It's called the black river because in croswell where the pioneer sugar plant is located, the workers would dump the material from the sugar beets into the river and the minerals would change the water color black
@randomness_with_brittany
@randomness_with_brittany 2 года назад
That makes no sense you can find places down river from Croswell that the water is so super clear...... the problem is water flow. The black river runs much slower so that the sediment doesn't get pushed down as fast as in comparison to the Saint Clair river. Where the water is constantly moving like in Bairds Hills its so clear (as long as its not a down pour and pushing dirt into the water constantly) and that is down from Croswell
@kimfleury
@kimfleury 2 года назад
There used to be a certain species of pine tree that grew in the wetlands at the source of Black River. We're talking from 1600s recorded exploration to the 1800s. The tannins from the pines turned the river as black as tea, according to the journals of exploration. Over time, as industry developed, people used the rivers as a sewer for human and industrial waste. It got so stinky that residents of Port Huron couldn't open their windows in summer. So the city dug a canal, seen at about 7:59 in this video, to draw water from Lake Huron into Black River. The incoming flow of fresh water flushed the little river, solving the stink problem. Before clean water laws, the sugar beet waste was dumped into Black River, but it wasn't enough to change the color of the water. That practice was ended in the 1970s. If you follow Black River all the way to its source on a satellite map, you won't see the stand of wetland pine trees. I don't know why they disappeared, but since they're gone, the river isn't as black as tea any more.
@ShawnClarady
@ShawnClarady 2 года назад
It has been called Black River LONG before the sugar plant opened in 1902. It has been called the black river since the 1700s and probably longer. The local Indians called it The Black River or some variation of that.

Port Huron, like any other city, is what you make it. I was born & raised here, loved the water, beaches, ships, etc. I was gone for 42 years with the military & government. I came home almost every summer to camp & enjoy the area. I finally was able to return. Yes, much has changed, people have changed but the natural beauty of the river & lake is still the same. Your comment about many months of winter… wrong. I was stationed in true winter areas, this is not one of those areas. Come back in warmer months & see the beauty!

Chris, the original Saint Clair River Tunnel was the first International submarine tunnel in the World. The original tunnel completed in 1891 was replaced by a new, much larger tunnel, about 500 feet North of the original in 1997. The original tunnel was abandoned at that time. The new tunnel can accommodate the largest rail cars currently in use. The portals of both tunnels can be viewed from East of 16th street in Port Huron or in Sarina, but I don’t remember the street names there. Gary

We had all the stores downtown in 1990. But people wanted a mall because they thought it was cool. I worked in one of the downtown stores and didn't want the mall. They had to drain wetlands to build it. I moved up with the store when it went to the mall and I hated every minute of the 7 years I worked up there. It's always people just following Dad's that are going to fall out of favor into decay and rot.

I lived here when I was younger and loved it - I called it home despite living in many other places. If you were from Port Huron, you had a heavy Michigan accent, had a lot Canadian coins, went to Detroit for big city things, or Toronto for bigger city things. You ate Detroit style pizza before it was cool. The beaches are smaller, and rockier than on the Lake Michigan, but the water quality is just as good. You can take a ferry to cross the border into Canada south of PH. That mall used to be cool, but it sucked the life out of downtown as the retail stores fled to the Ft. Gratiot. Many people did not go to college or grad school there, but have decent, blue-collar jobs. Most are so friendly and lack pretention. When I was in high school, I moved across the state to Kalamazoo on the state's West Side, which is culturally much different than the East Side which is more dominated by the automotive industry, unions and are less Dutch. Port Huron was by far the least pretentious, fun little city I've lived in - but don't expect to be culturally enriched.

Used to visit Port Huron while working on the construction of the CN St Clair River Tunnel. Used to enjoy have a beer in the L shaped shack bar under the bridges, it had an L shaped pool table well. Sometimes have meals in the Port Huron hotel, but there was a non-chain chicken restaurant on the road heading south right-hand side that did great meals. I made friends with a Port Huron couple that would visit Sarnia, to play ice hockey. So were invited over to watch em play in PH. He was also the Pipe Major of the Michigan Police Pipe Band, now that was something else to watch and admire. His wife worked in immigration on the bridge and got me issued with a card that got me through quicker. I had a great 18 months there and enjoyed both towns and the people, watched ice hockey, sailed on the lake and attended farm shows, took in all that I could in the off time I had. The Lake Shore areas are not likely to diminish in population much and that's reflected in the home prices. My sister -in-law just purchased a home in Marine City, right on the river. @kimfleury
@kimfleury 2 года назад
@@ChrisHarden the name of the sailboat race is a point of contention in Port Huron. Until 2010 or 2011 we called it the Port Huron to Mackinac Race. Charities sold t-shirts with that name. Then the Bayview Yacht Club of Detroit filed the branding to claim it and stop Port Huronites from profiting off merchandise or raising funds for local charities. I get that the race originated with the members of the Bayview Yacht Club, after a couple of its members won an Atlantic sailboat race, to the shock and surprise of the East Coasters who thought Michigan was all Midwest cornfields. I get that. But the way they played dirty, running roughshod over us locals, demanding gouging licensing fees even for charities, really left a sour taste over the event. Ergo, it's the Port Huron to Mackinac Race. I've got my old collection of race tshirts going back to the 1980s until 2009, and won't put a nickel in BYC's coffers.

There has been talk of changing the highschool mascot for as long as I can remember. But a couple of the other schools were like that too Michigamme elementary is the Chiefs, Chippewa was the Braves (where Menards is now, I was the last graduating class in 2010. Blew all their money on a Christian metal band for graduation🤣🤣) and PHHS are the Big Reds. I honestly wouldn't mind a name change. Also with the hospital (as someone who works there) probably 50-60% of staff are Canadians

River City...just like the musical, a city sleeping away 😊on the banks of a River. A fairly clean & peaceful place slumbering away in its own smugness. PH has done little to capitalize on tourists or the money generated by them. The City does not publize, grow or expand the natural or historical ties the city does have. The place is literally an undiscovered gem of opportunity if the City Fathers don't buck you in your efforts.

One little known concern of the city council in Port Huron has been the number of rental units in the city. Owner occupied homes are under 50% and have been for some years. I didn't follow up on the details and I don't know what the city did to address this concern. Interesting fact that may be related to the drug problem. Also, Lakeport State Park is just a few miles north of town and adds to the desirability of the area

You should do videos on the Canadian areas just across the border. You are so close, so why not? It would be interesting to compare them to their U.S. counterparts. Maybe go to Windsor, Ontario first. It's just across the bridge from Detroit.

I want to see Sarnia, Ontario. My GGF was born there, but immigrated (legally) to Port Huron, where he and his brothers joined the U.S. Navy during WWII (one was killed during the war). I was told that there is a colony of ppl in Sarnia who immigrated from England, which is where my ppl are originally from.

Immigration,yes. Many railroads met in PH. They funneled many immigrants to the upper Midwest & great plains. Immigrants immigrated through Canada ((& the US). They 😮took passenger steamers through tthe Lakes to PH. From there the RR fed to N&S Dakota,Wisconsin, Minnesota & the upper West. Coming through Canada & by steamer was quicker than following the lower route through the States around the bottom of the Lakes. Today it is still quicker to visit E Canada & New England states through Canada than go through the US.

As soon as they lay down new road it starts to fall apart. That's why we're constantly dealing with road construction. It's a pain dealing with detours and slow downs and stopped traffic, but you think when it's done it'll be worth it. The first year is great. The second year you memorize the potholes. The third year you see cracks and more potholes. The fourth year you're rattling along just waiting to have to deal with another year of detours and slow traffic and stopped traffic. Rinse repeat ad nauseum.

The video footage is from a Sunday morning in March. People are likely at a place of worship, sleeping in, or having brunch. In addition it was likely a brisk March morning in Michigan. Most lacking outdoor enthusiasm don't come out until later in the spring when the temps are better...

Nice job. Fort Gratiot's pronunciation has been unfortunately bastardized into 'Grash-it'; which should be more like 'Grat-ee-oh', as the French would correctly say it. No doubt the New England Yankees who originally settled and developed the county in the early 1800s had a hand in that. Charles Chouteau Gratiot; for whom the county and Fort are named, was born in St. Louis, which was Spanish Upper Louisiana territory in the late 1700s. His father was originally a fur trader from the Illinois area....

Visiting from Ontario, we asked a store clerk how Fort Gratiot was pronounced. We were told " Fort Graysheow". On a later visit a border guard quizzed us on the pronunciation, told us it was pronounced phonetically, then said he was from Buffalo - there on a power trip I guess. 😂
@gplunk
@gplunk 2 месяца назад
'Graysheow' actually makes some sense; from a French speaking perspective....
@gplunk
@gplunk 2 месяца назад
Although perhaps closer to 'Grah-shee-o'. 'Tiot' is typically pronounced like 'tion' (ex. Attention), w/ the 'ti' pronounced 'sh', and the last letter silent....
