And the Michigan Wolverines also birth the beast we call "modern college football", starting in 1969, via the hole that Yost dug, Canham carpeted, and Bo filled to the tune of over 101,000 for every game @ The Big House - a streak that continues to this very day. ✊
Michigan is the oldest elite FBS program. On Oct 22, 1887, Michigan traveled to South Bend, IN and taught Notre Dame the game of football. Then Notre Dame played its very first football game in history against the Wolverines. The game was called early with Michigan leading 8 to 0. Michigan would go on to win the first 8 games and continues to lead the venerable football series with the Irish. The origin of ND's nickname, the Irish, was also derived from its football rivalry with Michigan. Michigan and ND are the 2 oldest FBS programs and is the oldest rivalry in the FBS, although the rivalry has never been a continuous one.
This was the dedication game, not the first game in the stadium. It looks so strange to see the stadium surrounded by open fields. Wolverine Historian, where do you get all these great films? Thank you so much for sharing them!
Not really, Michigan still has a 15 game lead in this series. Ohio State endured a long losing streak to Michigan prior to this streak of losses to OSU. However, it's no longer a streak of losses since Ohio State was forced to forfeit the 2010 game, and Michigan won the 2011 game.
looks like it must've been hard to hold the camera and pilot the plane at the same time. the guy was probably a pro from hollywood, cause at the time you couldn't just attach a camera to a plane.
That was friggin' sweet! Was that the last time Michigan beat Ohio State? Sure seems that long! ;-) I keeed... I keed.. I can't wait to show this to my U of M alumna wife... she'll love it!
