Microshift Advent: Serving Fun Havers.

Racing schedules have stalled in the year which kind of levels the field a little bit. Marginal gains and high performing but delicate/temperamental drivetrains are a more difficult prospect to spring for. If we are all out riding for fun, the criteria for good drivetrains options changes a little bit. Microshift Advent is kind of the first to really go down this direction and explore a tougher and more reliable offering while offering more than acceptable performance.. even if things are a little broken.

Wow. I guess I got lucky. Or even better, my local bike shop has some really knowledgeable employees. When I described that I'm a brand new rider with 80% road for exercise, and 20% dirt/gravel when I'm camping, they sold me a Specialized Sirrus X 3.0 with the Microshift Advent 1x9 (with clutch). I've had it for a month now, and I've put on about 250 miles. I bent the shifter when I was loading it in the car and it still shifted fine. I'm quite happy with the whole set up, and your video gives me confidence that I have the right gear.

I am fairly new to bike mechanics. I just, however, set up Advent 9-speed with drop bars this past weekend. Frankly, it was really straight-forward. Within 15 minutes, I had the thing shifting like champ. I like that. The shifters also have a nice hand feel and seem pretty solid. I'll ignore the shift cable coming out the side. I have not ridden the bike yet. It needs a tire (important, I think). But likely this weekend.

I got a bike off the internet in early 2021; it's a Gravity Trail HD with the Advent 1x9. To date it has held up pretty well. The smallest sprocket's teeth are are worn and I can only use 8 gears now. It would be real nice to have my top gear back so I should get the parts and watch some youtube videos so I can install it myself. Anyway the point of my comment is that even 8 gears works great for getting around everywhere(hills and long distance).

Amen to the 12 speed snake oil. I trashed a SRAM SX derailleur twice in the first 2000 miles on streets and gravel roads. Exceptionally good video work - an anthem for the hard-to-kill groupsets. “dainty” definitely isn’t the word I think of when it comes to my 12spd XO1 setup, but I admit I would probably never pay full price for these parts. Now they go up to 10-52t I look forward to the 10-50t stuff going on sale. Incidentally: Independent testing done by zerofrictioncycling suggests 12spd chains actually last as long (or longer) than their lower-speed counterparts. Sure you can poke holes in their methodology, but it’s maybe better than anecdotes. I welcome more competitors to this market (Advent, Box etc.), as long as they promise not to invent more hub driver standards.
@Spindatt
@Spindatt 3 года назад
Lol I’ll have words to say if there are new hub driver standards! You are right, I’m slightly harsh on 12 speed.. my GX eagle actually works pretty awesome. After the chain broke and the NX derailleur failed to the point of unserviceable.. kind of my main complaint really

I got back into cycling 2 years ago and previous to that the las bike I rode was in early 2000s when I was a teenager. I bought a mountain bike from Decathlon which was discounted at 360 euros right after the pandemic cycling boom. The thing is equipped with a microshift advent drivetrain but I honestly didn't know what that that meant and it could have been Decathlon own brand from what I knew. I rode that thing everywhere and in terms of maintenance I probably have cleaned and lubed the bike 3 or 4 times. So I got used to the way it was shifting and taught that if this was the lowest of low end bike then surely anything more expensive had to be better. So I bought a Genesis Fugio earlier this year equipped with Sram 11 speed Apex drive train. And since the whole bike was 5 times more expensive surely it had to be noticeably better in many ways right ? Disappointment ensued shortly after. Shifting feels the same when everything is in perfect working order. By that I mean that the more expensive drivetrain recquires to be spotless and is way more susceptible to make funny noises when covered with muck or isn't perfectly lubbed. The best I can say is that I got two extra gears and I honestly don't think that this makes much of a difference to a recreational use. It feels like a side grade more than anything else. You sacrifice ease of use and maintenance for a slight gain in performance which makes no sense to me given the huge price increase. It's the same thing for everything else about this new bike honestly. I like to treat myself with fancy stuff from now and to end up on a positive note I'd say it's pretty amazing what you can get for a price that cheap, but you don't know that until you compared it to more expensive stuff. And there are definitely parts worth investing money into. The most surprising to me was getting different handlebars with more sweep and decent grips. Being comfortable made me ride faster, more regularly and more confident. Also getting decent tires and going tubeless. Generally speaking I'd say having a simpler and cheaper bike allowed me to be more comfortable tinkering and doing my own maintenance which in turns allow to ride with more confidence. I'm more in tune with a bike that I maintained and modified myself than my expensive gravel bike that I have to bring to my lbs every time I need a tune up or don't have specific tools.

Thanx, nice thought process. I have a 12 sp Sram on a new bike I bought a couple of months ago. Shifting went bad because of a derailleur that developed a fatal amount of wobble after a couple of months use by a guy over 60. You should build a chain out of quick links. It’s would be heavy and expensive!
@GuyInnagorillasuit

Heavy and expensive, but imagine the convenience of being able to open the chain where you want without having to look for the quick link!
@Spindatt

lol the process of looking for the individual link can be a real pain when your chains are as dirty as mine

@@Spindatt I know the feeling. Singlespeed chains allow for my lack of maintenance tendencies to get out of control at times. Finding that single quick link aint so easy on early morning rides in the dark. Maybe I should install just one more to double my chances of finding it. Hmm.

@@Spindatt You could get a video out of waxing a chain. I tried the Oz Cycling channel's teflon/wax recipe and it worked really well at keeping my chain clean and quiet. I switched bikes about 2 months after that and haven't waxed the chain on the new bike, but I intend to do so soon - in dry weather the gravel trail do most of my riding on will blacken a chain in a ride or two.

Ive been looking at Advent and Advent X groups for months now. Still not sure I am ready to move away from Shimano. I like having the option to do so however!

@@Spindatt I'd like to. As a primarily singlespeed rider, I prefer the road-oriented, low range, cadence-priority, 2 tooth cog jumps over a majority of the cassette. I like a clutched derailleur however because all drivetrains sound clunky over rock gardens compared to singlespeed. Currently I am running a 32x21 setup on the Chumba Sendero frame, so maybe a 11-28t cassette would be fine for me with the Advent der and shifter? Seems like a downhillers cog set, but would prevent me from wanting to rack up the singlespeed to drive the 5 miles to the trailhead if I can pedal up to 25mph on the flats. Any thoughts Eric?

While I absolutely agree that it is good to see these cheaper and possibly less finicky options become available, I have to also say that the current drivetrains from Sram and Shimano are both VERY durable. I have been mountain biking for over 20 years now and have never had less drivetrain failures than in recent history. I used to wear out chains on road bike in about 1000-1500 miles and now I'm closer to 2500 miles, on the mountain side I couldnt get more than 500 miles out of a chain without it exploding in some catastrophic way, not a single one of my 11 or 12 speeds have failed. Every time I have seen a 11 or 12 speed chain fail its been to poor installation (not saying they dont fail and I know there was a supply of bad material recently)

I like Microshift, but as long as OEMs don't spec it out of the box, the fact that: 1. the derailleur may or may not with with shimano shifters 2. the shifter+derailleur may or may not work with a 11-26 cassette CS HG9 makes the upgrade path fairly expensive who's just trying to upgrade from something like Sora to Advent for the clutch derailleur and wider cassette range. That is, until something goes mechanically wrong with the Sora shifter to justify the expense of a Advent shifter set.

Less expensive, more reliable, durable and modular. Thats all we want from the bike industry. Not 1000 dollar balance bikes. They should be trying to replace cars not emulating the cost and waste. Good chat.
