He broke onto the scene in the early seventies with his first hit "Room full of roses." It wasn't until they installed multiple mechanical bulls in "Gilley's Club," founded by Mickey Gilley and Sherwood Cryer, that Pasadena became famous. The famed movie Urban Cowboy was filmed in Mickey Gilley's club. With 17 number one hits, restaurants, night clubs and a theatre in Branson Missouri, Gilley certainly has proven his staying power. On this episode of "InnerVIEWS with Ernie Manouse," our conversation with American country music singer and musician, Mickey Gilley.

I've literally been Mickey gilley's neighbor for the last 16 years. if you look over my back fence that's all of his property in Vista villas 2. Actually let my kid feed his horses over the fence carrots and apples. I see him from time to time drive out of his property, he has to pass my house. I've spoke to him maybe twice he is the most down to earth gracious man you could meet. He literally put Pasadena Texas on the map. What a life he's lived.

I remember when he lived in the Vista villas area and I'm definitely not proud to say but my brother burglarized his house in the early 80s. My brother passed away in December of 83.

Lived in Baytown and went to the original Gilleys....Never talked to Mickey Gilley but saw him sitting at a table with some woman plus I did get to see George Jones then ..The way he sang though he must have been under the influence of alcohol from the way he sang...I'm thinking it must have been during the days when he drank a lot...

Sherwood owned half of Pasadena and almost all the bar's, Ice Houses and Sherri's convenient stores. I remember waiting one day for 12 noon on a Sunday to buy Beer at Sherri's on Preston Blvd. and Sherwood was in front of the store with his Mexican helpers loading Beer to take to another store, anybody that didn't know Sherwood would have never guessed he was a multi-millionaire. That Old Man was as tough as nails and worked as hard as anybody that worked for him. To this day there's a lot of people that speak his name with respect and some with fear !

There's a ice house off of 225 called Debbie's it's no longer there it was right next to the plants. I sat there one day and had a beer with Mr cryer , you would never thought in a million years he was a multi-millionaire in the way he dressed. He was very feared. People that really knew the real Sherwood cryer, knew he had Pasadena in his pocket. And if you messed with him you might just come up missing

I know I'm entering into the chat very late but I appreciate hearing peoples memories from the time. I was born at Bayshore hospital in 1972 and grew up in the Pasadena area. I fondly remember going with my dad through the Sherri's drive through window when he made his beer runs. I remember a pretty blonde woman that used to make me blush every time. She used to tell me how cute and handsome I was. Oh the memories.

@@lastniceguy1993I remember going to Debbie's after work for a cold beer when I worked at the Plants. I used to go to Gs ice house too. I love reading other peoples recollections of the time. Times have changed for the worst and I sure miss the 80s and 90s.

Lovely man, beautiful voice, astute businessman, comes across as very genuine. Happy to have seen Mickey Gilley and Johnny Lee in Denver during the Urban Cowboy craze. Outstanding concert. Have numerous MG albums along with my favorite MG songs on my iPod and Phone. Much prefer Mickey Gilley’s sound and style to his cousin, Jerry Lee. Miss you Mickey. R.I.P.

Mickey short changes himself. Great songwriters were a major part of music (all styles) back in the day. People act like it's a taboo to not write your own songs, or it lessens your talent, but that's just not true. Plenty of examples exist of people getting a hit covering another song that didn't give the original artist the same success. A great artist makes the song when it's all said and done. But a great songwriter plus a great team of musicians can be the most powerful combination of all. It's all good, though. Just shows that Mickey's modesty is more important than his ego. Love his style. When he sings, you just feel good. :)

Mickey exaggerates calling Gilleys a "club"...it was called a "Beer Joint" as the other places he played off Spencer Highway in Pasadena in the 60's and 70s. I grew up less than a mile from those local beer joints and we hated them for all the drunk driving they caused.

Reminiscent of Hank Williams and Hank Snow in uncanny resemblance.I read the memoirs of Jerry Lee Lewis and saw Merle Haggard on television and remembered Hank Snow. Have the recordings of Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn among my favorite country duos. God bless you and family

I believed Sherwood had the mechanical Bull patented. There was even one in the Texas Saloon in Yokosuka Japan, after three or four broke arms and twisted necks the base put it off limits for base personal around 81' or 82' .

I knew there was something off about Garth Brooks. Urban Cowboy was one of the best country films ever. Great music by great artists. Charlie Daniels Band. Mickey Gilley, Johnny Lee. Every one of these songs we're better than Garth Brooks music. Those real country music. Garth Brooks made his millions and quit for 10-15 years then made a comeback. And you don't hear much about him again. Yes I like Garth Brooks first album.
