Schenker is so melodic and has incredible depth in his work. He has always set the bar so high for himself and others that are inspired by him. He leaves a lot of the fretboard masturbators in the dust.
ZeMPzo I feel the same way but I just keep plugging away at it. Any way my wife and kids and neighborhood likes my playing. I guess it's good enough. Thanks Michael for the jumpstart!!!!
at 60 yrs old, Micheals playing has brought that feeling since I first heard him in the 70's. I did'nt quit but, I am always still in awe watching him even things I've seen and heard 1000 times, He never gets old and always delivers that hair on your arms standing up especially when he's "lost" in total shred. It is why he's one of the Metal Gods if you will. long live Mr Schenker!!
There are so many fantastic guitarists on display here on RU-vid, and some are virtuosos. But I always come back to listen to Schenker play when I want a truly jaw dropping melodic solo. IMO no other Guitarist in history can make a guitar sing like he can.
AWESOME!!! Priceless video!! I love M and UFO. I'm 46 and teach guitar at a store with a lot of other younger teachers and they really have no appreciation for Michael Schenker. They just don't get it. He was way ahead of the curve in his hey day, but beyond that he's just so lyrical and gifted. He can make you cry and then slam you to the pavement all in one song. God bless him he's one of the all time greats. ROCK ON!!!!
Absolutely. I hate the timing that just when he was coming into his own as an iconic player, ...heeeer's Eddie! Kinda stole the thunder. If you were 46 15 yrs ago, you are a 62 model. 2 yrs older than me. Right in line with my Schenker and UFO loving pals. Some of whom are no longer with us.
@@MegaByrds Wow I didn’t expect to get a response 15 years later! Actually I’m a 61 model who’ll soon be be 62! And your right, all us older guys are the ones who love this era of playing and sadly some of us are not here anymore. I ran into a guy recently at a restaurant who was wearing a UFO t-shirt and immediately sparked up a conversation with him by saying, “Hey, UFO is my favorite band”. Good stuff! They certainly deserved more recognition but somehow I think it would have taken away from their appeal. Great, great band! Hang in there my brother and keep on rockin and pickin.
I have seen alot of talented guitarists in concert such as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Van Halen, Eric Johnson etc and finally saw Michael Schenker 5 days ago. My life feels complete. What a show!!
Yup. Alot of clowns argue endlessly that Yngwie Malmsteen is the best at riffs, licks, speed, vibrato, technique, melody, composition etc. That`s simply not true. Schenker is one of the best at melody and composing solos that vary in tempo to fit the song and at making the guitar sing. YM can`t match that inate born with ability to make a guitar emote and sing. UFO should be in the rock n roll hall of fame
I wish the Schenker brothers did more together. Rudy is my favorite rhythm player and Michael is one of my favorite shredders. These dudes are too cool.
He’s one of greatest guitars ever to grace this earth. His sense of melody, rhythm, timing and feel is unbelievable! He is one of the reasons I was inspired to learn guitar and to listen to music….
KILLER tone! in his hands. Just one of the all-time greatest metal/rock guitarist. His influence on what would become THE archetype shredder tone/phrasing is second to none.
Loved this video and seeing some of the old Schenker interviews. I've been a fan since the late 70's - back when I was knee high to a grasshopper and started playing guitar.
Thanks Axeflyer for posting all your excellent Video's of MSG and UFO all focusing on the brilliant Michael Schenker, we know where your heart is, you are one of us " the few, the proud and the loyal" Schenker Fanatics. Keep the vids rollin for us man, there the best.
YEAH MAN! The king himself! This man and Gary Moore were the biggest influences on me as a player. And if you look at the date folks, 1980 - really even before the term shred was around. Michael Schenker is just amazing!! - Dannyjoe
I agree, why isn't Michael Schenker in the rock & roll hall of fame (living legend), why aren't the Scorpions and UFO in the rock & roll hall of fame, these are the guys that pioneered the way for hard rockers and metal since the 1970's. Vegas rocks gave michael the legendary guitarist of the year, Doug Alrich was freakin honored to award it to him, Marshall also gave Michael an award and they were all overdue, thank god someone notice.
and hes really underated too!ive seen many polls about whos the best rock guitarest ,and he doesnt even place in the top 50!personally , i dont think theres anyone better.
Well said and of course Pure talent and hard rock soul, lets face it Michael is the Maestro, Mr. Virtuoso and no one comes close, he's a fucking Genius. Can't wait til he comes back around, got spoiled last year 2012, saw Michael twice and the Scorpions in between, thought i was in hard rock heaven. ( my freaking heroes ).
Cheers for the vid - brought it all back that did! I'm pretty sure that from 3:00 on is from a guitar instructional video that was done in the 80's. I remember it being previewed on the Old Grey Whistle Test - of which I've got on tape somewhere. Brilliant stuff!
Big secret to his clear cutting tone is real simple gear. Stock Gibson (stock pickups-not high output), a wah, then straight into a 50w Marshall. Delay on occasion.
He bends the strings 1 from top goes over the second & places the strings like a left hand guitar ,he does the same at begining of Lost Horizon live version not this one but the same chime! GENIUS
seen him back in the 80's at the sun dome, was soooo excited to see him cuss he's one of my favorites, and they had him turned down so low you could hardley hear him, i was FRICK'N PISS'D !!!!!, but it was a good show.
@dwood16 He has always composed his own music & I've heard all his music released & unreleased & he is more than just a fast run inventor! He has a very large history of music under his belt that alot more only dream of achieve! maybe 'cause is not your favorite guitarist! He is my favorite & the best for me but we all got our own favorites!
@btflash55 Your input is much appreciated,I don't even bother to read those polls anymore & you know what really gets to me? is that some people even make videos of top 10 or best guitarists & he is never mentioned, probably cos they never heard of him but I like all the MSG stuff that is now on youtube, back in 2006 ,they hardly had anything back then,so that is very comforting to see, Cheers mate!
Axe I'm sure you can tell me the real story about What happened to this Historical guitar! It belongs in the Rock Icon Archives somewhere!! I Just scored the Dean Sckenk Retro model so now I've got V mania. I just gotta get used to that big ass flyswatter headstock! Gibson were GOOBERS not to recognize Michael with a signature series. I for one would have payed some G's to own one! Thanks again for all you do!
It's called Lost Horizon from his debut MSG album,1980. I have posted about 9 live & audio-track versions, this is 1 of them: MICHAEL SCHENKER [ LOST HORIZON ] [I] LIVE 1984.
i saw one poll that had the guitarest from red hot chili peppers, john frusciante in the top five all -time!i stopped reading the polls after that!just an aside, i met michael schenker in 1995 in new york at the limelight and he was a very nice, quiet ,down to earth guy.
I have posted different versions mostly audio-tracks of this song, but this is the only live video of it but different singer, thnx 4 watching! MICHAEL SCHENKER [ SAVE YOURSELF ] LIVE.'97.
I share the same feeling, thnx for your comment,I don't even bother to check the polls anymore,it pisses me off when I see who's names are on as the best guitarists!
OMG Schenker is the Maestro, Mr. Virtuoso himself. Nobody comes close, SCHENKER is chaneled in. Michael said it " there it went and here i am". Badass FTR.
