - it's not a debate, sometimes you have a devils advocate, but when someone is making a point but hasn't explained it well enough or has missed an angle, one of others will ask a question that is an assist for the first person to elaborate rather than disputing or interrupting to make the point themselves.

Micah has added a new dimension, it's made viewers look at the collective more than it ever was. He's made it more entertaining. Keane is a loose cannon, gives it an edge. Now that Lawrenson has gone, they are all pretty good, the women aren't. People say "they've played in stadiums, won cups etc" but then so have the mens U21s. I think it's important to have played at a high enough level where you have sources in the dressing room, understand the pressures & media scrutiny.

You can get statistics and analysis at the click of a button. I think that was Shearer's initial point - anyone can present you with facts and figures of how a game went. Personally, what I want to see is someone cutting through the stats and sharing the wisdom of their experience. Keano stands alone in his ability to cut through the BS, give a frank and honest appraisal of a player or team's efforts and accomplishments, and he is also very funny. He also knows himself and recognises his own limitations, which I also think is a mark of a great pundit. I find him the most measured, consistent, and 'on point' of all the pundits. Always want to hear his views on a game. He also calls out the BS of his fellow pundits which is needed. He's a born leader on and off the pitch.

Roy Keane isn't analytical?? And Alan Shearer supposedly is?? I think some people confuse analysis for talk about tactics and formations. Keane is very analytical when it comes to which defender is responsible for doing what in a given situation. And I think great managers do the same. How many times has Mourinho fallen out with players who could not do their assigned task in his system? People should not confuse Keane's intensity and digging individuals out with a lack of analysis or just being there to create drama. Keane's comments are focused on doing specific jobs, and that presumes analysis. Meanwhile there are plenty of commentators who talk tactics based on players' reputations, but then fail to call out the players when they are the reason that the tactics failed. Or they criticize players in general terms only. By contrast Keane is ruthlessly specific in his criticisms of players, great or small, who fail to execute the tactical plan.

Keane is box office but when you boil it down, it's essentially the frustrated fan digging out his own team when they don't win. It's basically Arsenal Fan TV in the last years of Wenger tbh. His answer is you are only losing because you don't want it hard enough and you have to become a thug and start lashing out to show ''passion'' if you are getting outplayed. There's NOTHING tactical about it at all. I don't particular rate Shearer for his insight but he does try to inform the viewing public something important that happened in the actual game that just took place and does sometimes make a good point. Most of it basic, i.e., praising a Dyche team for 2 banks of 4 and being tight defensively but something he does stumble upon a good bit of analysis over how a team tactically outmaneuvered the opposition.

I think Roy can be overly critical sometimes which is not great for the snowflake footballers we have currently however, I do believe that most of the time hes not wrong since he speaks from the heart and puts himself in the shoes of the players and what is expected of them as a professional. A good example is when Pogba didn't track back and the other pundits were defending him and Roy was like no I dont buy that "Its 5 yards!" You throw your life for that jersey. I think he comes from a time where football was looked at it that way where you play with your heart on your sleeve. There are still players like that today but lets be honest the younger generation probably more talented and fit lack just that extra club pride.

I hate the BBC but this, like much of MOTD, is brilliant, love it. A commentator segment would be good - the most important men in the game! I like most of the recent English pundits, but they're not allowed to call out the corruption and so-called 'positive racism' in player selection and pundit-hype that goes on all the time. The best footballing brain I've ever seen as a pundit, by far, is Glenn Hoddle. He's simply a footballing genius, and a perfect example of 'saying what the viewer can't see'. Of the younger ones, Jermaine Jenus has a good brain and is very likeable. As is Micah, and Gary Neville, Carragher and McManaman. Paul Scholes, while pretty much always being my favourite footballer of all time, is still a bit conformist, sort of giving others the benefit of the doubt and not speaking against much in the decline of Manchester Utd. It also annoys me a bit when a presenter asks him or someone else after a match "What went wrong?" and they go "Yeah, I dunno". Makes me think, well... don't give them their cheque just yet. Let's have them work for it a bit. Still, the most important thing is that the Scots don't do it. So long as we don't have to watch or hear ignorant, opinionated Scots talking rubbish about a league based in England and supported by Englishmen, we're always gonna be at least half way there.

You can understand football very well, without ever have had kicked a ball Humans are humans, and sports especially team sports are based on human beings, and if people understand humans, you can understand alot about football, without ever have kicked a ball Thats what professional football players do not understand Football is mainly in the head, as it needs intelligence to play it, and people who never played the game can see things in stuff that they should have no idea about. Pundits think all people who have never played the game know nothing, and thats not the case. In football in past you had to earn your dues, so you can see why footballers think this way, but that does not mean humans cannot work out alot about stuff, without ever being actively involved in something, that they are interested in. Football is a sport that requires intelligence, and that means people who cannot play the game can understand it, without playing it. Thats what pundits do not appreciate, and they think because they earned there dues in how football used to be, that all need to do this to understand it. No, plenty have a good idea about football without ever playing it Plus with respect to plenty of footballers, they are not that intelligent, they just had skills or physical attributes, that meant that they could play sports for a living. Most footballers really are not that smart, they had gifts that meant they could do something very well, but that does not mean they understand how they do it, or why they can do it. Thats what managers are for. If all pundits were that good, they would of been managers, and they are not. There is different intelligence abilities in humans, and that means football is like that too, meaning different players can analyse things in slightly different ways, and people like pundits who can see things for what they are on the pitch, and explain it to the public. I never listen to commentators, or pundits, if you can understand football, you just understand it, and you never needed to have ever kicked a football to understand it. Team sports are a fascinating profession that humans do, and so much of team sports is based on how humans are, and if you understand alot about humans, you should have a good understanding of how team sports work. Not playing the game, and not having the skills to play the game, means only that the public cannot understand technical details of football, and there is things about being a good footballer, that only good footballers know, if they indeed have the intelligence to understand why and how they can do what they can do. Lots of players have no idea how and why they are good at football, and simply do not the intelligence to understand it, in terms of logic. I never listen to pundits, or commentators, as like i said if you understand how football works, you just do. I could listen to really good managers explain football and understand it without having them explain it, as people like johann cruff was good, because he understood humans, and bill shankley was good, because he understood humans. If you can understand alot about humans, if you are interested in a team sport, you will simply understand alot about the sport without ever played it. Pundits, and former footballers always assume all the public has no idea, as these old school players went through a system where they earned there dues and they think because of this, that the public does not understand this system. They ignore its all about intelligence, and if you know humans, you can understand things about humans without ever doing what other humans do, and that means football as well. Football is best sport in world, because it needs intelligence to play, and that means all humans with there own level of intelligence can understand football at there level of intelligence. This is why football is best sport in world, and everyone has a view on it.

In terms of analysis, Carragher tops the list. He might be wrong on some calls but he justifies his positions .

Wenger is the best. He teaches and highlights things most people even avid fans don't see. Souness and Roy are controversial. Owen is the worst.

Alan Shearer, Micah, Wright, Keane, Scholes, Hargreaves, Owen, and Lineker are all great. they all bring different sides/personalities to the game

Ex players are very deluded about their analytical abilities. Nobody really rates their insight. People will stay turned for Keane tearing strips off someone but beyond that people get their analysis from the athletic or podcasts now. These pundits have been complacent for years and lost their credibility. Nobody cares what Shearer thinks now.
