July 13th, 2001. Named as Fight of the Year 2001 by Ring Magazine, the tough and ever courageous “Irish” Micky Ward squares off with one of the most unorthodox fighters in the history of the sport; Emanuel Augustus (birth name: Emanuel Burton) aka “The Drunken Master” where spectacular back and forth action took place as both fighters gave their hearst and souls in the ring on this day.
In March 2000, Micky Ward took on Shea Neary in an action packed bout where both fighters engaged largely in a phone booth war. Ward would eventually triumphed over the very courageous Neary, and bagged the WBU Super Lightweight crown.
In May 2001, he would lose a UD against Antonio Diaz but came back with a spectacular first round knockout victory via his patented left hook over Steve Quinonez. In his next bout, he is set to fight Emanuel Augustus who took the fight in 2 weeks’ notice.
In September 1999, Emanuel Augustus lost to Antonio Diaz via UD in his first and only world title shot. Diaz retained his IBA Super Lightweight title. After the loss, Augustus went 2-3, losing to notable oppositions in Floyd Mayweather Jr and John John Molina. His next fight would be against Ward.
Going into the fight, Ward and Augustus had records of 36-10 and 24-17 respectively. Ward had 5 first round knockout victories while Augustus had none.
This fight featured great infighting among these two warriors with both hurting each other with body shots. However, only Ward scored a knockdown with his patented left hook to the body in Round 9.
By CompuBox stats, Augustus landed 70 more power shots than Ward after 8 rounds. In spite of the stat numbers, the fight was very close as both had a nearly equal good and bad moments throughout the 10 round war.

After this fight, Ward would lose a UD against Jesse James Leija. After the loss, Ward would take on the late Arturo “Thunder” Gatti in what is the first of a legendary trilogy where Ward triumphed via a very close decision in their first meeting. He would lose the next 2 bouts in clear but explosively competitive fashion. Ward retires from the sport after the rubber match against Gatti with a final record of 38(27)-13.
The Gatti-Ward trilogy is considered to be one of the greatest rivalries in the history of the sport.

On the other hand, Augustus went 5-3-2 before taking on Alex Trujillo. Augustus bagged the IBA Super Lightweight Crown via UD. After this victory, he went 11-10 from June 2004 to January 2011 before retiring with a final record of 38(20)-34-6.
