We are thrilled to bring you this 2023 NBA Finals preview with Michael Porter Jr. and Duncan Robinson. First up, JJ Redick and Tommy Alter break down The 2023 NBA Finals match-up between The Miami Heat and The Denver Nuggets. Then Duncan joins us to talk about his wild NBA season and the ups and downs and overcoming adversity, he talks about the series between The Heat and The Boston Celtics and the mental resolve of his team after losing Game 6 and almost blowing a 3-0 lead, why Kevin Love changed this Heat team, he talks about how they went about winning Game 7 and the crazy reason Duncan decided to taunt the Boston crowd, and finally he describes what it's been like playing with this version of Jimmy Butler. Then Michael Porter Jr. hops on to talk about his comeback from his horrible back injury and the rehab process, why Jamal Murray is better these playoffs than he was in the Bubble, the mental resolve of this Nuggets team against The Timberwolves, Kevin Durant and Devin Booker and The Phoenix Suns and LeBron James and The Los Angeles Lakers, how the team has handled the extended rest, what it's like playing with Nikola Jokic and how he's handled all The MVP First Take noise, how Nikola is making him a smarter player and much more. Enjoy the Finals!

Both of these guys hugely stepped up in the playoffs. MPJ and his countless surgeries on his back, Duncan having a rough stretch had people questioning if he even belonged in the league. There's a world out there where neither of these guys even make the NBA so let's be thankful we're in the world where these two dudes get to ball out on great teams in the playoffs. MPJ having stretches where he looks like an all defensive guy with that crazy length and million dollar smile, he's really matured over the years. Duncan slashing when I remember his last time on the pod he said if his feet ever entered the three point line Spo would scream at him and bench him. Then Butler would stick up for him like a good leader and tell Spo to let him ball. Both teams are something special, we are witnessing greatness.

MPJs growth on the defensive end. and the offensive end. as a player and a person these last few seasons has been amazing. this dude used to be an unaware traffic cone who never passed and butted heads with the coaching staff about his touches and playing time. He's always been a 6'10" sniper so denver still gave him the max, now he's more than holding his own in the playoffs and dishing out assists when the defense closes on him!! which is allowing malone to keep him on the floor in high leverage situations. if he can keep it up vs the heat and we win a chip. this dude will be an all time comeback/player growth story especially with all the back surgeries and stuff. he has a similar game to klay thompson..maybe not as good as a ball handler/passer as klay but he can get there and play the same role klay played for the warriors dynasty with the nuggets upcoming dynasty. I heard a journalist talking about mpj on a podcast saying he seems like he's faking his all-in, team first, unselfish mentality and it wont be long until we hear a trade request coming from him. I highly doubt that. MPJ has always been a good dude. maybe a bit immature as a young-un but you can see that he was raised right and its showing as he matures. I also think if we go all the way with him making the offensive sacrifices he has malone will reward him with a bigger and bigger role as the years go on. in past years it might've been a bad idea to embed him in the offense as much cause the nuggets never knew if he would go down with another back injury all of the sudden and his attitude just hadnt been there. Malone rewards good team players with good attitudes, hes stayed healthy recently, good things come to those who wait and mpj will absolutely get his.

I’d like to see JJ revisit his ‘parity distorts reality’ take. I largely agreed with his stance, but Mia and even Lakers run throws a wrench into that thinking
@ryanmahon2956
@ryanmahon2956 Год назад
Does it? I feel like a 7th and 8th seed shouldn't be in conference finals but they were and that was because of parity. Made it all hard to predict
@nicholasleemarks
@nicholasleemarks Год назад
@@ryanmahon2956 yea, the formula of being a 50+ win team with a top 10 defense and offense (I might be slightly off on the formula) would have suggested Mil, Bos, or Den as the only real contenders. And now Mia might eliminate all 3 en route to a chip, which is insane. But if Denver wins, then I guess you could argue that that formula still holds
@zayn2780
@zayn2780 Год назад
@@nicholasleemarks you can justify the runs a little, I mean LA is a completely different team after the deadline (might've had a 50+win season had they had the same players at the beginning of the season), Miami is a little more difficult to justify, however I distinctly remember towards the end of the season them being top 5 in defense or something like that, offense on the other hand can delegated to different reasons, maybe they're just coasting until playoffs start, and there are also the intangibles, them being the absolute heart Miami has or the fact that not too long ago they were in the ecf losing in game 7, but my opinion is that Lakers and Miami aren't the typical 8th seed, I mean we didn't look at Toronto the same way we look at Miami or LA despite all finishing within 1 win of each other. Edit: Miami's conceded ppg per game in the regular season is 109.8, which is second place in east in points per game allowed, their offense is 109.5 (bottom of the league), so there's the problem, offense, but in playoffs jimmy, caleb, gabe catch fire, so it tips the scale back to the winning formula, top offense and defense.
@ampolcyn1
@ampolcyn1 Год назад
@@nicholasleemarksDenver had a 15th ranked defense so it would still be historic if Denver wins
@nicholasleemarks
@nicholasleemarks Год назад
@@ampolcyn1 Then my memory of the ‘formula’ is a little off. JJ had a ‘parity distorts reality’ video a couple months ago and the premise was that, based on historical trends, we should expect Mil Bos or Den to win this year (I think there was only like 1 outlier in the last 25 years-ish according to this formula) (It might have been that if the team is not top 10 in both offense and defense, then they have at least a top 5 offense or defense)

I think people are more so surprised the heat made the finals because of how bad and up and down they played in the regular season along with teams getting better in the east. Most teams can’t just turn it on when the playoffs come around, that’s rare.
