Thompson's life in the fast lane provides ample material for the filmmakers. From the drag strips, to desert racing to land speed record challenges, to car building, designing and race promotion Thompson earned his place as a certified automotive icon.
He started calling himself the Fastest American on Wheels in 1958 after setting a record of 194 miles per hour. His goal was to break the world record of 394.2 miles per hour set in 1947. He began to build a world land speed record car -- the Challenger 1.
Thompson took his new car out to the Bonneville Salt Flats on October 6, 1959 and piloted it to a World Speed Record of 363.48 miles per hour. He also set a world speed record in A/BFS Class that remained unbeaten until1990 when Al Teague broke it at 389.372 miles per hour in his streamliner.
In 1960, Thompson returned to the Bonneville Salt Flats with a modified Challenger 1 for another record attempt. Its four 410 cubic-inch engines secured his title when he set a new American record at 330.51 miles per hour. He bested the world speed with a run at 407 miles per hour (which was faster than any man had drive a car before) but crashed before he could make a second run and thus secure the official record.
The Challenger 1 had its last record run two year later on July 24, 1962. The poor conditions of the salt flats halted the first attempt because he couldnt get any traction as the car bounced on the salt bed. He found a smoother part of the Flats for another run and turned in a speed of 357 mph. But he announced that the Challengers days on the Salt Flats were over.

It was 1960 when Mickey Thompson became known as, "the fastest man on earth," after breaking the 400mph barrier when he hit 406.60 mph besting John Cobb's one-way Land speed record of 402mph.

The Salt Flats is the only place I know where you can drive 100 MPH with your hands off the wheel and even close your eyes and not hit a thing.

@deep10453 its not that simple. and you have to realize he built and designed that car himself, from scratch. chassis, engines, body, in 1960. 650km/h in 1960 is pretty impressive.

the story I heard from a statement made by his mechanic voight.. the challenger didnt blow a drive shaft ,,that was a furfey the challenger didnt have drive shafts. he blew an engine the story goes when going into third gear one gear box didnt go into gear..challenger ran 4 individual gearboxes. so when he hit the gas again the unladen engine revved its self to pieces ...but Pontiac couldnt admitt one of the engines Failed ,so the team blamed it on a (drive shaft)

Far more impressive these speeds were attained with wheel driven, internal combustion engines and not jet engine thrust. Mickey was a mechanical genius... his legacy lives on.

They first tried it without the superchargers and only got to the mid 200s, then went home raised more money, and came back for another try with the superchargers and set the record.

I was calling out yet another F1 fan on these message boards that constantly feel the need to compare Formula 1 to every other motor sport, especially when the numbers don't go their way. Go back through the replies and find the post by James Shunt. This guy comes out of nowhere with some random F1 reference and some random small displacement speed records that are no where near the top land speed records. Are all F1 fans this insecure or just the ones on RU-vid message boards?

That's for a turbine (jet engine) powered vehicle that's not "wheel driven." Basically a plane driven on the ground. The record for a "wheel driven" piston engine was set Agust 21, 1991 at the Bonneville Salt Flats, by Elwin "Al" Teague with his Spirit of '76 (Torque Speed-o-Mative Streamliner) powered by a supercharged hemi. His time was 425.050. Fastest production car still being made is the Bugatti Veyron which has been clocked at over 250 mph. Not bad out of the dealership.

The Salt is strange, it's somewhat similar to ice racing. You can have all the power in the world but if you can't get it to the ground,you're just "spinning your wheels".... then you're likely to spin your car. My first trip out,somebody spun five times,straightened out and kept going- that was at only 165mph. It increases with speed. Mickey didn't crash,though,he broke a U-joint and didn't have a spare so he couldn't make the required return pass within one hour.

So what? There's no Chevy's in Formula 1 and that's the most technically advanced motor sport in the world. Stirling Moss rode a small 1489 cc 4 cylinder MG in 1957 to 246mph. A 1506 cc version (no more than 92 cui) reached 254,91mph in Oct 3'rd 1959. That being said the Speed Demon is a fine job for a privateer with limited resources.

Find me a F1 that does 400 mph...what is it with you guys and F1?....a fine motorsport, yes, I enjoy qualifying but the racing is boring to me...that being said, who care's about most technically advanced...I'm a motorhead and enjoy racing of all sorts, but most technically advanced means jack shit if you are not the fastest....NHRA is all I have to say...find me a F1 motor powering a race car to 337 mph in the 1/4 mile, I'll be impressed...till then, I'll take my stone age, push rod V-8's....

Pontiac! There is a reason for that. I’d bet it’s the long connecting rod but who knows. They make great torque. I’d bet these were not only blown but on alcohol for that power. The torque numbers are likely close or higher than the horsepower.
@McLarenMercedes
@McLarenMercedes 11 лет назад
Find one NHRA engine of the same displacement that can match the power output unblown? You're comparing a hydrogen bomb to a 44 Magnum saying one is much more impressive since it can wipe out an entire city. Well, you can't very well carry it in your pocket now can you? Endurance racing is top dog the way I see it. If you can race something hard for 4 hours and it still holds it's more impressive than some stunt driving for a few seconds where such tolerances don't even have to be considered.

james marshall According to the New York Times on Nov. 12, 1965, on a stretch of the Bonneville Salt Flats in northwestern Utah, Bill Summers in the Goldenrod - zoomed past the clock on two separate runs within an hour - setting the record with an average top speed of 409.277 miles per hour. That broke the record of 403.135 set a year earlier, on July 17, 1964, by Donald Campbell, an Englishman. Before Mr. Campbell, the record had been held for 17 years by another Englishman, John Cobb, who had driven 394.196 m.p.h. on Sept. 16, 1947. On Aug. 21, 1991, the Goldenrod record was broken by Al Teague, when his car averaged 409.986 miles per hour. The record now stands at 458.440, set by Don Vesco on Oct. 18, 2001 .Mickey Thomspon's son is at Bonneville this week trying to break these records. So stay tuned.

Hi, Thats fun information (smiles!) ,.. Going 394 mph,, back in 1947 Mr Cobb was a genious.,And now in 3/4 of the year 2014 the record is only 64 miles per hour faster than in 1947..-> 394--458 MPH .. in closing im gonna hold on to my computer monitor with my hands at 10 o'clock & 2 o'clock to wait and see this weeks Bonnie Results.. (hope mickey son comes home a winner) Big Thanks again - K R A
