Hello Michael, This is great example of how details can add immeasurable impact. The miming of getting the invisible coin to the fingertips before hanging it on the skyhook. Seeing the skyhook and only then hanging the coin on it...this takes time, thoughtfulness and the patience of an actor. Watching this reminds of watching Fred Kaps when he performed the smoking the thumb. He mimes lighting a match and carefully holds the invisible match so it doesn’t go out. It gives credence to the axiom, “...genius is an infinite capacity for taking pains”. Thank you

Thank you Michael - I now prepare my audience with your explanation of intellectual versus emotional magic. (and I give you credit for the information) This sets the tone for those spectators who insist on wanting to know how the trick is done rather then enjoying the "magical" experience and being young again.

What a beautiful conversation! I say it again and again I could listen to Michael talk all day. I love this version of triumph and the presentation is gorgeous. I first seen it on Michaels dvd and my mouth hit the floor with the kicker ending. Michael has taught me a lot of important things so much so I could write a book just on his advice. From care and love and respect to our audience to love and care and respect for your performance even the manner in which you carry and present yourself and handle your magic...I can go on for days.. I've been a fan for a few years and I have been influenced by your card handling more than anyone else. I love this trick and I learned it from your DVD, and I love doing this as well as the Lie Detector and other tricks I've seen from your other DVDs. Since you are not performing as much these days, I'd love to see you do more of these "old" tricks, whether its from Marlo, Vernon or the Royal Road, as it helps those of us who are not as good at learning from books to see how these tricks are supposed to look.
Yes I love all of Michaels dvds. I also agree about showing the older material so we know how routines should look like. I talk about his dvds every chance I get. Another inciteful message. Thank you. It's so funny this morning at 5:30 when I woke up I started working on Vernon's cup and ball routine like I have for the last several weeks. It was much later in the day when I watched this video where you mentioned performing the cups and balls. I too am struggling for a anchor in terms of presentation. I went right back to the source and got out my copy of The Dai Vernon book of magic and started looking at the various stages of routine. I also took the time to listen to Tony Bennet singing "I left my heart in San Francisco". Leave it to Mr. Vincent to compare magic and the American songbook. Brilliant. Kindest regards.
Penn and Tellers show where they went around the world checking out magicians has a good piece on the cups and balls. With Teller telling the tail of a street magician doing them on him. Being polite he went along with it but was actually fooled at the end because the magician knowing who he was, changed it.

Wow this is one of the first tricks i learned. But you do it so much smoother and deeper. ^^ I mostly present it as one of my first tricks a little bit sloppy in the shuffling and then after all the chaos a snap in the end and the beauty when you show the cards are back in order. Gets very good reactions but i missed the part with the many cuts. Have to say it looks so much better your way. ;) Ah just love your style so elegant so unique. Well done.
I had this issue seeing performing tricks as lying, a fragile illusion that was weak if broken. I thought of slights as the lyrics to a song, something that could be analyzed as fact or fiction. Eventually I realized it's more like the backing track. Techniques being the chords and notes that you combine to create the magic. I never judge a great instrumental on whether it's true or false, only on how it leaves me feeling.
How did you learn magic? I mean I get you began learning at age 14, but what route did u take to learn new tricks, the theory behind magic, the ppl who explore magic, etc?

I dont consider myself to be a magician either, even though i have been doing this for over 30 years and have had some good pay days. Its not my full time employment so by definition cannot call myself a magician. Most of the people i have worked with and entertained over the years think i am though, which i think is funny. My style all depends on the audience. Mostly feeling my way along and responding to what they say. I always ask them to put their hands up if they have never seen a magician, then put mine up too. Alan Alan was the only one i have seen, and that was in his magic shop. After i kept going back he asked me my name, and when i told him, he said never change it to a stage name as he felt it was good enough. When he found out i was heavily into Harry Loraye at the time, we went to his place and showed his collection of books and videos of his. I had never seen such a collection before, it was amazing. He was a very generous man. He encorages you with making a big deal of it, a really nice guy. Now, wheres my copy of Royal Road...Take care Mike. 👍

Richard Fairhurst I personally feel it is. Some of own creations have gone through this process and never saw the light of day. Taking what has been created by other and adding my own creative touch gave me something totally different. It’s all creative, I am committed to the process with zero attachment to the outcome. I love being surprised by own expression. That’s my muse speaking 👍🏽
Hello Michael, I've been enjoying your recent posts and rewatching/listening to older ones. One of the common themes you speak about is authentic self-expression. Would you consider defining this in a future upload? How do you define it? Here is what the take-away is for me regarding authentic self-expression. *-It is by nature autobiographical and revelatory about oneself. *-It is at times narrative in nature. *-It has the potential to humanize (and potentially make vulnerable) the magician and open up communication between the performer and his audience. *-It is devoid of stock jokes and lines although it can be humorous in nature. *-It is performer-specific and requires, by its' nature self-examination. 🤓This is great. Interpretation is really an important component of life and I like the several ways that you put this. Luther Vandross was indeed a master interpreter in music and likewise Stevie Wonder, and Sinatra, by their own songwriters. Likewise yourself and lecture when it comes to magic and great choices of those interpretations as well. I love your work. Not really churchy, but I always get the proper material and “interpretations” out of it. Thanks for that! 🤘🏽🎻💯
The only thing that I have to disagree with you about is that laymen don't believe in magic. Ha Ha! After seeing you perform over & over again I have to wholeheartedly say that statement is not true because this laywoman totally believes that MAGIC is real Mr. Vincent :-)! Tipsy T is so cool & Triumph too. I am going to invent some new words for how awesome your magic is because Awesome is now inadequate & any other words that I can think of (marvelous), (spectacular), (amazing)! Thanks always for the magic that is REAL at least in my mind & heart.
