Mick Doohan was the defending champion but his team mate was the prickly Alex Criville who took Mick out at Eastern Creek the year before - here is a cracker race with invaluable commentary from Barry Sheene - compliments of an old video I taped from the Channel Ten coverage....

Two strokes burning leaded fuel... AHHH the good old days. This was the last year for leaded fuel and The riders used to always talk about how the bikes were never the same afterwards. Which makes sense as they were developed with lead fuels. What I loved most about the leaded fuel was that sweet smell! I really miss it, lol...

How easy it is to speak without knowing and just repeat the popular saying, I invite you to watch that race at Eastern Creek the entire last lap... when Doohan only looks at his rival braking, he takes Crivillé out of the curve and kicks him ( just like Rossi did with Marques years later) watch in slow motion from minute 50:50 to 50:57 (0.25 speed) I'm glad he knocked him down for foul... because if you're so fast and superior you don't need to do that. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IC8JYs2Wo1M.html

Dorna should allow 2strokes participate on motogp
@niko7903
@niko7903 4 года назад
They did in 2002. 4 stroke vs 2 Smoke for the first year of MotoGp. The 2 strokes had a pretty big disadvantage. The thought has pretty much been that 2 strokes can compete with 4 strokes with twice the cc. But on dirt and pavement, 450cc 4 strokes beat 250cc 2 strokes, and 990cc 4s beat 500cc 2s. Forget the name of the manufacturer, but they built a modern 550cc 2 stroke recently. But, I think you would need 650 to 750cc for a 2 stroke to be able to compete. I would LOVE it, but it won't happen. They want to develop tech that translates and sells for the street.

Yes... Alex Criville is and has always been a Toady... he only looks good when he's able following the leader and in virtually every race when leading he slows the field... Plus he typically makes a lot of excuses for his failures rather than accepting his errors, not a very serious person...
@JoGoLo
@JoGoLo Год назад
I was never a Crivillé fan but I was the only one capable of following Doohan, and the one who made excuses was the champion, seeing how a rookie learned quickly and disputed the races, as he did before with Rainey and Schwantz, although television always sells a perfect image of the winner and as in F1 all the big teams have a preferred driver (usually the champion) and secondary.
@Sheikhassan235
@Sheikhassan235 Год назад
@@JoGoLo What matters in the end has always been consistency which is what made Doohan such a great rider. Yet still the most exciting rider was Schwantz. Rainey was a techno not very smooth during transitions where it really mattered and which claimed him...
@JoGoLo
@JoGoLo Год назад
@@Sheikhassan235 I agree... I love Kevin was the most spectacular. I don't know what "Toady" means but I guess it's not a good thing. I admit that Doohan was the best, but you can't deny that Crivillé was too. The bike had been built since 1990 for Mike and he was more experienced. Regarding Wayne, he was also the fastest at the time and if it hadn't been for his accident, I don't think Doohan would have had it so easy since they used the same driving style, putting himself first and pushing. And following him is a smart way to win a race. The one in front is revealing his strong areas and his weak points and requires more concentration so he wears more. In the end, he won in 1999 and retired, as happened to Kevin in 1993. When you lose the rival that motivates you and young people come after you with more desire... you simply give way.
@Sheikhassan235
@Sheikhassan235 Год назад
@@JoGoLo like any sport athletes come into a peake period where all facilities, if they are present from the start, come together. The definitive thing giving the edge is probably how long these remain available which it seems the determinant. Being on a bike at the speeds these riders reached required extremes and as in any extreme condition time becomes the determinant. In many ways much depends on just how long a rider is able managing being on that extreme edge of knowing, sensing where that edge is and not losing the concentration needed remaining there. Rainey was fast but I noticed often that he had to recovered his bike a lot both entering and exiting corners. In those fleeting fractional seconds were the clues that he was over the edge suggesting nothing good would come of it. At the speeds these guys rode I often compared winners to ballet dancers or tight rope walkers where mistaking weight shift by fraction of pounds determined if or not the rider would continue... balance being everything and the ability to feel and sense this meaning all. Alex was fast, he learned much from Doohan but mentally he often fell into a fog which left him out. I think anyone climbing onto a five hundred class bike is to be commended but there will be winners... those typically able holding all facilities together for the duration...
@JoGoLo
@JoGoLo Год назад
@@Sheikhassan235 Correct! In any case, the motorcycles of the late 80s and early 90s were not the same as half a decade ago. They had become more controllable and there were no longer just a few who could carry them so fast, as an example of the accidents that Doohan himself had at that time. And unfortunately with the 4 strokes everything became easier, losing the show.

Then you are missing something great : now, there is only one second on the grid between ThE First 12 sometimes... In 97, you can only see one great Rider (Doohan), and a couple more could be saved. However, today IS ThE other way round: except 3 or 4, they are all totally determined riders with loaads of talent, willing to win at any price. Besides, todays bikes fly And lean like hell, And ThE passsings haappen all ThE time. They ALL go at their personal top powers, risking Up to the very límite, which IS always something you can feel And enjoy. I have followed ThE sport for ThE last 40 years, there have been better and worse moments, but 2020 IS ten times better than 1997, at least for me.
