Michio Kaku on what makes a supergenius.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MICHIO KAKU:
Dr. Michio Kaku is the co-founder of string field theory, and is one of the most widely recognized scientists in the world today. He has written 4 New York Times Best Sellers, is the science correspondent for CBS This Morning and has hosted numerous science specials for BBC-TV, the Discovery/Science Channel. His radio show broadcasts to 100 radio stations every week. Dr. Kaku holds the Henry Semat Chair and Professorship in theoretical physics at the City College of New York (CUNY), where he has taught for over 25 years. He has also been a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, as well as New York University (NYU).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
Michio Kaku: If you watch the "Big Bang Theory" on CBS television you see these clueless nerds who are doormats when it comes to the opposite sex, right. And you realize is there any basis in reality? First of all none of my friends are like that and all my friends are physicists, right.
Well there is a kernel of truth and that is some of these individuals may suffer from something called Asperger’s Syndrome which is a mild form of autism. These people are clueless when it comes to social interactions. They don’t look you in the eye, for example. And yet they have fantastic mental and mathematical capabilities. We think, for example, that Isaac Newton had Asperger’s. The greatest scientist of all time was very strange. He had no friends to speak of. He could not carry a decent conversation and yet here he was spitting out some of the greatest theories in the history of science. Calculus. The Universal Law of Gravitation. The Theory of Optics. And we think he had Asperger’s Syndrome.
Now Asperger’s Syndrome is a mild form of autism and in autism we have what are called savants. That is people that have an IQ of maybe 80 but have incredible mathematical and musical abilities. In fact, some of these individuals can hear one symphony and just play it by memory on a piano. Other people could be in a helicopter, have a helicopter ride over Manhattan, see the entire New York harbor and then from memory sketch the entire harbor. In fact, if you want to see it go to JFK Airport in New York City and you will see it as you enter the international terminal. So what is it about these people? Well, first of all a lot of them had injuries to the left temporal lobe. One individual had a bullet as a child go right through the left temporal lobe. Another person dove into a swimming pool and injured very badly the left temporal lobe. And these people wound up with incredible mathematical abilities as a consequence. And so what is it about their brains?
Well Einstein’s brain has actually been preserved. Einstein when he died had an autopsy in which case the pathologist stole the brain without permission of the family. He just realized that he was sitting next to something historic, took the brain, took it home with him, and it was sitting in a jar in his home for decades. He even drove across the country with the jar inside his trunk. And there’s even a TV special where you can actually see the cut up brain of Albert Einstein. And you realize first of all the brain is a little bit different. You can’t tell by looking at it that it’s so remarkably different but you realize that the connections between the prefontal cortex and the parietal lobe - a connection that is accentuated in people that do abstract reasoning is thickened. So there definitely is a difference in the brain of Einstein. But the question is did it make Einstein or did Einstein make this change of the brain?
Are champions born or are they made? That still is not known because people who exercise mental abilities, mathematical abilities, they can thicken that part of the brain themselves. So we know that people who do well in mathematics, brain scans clearly show that their brains are slightly different from the average brain. So in conclusion, we’re still children with regards to understanding how this process takes place. Tonight don’t go home and bang yourself on the left temporal lobe. We don’t know how it works. We just know that in a tiny fraction of these cases people with injury to the left temporal lobe, some of the become super geniuses.

One thing I've thought of is this: If most of the universe is made out of unseen material/energy, then could there be a 2nd reality within out universe? Could _we_ be the real invisible universe, considering how much smaller we (things visible, light energy/matter) are?

I believe that dark matter and dark energy are the building blocks to the universe, because they are absolutely nothing at all. Darkness is the key to light (energy) and light is the key to darkness. Without darkness there could be no light visa versa. When I was younger and learned about dark energy, I couldn't wrap my head around it, but I looked across the room at a bottle of hand sanitizer when I noticed all of those tiny bubbles inside the clear gel. Those same bubbles were an outcome of an event or action. They could have come from the shaking in shipping, maybe from the gel being deposited into the bottle, or maybe even me shaking it. Whatever it was, it was there and was now in existence. It didn't change the state of the gel or make it deplete any faster; it was just pointless scars of an old pointless action. They float in the middle of something else being held together by the gel while all was bound inside of that bottle. believe the same principles apply to dark matter and dark energy along with the rest of the universe. In a universe filled with absolutely nothing, we are the the little bit of something. Maybe it's because two universes clashed at one point, or maybe we are the universe that is "just this way" in the endless amounts of universes in the infinite playground of space. Only time will tell, i guess.
@jaivignesh173

The explanation has been quantified well. It simply talks about the relative density of the universe .the implosion of universe can only be done by dark matter when density becomes -1 then space absorption takes place

I've heard it will take about a googol years for all the black holes to extinguish, then there is still some remnant radiation floating around for who knows how long after that. By that time, it's likely that a new universe will spontaneously erupt out of nothingness due to the laws of probability.

I'm a little confused. Is this video trying to say that there will be an actual end of the universe and all life? My next question is this video also saying that if mankind existed at that time we would b so advance that we could escape that fate and have a second life or an afterlife? We also are dealing with an energy source of an unknown origin, accordingly to this video. When I watch videos on this particular channel it seems that science is trying to say that all of creation is a designed for a reason and isn't as random as it seems.
@nebi75

No reason at all, Michio wants to say that : eventually we can master the ways of universe and time-space so we can avoid the end of universe as a whole human civilization, not personally. The universe still has a lot of time to die, we do not need to concern now, but you and me never see that ending since we are mortal and when we die, we will just be removed from existence, thats all, no afterlife. There is a salvation for human civilization but there is no salvation for a single person, you and me. Although one day humans can find immortality, who knows.
@helasmoh
@helasmoh 9 лет назад
Aribeth De Tylmarande There is indeed a lot of time for the universe, however, remember that time is an illusion so for you and me the moment we die we will face Judgment day then immediately after that some will be saved and some will be left behind in the next cycle of the universe. There will be no escaping from this universe or the next one. My goal is to remind you of your contract with your creator and I did. My other videos are available for you if you decide to know WHY you're here and I already posted the link for one of them.

helasmoh Well the good thing is I was raised as a Muslim, so I know what you are talking about, but this video is science and it explains scientific concepts, it is not related with your beliefs or any other belief. That does not sound scientific to me. Cheers.

The universe and reality as we know it is... a hologram - a reality made up with time and space for us to have experiences, no different then our beginning attempts in creating various realities to experience in video games. Yet, here we are in one attached with feelings, emotions, etc. Since science has no idea what the 95% of the universe is and only 4% is made up of atoms, the building blocks of you and I. Then what is holding that 4% together in vibration, frequency to actually....matter. Wouldn't it take a consciousness, a thought to hold it all together? A plan, a program...something. What determines or dictates that the 4% will create the universe, world, planet, house, car, human form....we live in? So can we theorize that dark matter and or dark energy is collective consciousness holding the entire universe together or creating the whole universe as we see it. Why wouldn't it be? We maybe continuing to create the same thing in this life - through a multiverse of various levels of existence for our consciousness. If we already have a world we live in, with so many things to do, why must we play video games to have multiple other experiences or entertainment? Is this going down the rabbits hole? I will end here.....

On the other hand, Dark Energy with extremely low density, is hypothesized to be that kind of energy that accelerates the expansion of the universe. We do not know exactly what they are, but they are different.

I am sure that you do not speak in exact meaning, but you use various synonyms, idioms, slang, abstractions, and a host of other forms of language in order to convey your ideas. If people spoke purely in exact, simple ideas, your argument would be logical. However, you are merely playing with words and that has no bearing on reality. Additionally, if you are basing your logical conclusion that there must be a "maker" of the entire universe on the context of some old bloke's single sentence, then you lack logic entirely.

But if there's no time then there's no causality because nothing is unstable. So, no creation(ality) so to speak, then the idea of a creator makes no sense, therefore irrelevant.

the logic behind the universe starting off, therefore it had a cause is based on the laws of causality, but the thing is we are taking about what happened before our universe and we have no evidence supporting the laws of causality existed then so that logic can't be assumed is true when we talk about this

man with no name In life there's 3 aspects, that define a person. There's two sides to those aspects, one of which we usually gravitate towards. 1st there's goals; whether they like to choose the first thing that's close, or seems good from the get go, then 'Invest' making it their dream come true. Or, 'Test' drive things... one dream is never quite perfect, so they get parts of it from others, changes, or updates. 2nd, When dealing with life: We 'Deny' things try to forgive, forget, & fill our lives with distraction, like it never happened. Or, 'Justify' things learning from & living with it. 3rd is home life, & family: There's 'Realist', that focuses on the 'Financial security of a (full time) career. Or, an 'Idealist', (full time) family life. Figure out which way the lean more towards should help.

1. Can black holes be used directly or indirectly as a form of energy? 2. How much potential energy can be captured? (I'm guessing its relative to the mass of the black hole...) 3. Can we "hold" the universe together, ie keep clusters of galaxies in place etc? (Or even clusters of clusters... etc) 4. Can it be sustained, the balance between mass and energy?

Good point. When I read elsewhere that dark matter was not visible in the EM spectrum I never considered that maybe we just didn't have the ability to see it yet. Perhaps string theory and parallel universes will someday account for the as of yet, unexplained properties of dark matter. Sidenote - I love this channel. Michio is the King, but he's no Haw-king.

there are 2 possibilities to move away from object: either objoect moves away from u (and thats the case of dark energy and "space expending itself"), or you move away from and object (in this case we would move away from other galaxies if we were pulled closer to the center of ours) - both situations would cause same visual effect on visable matter (like stars or galaxies) - the red shift

Well, new theories (one is particular from Princeton University) suggest that time (or entropy) may flow backwards in different parts of the Universe, and another shows that light changes as it travels through space. Some stars seem to have the ability to turn heavy elements into light elements. The theory of a cyclic Universe implies that it may have no beginning or end. I think that we have some more learning to do.

We all live simple lives and sometimes forget to look at the big picture. This Michio Kaku is my hero because he brings current facts to our attention and lets us further ponder unsolved dilemmas that actually mean something. Now if only everyone else thought like me and stopped watching Kim Kardashian we might get somewhere.

For the theory of the universe shrinking; it'd leads one to believe that if everything is returning to where it originally started off, it could start an *other* Big Bang. Which makes me wonder how many times this has gone on? It'd be good to know there's a cycle of renewal. (Perhaps Dark Energy is a product of this happening) But if this is the first and only time the Big Bang has happened, the other two theories kinda terrify me in knowing that everything is doomed to an existence without purpose.

What about the "Big Conjunction" The universe does not end by destroying itself, however, it ends by linking itself to another universe and in doing so ends the universe as it is to create a link of two universes within the multiverse. I find this most probably as you see two stars cannot become one, however, two star systems can link into a larger system, changing drastically both of their realities. I see the universe ending this way since as we observe it relates to other observations.

5. Can we use perhaps 2 black holes orbiting around one another indirectly as a form of energy? 6. If we attain immortality, ai and perhaps eventually a marriage of the two, Does anyone think we may still want to create more life? or just constantly improve on ourselves? 7. If the galaxies themselves aren't moving and rather its the space growing between them making (or causing the illusion of) them moving, can we make the space flow around them without it affecting them?
@vidyadeepen

Dear Michio, I am in full support of going beyond our universe but for us to have a good chance of success, we will have to transition from our current way of living/thinking in this world, which is driven by personal gain for the most part to gains for humanity. This can be best achieved by harnessing the human capital to make all contribution toward space exploration, which is not currently done so.
@ExtantFrodo2
@ExtantFrodo2 11 лет назад
the expansion applies to the spaces between galaxy clusters. The galaxies within a cluster are gravitationally bound and will eventually combine to become one huge galaxy with no observable galaxies or CMBR as they will have moved off out of sight. Their light will be stretched out below any threshold of detectability.
