Survival kits are worthless if left behind! The point of this kit is it's small enough to carry EVERY SINGLE DAY on your keys. IT IS NOT A COMPLETE KIT, just a bare bone, initial prototype idea I had of a few useful items: kits the size of a 9V battery have lots of limitations! Here's my original, keychain sized PSK built in an Altoids Smalls empty tin I mounted to my key chain with a zip tie: • Altoids SMALLS Surviva...
Here's a quickie, follow-up, JOKE video for a little laugh: • Tic Tac Self-Destruct ...

I love this kind of stuff - both the compact serious survival and minor disaster kits fondly remind me of happy days in Wolf Cubs Canada, making our "emergency kits" out of those tiny, thin Anacin/Aspirin tin boxes that went "pop-pop" when opened and closed. Having one in my pocket mage me feel a bit like a superhero. And I was always big on utility belts and bandoliers worn by heroes and crimefighters like Batman and Spidey. Part of me still thinks it'd be boss to wear such a belt with all that gear and assist citizens in need. Hypoglycemia? Here's a glucose tablet. Bee sting? EpiPen, antihistamine, and typical cream right at hand. Upset child? A bit of candy and a balloon animal! Something for every contingency. Perhaps I'll make one someday, even if it's only for my city's summer rodeo arts and crafts exhibition. "The Urban Citizen Utility Belt". (No knockout gas pellets or Batarangs, sadly, but the life-preserving gear you'd need to reel in a fish or suture a wound, definitely.)

Whenever one of your vids show up on my subscription feed I know I'm in for a thought-provoking treat. Yeah, have to agree with your second thoughts about using Tinderquick as a filtering medium for water. I don't know for a fact what that flame accelerant is that they're impregnated with, but I wouldn't want to drink it. A few suggestions: ~ there's always the folding paper coffee filter as an alternative; some of the smaller cone sizes would probably fold/roll up small enough to fit in your mini-tic tac kit. (The Haro 02 filters look like good candidates). ~ I don't know the brand but one of the juicebox'/pouch manufacturers includes a tiny telescoping drinking straw with their products. Trimming either end should give you straw that fits into a small container like your glow fob, but would expand to a more usable length (no filter capability though). ~ Consider substituting that single tic tac with a more survival-oriented tablet, like a coated aspirin (analgesic or for initial treatment of a heart attack/stroke victim), an antihistamine (for allergic reactions like an insect bite) or even a single water purification tablet (chlorine dioxide or crystalized iodine). Love your idea of using a condom to make the glow fob/survival kit waterproof. Because as any self-respecting survivalist will tell you, condoms also make surprisingly good water containers. I'm not normally full of helpful ideas, but your video channel inspires me to think creatively/out of the box!

I love when I get an email saying you have anew video posted. I know I'm in for something cool AGAIN and you never let us down. Some thing I do for water treatment, is I use a Q-tip shaft that's plastic and hollow. I hot glue one end closed and then filled it with potassium permanganate and hot glue it shut. It's not the best for treating water, but it's better than nothing and it never goes bad and that Q-tip shaft holds enough to treat A LOT of water. I bet some thing like that would fit real nice in one of these kits. Keep up the great work.
@MeZillch
@MeZillch 8 лет назад
+wjf213 Yes, I mention instead of, or in addition to the single Tic Tac a good idea might be a water treatment tablet. Most of my kits carry a vial of bleach and or Katadyn MP-1 water purification tablets, plus a watertight bag in case one can't find or make any container.
@wjf213
@wjf213 8 лет назад
+MeZillch Oh I agree with you completely about having a tablet or something, but those single wrapped tablets just take up way too much room in a tiny kit and they HAVE to stay in the wrapping until needed. Bleach is the same way, even in a sealed straw or its original container, it leaches out and in a few months, has lost almost all it's disinfectant qualities. That's why I chose PP over everything else for tiny to small kits, the shelf life is almost forever, the amount of water I can treat in such a small package is huge, plus the cost to replace is less than a penny. It's not the best for sure, but for me in such a tiny package, it's the best option. I actually got the idea from you when you were putting things in straws, I started thinking of what's smaller and straw like that I can put PP in and that's when I looked at the Q-tip shaft. Keep up the great work.

Your channel and ingenious solutions are really fascinating! Like you I EDC a number of items, generally a medium sized SAK on a carabiner off a beltloop in my back pocket with my keys, attached to this I have a True Utility Firestash (peanut lighter); in my coin pocket I generally EDC a LM Squirt in black, a small Clipper lighter, and an olight, all upright fitting exactly, and the plastic lighter in the middle so my multitool and flashlight don't get scratched. I don't like bulky items in my pockets, belt pouches if I'm in an urban setting, or bulky keychains. So after I saw kitbashed survival's review of the expensive Wazoo Cache Survival Belt, I made one myself with a cheap moneybelt from ebay which I have put a lot of items into including duct tape, cordage, firesteel, stormproof matches, purification tablets, snarewire, small fishing kit, safety pins, alc wipes, wetwipe, bandaids, and cash.

Your stuff is amazing-a true talent for coming up with needs seemingly almost 'reversed engineered.' Your understanding of space utilization/efficiency is off the charts. A sort of EDC 'geek' myself, I try to make every micro inch count on what I carry with me, but nothing like what you do. Your solar charging system is awesome. I think NASA could take a few pointers from you in how to engineer things while saving millions of dollars at the same time! Keep up the great ideas.

Calcium based pool shock will produce bleach for water purification. Just a few grains per liter should do it. It can be sealed from air in a piece of straw. I always put some on my paracord bracelets with your recommended produce bag (cut down) Always fun videos.

Always a treat to see one of your videos has been posted! I have also had some issues with the S-Biners coming open in my pocket and often have to fish around for my Ti3 or my titanium mini pry bar, both of which are on S-Biners. I actually thought you had put the Tic Tac in there as part of your fire making kit. If I'm not mistaken, they will take a flame and burn for some time, since they're essentially a pellet of sugar, although I don't have any on hand to test before I post this. If so, used in conjunction with your tinder, they'd add some oomph to your fire making capabilities. Anyhow, thoroughly enjoyed this video, as always.

I got to see the docu about the FOX 40 whistle and grew to appreciate the work done so I bought one. I wear a lanyard that has some survival things on it. Sure I look geeky but I have things with me at all times really saves a lot of time not having to go searching for things. That fox 40 whistle is great to get family attention real fast and at a distance. They hear a FOX 40 it is sort of like my signature. I have taken file to my keys and removed metal from them this way I don;t have to carry that additional weight on the lanyard. The way you can market this is make this where it attaches to your shoes. Who ever loses their shoes? Having a light that turns on in the dark on your shoes can be considered a safety feature that can save you from being struck by a car? You might want to adapt your laser and light to accept a coin cell sized battery? That would go a long way in reducing size. Not near as much storage but when going micro you want to go to the extreme. IDK if you are aware of the locking S clips but they use a tiny cam to lock them in place I have replaced all my S clips with lockable clips and ever since I have not lost a single item off my lanyard.

Using the key tag a micro utility knife can be made. Remove the spine of the blade, insert the modded blade in the tag, insert a thin clip loop (or small easy open key ring) in the hole for keeping closed. To use: remove the clip, extend the blade, pinch the blade in the tag with fingers while using.

A squash clamp helps deaden the rattle, as I demonstrate with my Altoids Smalls bit kit in the attached video, and also inserting a bedding made from (edible) cotton balls, top and bottom layers perhaps glued to the tin ideally, might help. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gqseV5yKjuw.html

in the UK we have clipper lighters, the spark generator in them is small and removable to be able to change the flint. you should take a look

+darronjknight Thanks. I'm not a smoker so I rarely buy lighters but I think the Clippers are less common in the US. If I see one in a shop I'll probably buy one to check it out but in the meantime I watched this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pBVub2-vf6M.html The spark device is indeed extractable but there is no chamber to hold tinder in it. I guess you could rig one with tape or something.

+MeZillch thanks for the reply, ex smoker myself thankfully :-) the bonus with the clipper spark device is how easy it is to replace the flint

does the battery charge even when the switch is off
@MeZillch
@MeZillch 8 лет назад
+Hungrybear gaming Good question. Since this was just a rough prototype to see what was possible I was more concerned with slapping it all together with minimal effort, to see what might fit in something the size of a 9V battery, rather than adding complexities such as desoldering the LED from the circuit board to install the defeat switch there, hence the battery charging system would still continue to work even when the light was off. It was much easier to install the switch to the battery lead itself but in a real design I think you make a good case that the battery ought to charge even if the light is switched off.

Not a real fan when it comes to micro kits even if it its a part of a group of items. BUT, this playing with solar cells, led light and rechargeble battery was pretty neat. I liked it a lot. I think its a setup I will do some testing with myself. I am already using a solar powered charger for phones and stuff, and they really are handy. Thanks for the idea.

Lsd reference int the middle of tic tac survival? Hell yea. I can dig it.
@MeZillch
@MeZillch 8 лет назад
+william kapanek The funny things is they REALLY do refer to those batteries as LSD. When nickel metal hydride batteries first came out they had an issue that they would self discharge even in storage so they had to be charged up immediately before use. This made them a poor choice for an item that doesn't get used very often just sitting on a shelf or in a survival kit. Then they invented Low Self Discharge and the battery suddenly became much more useful.

I salvage them, plus a battery recharging circuit, out of a product I buy at the Dollar Tree store, the same place I buy my Tic Tacs from: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f1Aw7DPymgY.html

Great idea. Does seem like you could add a little more to it though. Like a sewing needle (maybe pre-threaded with floss?)

Yes. I show a needle in a similarly small kit here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oWwSqYlqZHE.html

Tic Tac glowfobs are an ongoing series and this video is essentially part 4, the first time I've actually integrated any level of a survival kit into it. Part one explains how I made it out of a $1 device bought at the Dollartree store:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f1Aw7DPymgY.html

Im giving you advice, for filtering water with straw use activated charcoal, store it in the small bottle (activated charcoal filters air and water, so it'd be better to be air-tight sealed). Than put at one end your cotton in your straw, activated charcoal, and another cotton. What and how much activated charcoal can filter out depends upon how much it is used already.
@MeZillch
@MeZillch 6 лет назад
Sounds good. I don't advertise any of my water filtering methods as being perfectly safe but rather only "better than nothing" because I have no easy way to test for cryptosporidium and Giardia .
