This is the scene that foreshadows Tessio's betrayal. Notice Tessio's statement that with the Corleone's gone "he and Clemenza will come under Barzini's thumb sooner or later." It is clear that Tessio sees Barzini's takeover as inevitable. Yet, Clemenza responds to that notion with disgust and states that he "hates that goddamn Barzini." I've watched this movie countless times in the last 20+ years and I just noticed this subtlety only recently.

Yeah I think different management tactics like this really gave them their own personality. They could have easily made Michael a copy cat to his father but they’re incredibly different. What I love though is that even though Vito noticed his cold persona in this scene, he stuck by his son and gave him full control. Just such a testament to Vito’s loyalty to his family.
@enshk79

I love them both. I loved seeing al pacino’s character being the colder, darker one. He was able to identify Carlo and exact revenge. The one disadvantage to Vito’s style was Carlo was able to fly under the radar. Neither father or son’s styles were better or worse; just different. Loved the dynamic so much. And I loved the respect they both had for each other. I just love seeing that kind of loyalty in family.

To be fair, I understand why Michael wasn’t as emotionally connected to everyone as his father. Barzini and the other families showed Michael that times were changing and that respect alone doesn’t guarantee safety or loyalty at all. His father had been a respectable man his whole life and look what they did to his family. After losing his wife and older brother he realized that ruthlessness was the only way to maintain power in his current time. The only part where Michael made critical mistakes was specifically with his own family (being distant and driving them away, killing Fredo instead of forgiving him, etc). The way he treated his family was his ultimate downfall, not the way he treated everyone else

He was worried because at that time The Corleones lost alot of power. They didn't take Michael seriously because there was a time in the not too distant past he had no interest in the business. What I loved is that Don Corleone acknowledged that Michael "headed" The Family and not him. Also Michael bought his College Experience in where it was more Corporate than "Casual". Michael was also very smart "allowing" Carlo to be part of The "Meetings". He wanted Carlo to be "comfortable" and "reassured" and not to think he was being blamed for indirectly causing Sonny's Death.
