It's much more fun for the audience when singers of this caliber recognize and embrace the original intention of this music: it was a gladiatorial competition engineered to engage and transport.

First of all, the sound on the recording doesn’t do justice to either voice-there are certainly examples of these singers which shows off their voices much better than here. Second, in sooooo many of these recordings, male or female, commenters are often OBSSESSED with what kind of voice he is or she is. What’s with that? And comparing opera voices with pop voices. I don’t get that either. It’s comparing apples and oranges, don’t you think?

C. Saint-Saëns Good point. I’ve sung (choir) and played classical music my entire life and have recently been studying classical solo singing, so I find people’s different takes on who has what voice equally fascinating and infuriating. With all the yammering that they do, I wonder if some of the commenters actually know what it feels like physically to sing an aria, for example. Anyway, that’s all I know. 🙂

Well, if people enjoy half-falsetto, nasal tenor voices with caprino and no squillo, it's up to them. These singers would be booed off stage 100 years ago, when people knew the sound of a free, declamatory voice.

@@celibidache1000 Bless your heart, you have no idea how voices sounded 100 years ago. There are recordings, but recordings in 1920 certainly do not show the true sound of voices like today's recordings do.

When Rocky was in high school, our voice teacher Renata told him to lay on the floor and lift his father's bowling ball straight up over his head - 10 times with each arm - and then increase the reps His chest went from 36 to 46 over a number of years -- amazing support and agility. (I may be slightly off on the numbers, but I guarantee they are close -- this a story I was told about 45 years ago...lolol) 😎😎😎

Barone Vitellio Scarpia is exactly right. I see Spyres as a kind of goofy guy with a weird voice he likes to play around with. Nothing very serious artistically going on with him. (It’s always nice to see Larry Brownlee, who I sang with several times at the very start of his career. Did well for himself, didn’t he?)

Mention Corelli in the post with Rossinian singing is means that once understand nothing in opera singing, performing styles and opera art itself, but know only "brand" opera voices. If you like wright about Corelli who never sung Verdi's Otello in the posts with Verdi's Otello, not Rossini's as in this case. In the time of Rossini Corelli was meant as a shouting monster by the way. So, thinking first, read something about the histoty of opera and evolution of performing technique and only then post your comments. Gosh, what a pity...
