That they chose to sing John Prine tells me all I need to know about these three talented singers. It’s such an honour to be able to look back on this time . Boy the music was special.
I heard this cover of Hello in There the day we lost John. After seeing Brandi Carlisle sing it on the late show, I went onto RU-vid to look for other covers of this song. This was the first one I found.
Ich knie nieder vor meinen 3(!) Helden Natalie, Michael und nicht zu vergessen Billy Bragg an der Gitarre. Unvergegessen , wäre gerne dabei gewesen. Ihr seit unglaublich gut.
As I grow older, this song has so much meaning. I was young, in my twenties, around the same age as them, when this song was recorded. What a beautiful performance.
This song is a beautiful variation on the question posed in Eleanor Rigby "All the lonely people where do they all come from?" When people ask me what I think I just want to play this song for them. It's amazing how many people don't know this song. There will never be another John Prine
It’s reality, it’s life, it’s genuine. My father spent four years in Vietnam. Liberals spit on him upon arrival and The government turned their back on him. This song helps a bit.
Wow, I'm stunned, thought I've heard & seen everything REM-related, but then I find this pure gem. Just look at this, no light shows,, minimal instruments, just a couple of people using their magnificent voices! WOW!
One of my favorite JP songs. I'm particularly fond of his live performance from Sessions at West 54th Street. John had such a unique voice. So do Natalie and Michael. Their cover touched me
for me the two finest voices in music ..and i had the privilege to hear them both in Glasgow 1990 but didn't know the enormity of what i was watching. i thought every singer would be that good in the future . they weren't
Damn. First time hearing this. I was thinking "Buck sounds like Billy Bragg" but, whoa, it is Billy Bragg! I always forget Bragg was part of the Athens-ish scene for maybe two years about this time.
This song was written by the great John Prine. It captures the perfect energy between the two good friends. Natalie is such a little doll in the video. It make me feel young again. Thanks for sharing it with all of us. The world is a better place with music like this video.
I love- so much- that I can always find, no matter what- a video of Michael Stipe I've never seen before, doing a song I love, whether I've heard it before or not. And FTR, Natalie sounds beautiful as always!
GEM> Beautifully done. Stipes voice is full of Americna boy energy and really well placed here. His voice is so clear and high for this style and evokes corn fields and trees of the USA. Merchant sounds Celtic and emotional with her haunting head tones , swaying pitch and occasionally choked up flow. The contrast here is really special between Bragg's AMAZING composition/words and these two performers and one time lovers. Definitely a moving performance of this very important song. And the fact this rendering was given in the Czech Republic AFTER the USSR finally released it's grip is very interesting.
Of couse, we all know this is the greatest sad song ever written. Hands down. Miss you JP. These guys do another version of this (on youtube-outdoor show) that I think maybe's even better.
I saw REM ( Michael Stipe) perform in the 80’s in Charlotte NC at the ‘Milestone Club’ as they were just starting out. I still love their music. Awesome performance here with Natalie Merchant in Czech Republic. Thanks for posting this iconic song coined by the late great John Prine 💚💯%
Always loved how these two performed this song. If any of you haven't heard it, there are two other Stipe/Merchant duets called Photograph and a cover of To Sir With Love that are fantastic. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_hrTIo_GLsM.html
incredible - I knew the one where there were singing this open air - and they seem to have some problems with each other - but these videos with michael are very warm and intime
Zdenek, jak se mas? I am so happy to see this footage. I saw these amazing performers also in 1990 but then somewhere in Praque. Maybe you can tell me where in Prague it was? Is there anyone who has footage of that gig in Praue perhaps. I did record only the sound on a mini taperecorder. It was a wonderful atmosphere, I spent many weeks in Prague in 1989 and 1990. Dekuju vam!
