In this Vocal Microphone Buyers Guide, Josefina Asconape (bit.ly/2coRIy8) helps us demo 9 popular vocal mics across the microphone price landscape. We used the same very light compression on each mic and added no equalization to heighten the differences between them. The microphones in order of appearance are as follows:

That MD441 sounds absolutely gorgeous on her voice, very controlled and detailed. U87ai and TLM-103 were very nice as well and might fit a "modern" mix better, but I personally have a preference for warmer vocals. The Sony was very nice as well. I don't know what people are hearing on the Royer though, it sounds way way too thin to cut through most mixes!

To me, the Royer sounded the fattest and most natural. Al lot of frequency content there, stuff you can't add to the signal w effects.

TLM-103 and U87 are just superb BUT I'm blown away by the Coles 4038 and how smooth, crisp & natural it sounds!

Proves that no matter what mic you put in front of great singer you will get a great result. With pitch like that she could sing death metal and make it sound good. Coles 4038 on Joni track really suited her voice. Hard to focus on mics when there’s an angel in the room.

Very good but I just wished you sang one song for all microphones. At the end I picked the song I like best (the French song at :50 seconds I think) instead of picking which microphone sounds the best for female vocalist. You have a beautiful voice by the way.

My vote, for what it's worth, goes to the Coles 4038, which edges out the MD 441 II.

A-MA-ZING rendition of Blue Kentucky Girl. Honestly brought tears to my eyes. The mic (the AKG) translated the song and your voice really well. And that's one of the primary factors to listen for, in a microphone (the other being noise, as eq-boosting, compression and limiting brings that forward).

Most of the mics sounded good but it’s better to hear how it sits in a song mix. By the way, what an amazing voice! She’s one of the best singers I’ve ever heard

Depends on the style which mix to use. Coles 4038 generally best C214 pop, country, r&b R121 2nd best all rounder but best for jazz Md441 hip hop

Great singer. The AKG 214 was ok. The Sony, sennheiser, 103 and the Coles for me. I like the Royer, Shure, and 87 well enough as mics but I don’t think they work for her. The royer has a big mid range and sounds open but to me doesn’t flatter her voice. Although it does seem to sound like it is capturing her in that room. The Coles surprised me. I don’t use mine too much for vocals

Ditto John Burns and Luke Harper...Gosh, I lost track of what I was suppose to be listening to here. Such a great vocalist! Replayed the video to be fair, listen to the mics this time. STILL GOT LOST in the vocalist. But I enjoyed the mics. Own three (3) of them. Both Neumann's and the Blue Mouse. Never sounded this darn good. You rock Josefina! (smile)

For her voice the R0121 stood out for me, then the U87, C38B then the 4038. All different though, so, depends on the type of music and song, etc.

That Royer 121 was, to me, hands down, the best. And I thought it was just supposed to be a legendary guitar amp mic. Nothing here comes close to how open, warm, natural, and full that this mic sounded in this shootout. As a producer and based off of this demo, it would give me the best raw vocals to work with.

What's the rest of the recording chain? Loved the blue mouse for her in a modern setting, no frequencies stood out but had a nice even brightness to it. Coles 4038 has such a warmth it sounds closest to an actual voice coming out of the speakers rather than a microphone recording of a singer.

Coles 4038 and the weird Sony mic, both were outstanding for her voice. The Nuemann's were all nice as usual, but that Royer was terrible for her voice. Thin and hyped, sounded like a Chinese condenser.

Great list. Only thing was, on the 441, was the bright switch on? Sounds like it might have been off which makes the high end sound a bit more rolled off compared to a lot of the other mics.

I only have 1 441, but I use it more than most other mics that I have. It's my favorite snare mic (if there's room enough to squeeze it in), only of my favorite horn mics, a great vocal mic for singer/ guitar players doing both at the same time or when other musicians are playing in the same room, just an overall amazingly versatile mic. I don't get why they aren't more popular.

That first AKG does have a lot of "artifacts" in high frequency or is it the compression? I like the blue mouse the most.

No, this is how it sounds. Had it for some time and it had the exact same artifacts. Absolutely horrible.

My question is if they are using a mic activator like a Cloudlifter or Dynamite on the SM7b or did they just turn up the pre on their interface?

If they have microphones this expensive, they probably have an interface with enough gain to drive them :p Also most of these are condensers which a cloudlifter can not be used with.

Her voice is so pleasing it was hard to notice anything else. I did notice too much room sound that also clouded the comparisons. Either way, she's hired!

I bet all those mics would sound better in another room but she is a great singer. Listen to the amount of echo (from the room and due to the distance she is from the mic) with the Blue Mouse. Don't know about that room. The mics that sound best in this test to me are the ones that attenuate the high end. That's a statement in its own right.

The SM7B is the only one that sounds focused, all the other mics sound roomy. Fazit, if you don't have a good sounding room, get an SM7B.

i have the c214, if you're thinking about buying it, I can recommend it for the price, if the right plugins are in use it sounds very clean and professional (rap/singing)

Interesting that the AKG brought out the damage on her vocal cords so much. Didn't hear the breathy escape as much on any of the other mics, with the AKG, it was on every note.

Great job on getting a vocalist that can actually sing. However, you guys left out the Sony C800G, Telefunken 251, Neumann/Telefunken u47, AKC C12, Neumann m149, and others. Come on guys. I know the type of product you guys have. This could have been so much more comprehensive.

#1 Coles 4038 all round, sounds great on anything godamnit #2 Royer for jazz/retro/vintage #3 Blue Mouse as a spare one for more dry vocal stuff HOT TAKE : Neumann are overrated.

It would be a lot more helpful if you used the same song for each mic. Different songs are performed differently, and I didn't find this at all helpful as a comparison.
