A de-windowsing your life video similar to the de-google video would absolutely be a banger. I think a lot of us are more than ready to leave windows behind but dont really know where to start.

Begin with a checklist of your needs and wants as far as s/w goes. If you can forgo those apps that are not available on Linux then you're good to jump. Personally I'd buy a cheap (used) PC and put an easy-going Linux on it (Ubuntu) and transition slowly. Network all together to help. Note that if you exchange a lot of docs such as Word and Excel, you will find importing/exporting from Linux to be tedious. (Esp. the export part).

I work in healthcare, and most (all?) of the electronic medical records only have MSWindows and maybe iOS clients, so we’re an all-MS shop. And Recall would absolutely be a dealbreaker. Then there are other fields, like law and government intelligence and the military that have similar or greater data privacy concerns, and are currently 😢dominated by MSWindows. There’s no way that MS keeps its enterprise marketshare without a version of Windows 12 that doesn’t just limit Recall, but simply doesn’t include it at all. Or at least a version that they manage to _convince_ healthcare/government/corporate customers doesn’t include it. Now, whether Recall is _really_ removed from that version, and whether regular folks can get their hands on that version, who knows? But I can’t imagine it won’t exist. To be clear, this is no defense of MS-haven’t used their software voluntarily since…well, ever, actually, because I just don’t trust them. Don’t trust their intentions, don’t trust their software’s reliability, don’t trust their data practices, don’t trust their promises. And every time I think “it’s been a while since they screwed us over or _really_ screwed up-maybe I’m judging them on old data and they’ve changed” they do something like this. But despite their track record and my cynicism, I can’t imagine they won’t make Recall _truly_ optional for business and government customers. Probably charge a hefty premium to _not_ include it.

Privacy went out the window a long time ago. They watch us like cattle now. We all willingly bought into it, the moment we adopted Facebook's "check-in" (or as I call it, "Come rob me") feature, and social media (past MySpace) in general, to where we no longer even own our own photos/ media. Now that everyone in the world is an influencer now too your life and opinions are out there even more so now, and so now you're watched by everybody more. Our smart phones are a privacy nightmare: I can talk to my wife about bicycling and see ads about bicycles almost immediately. They may as well just put cameras in our window, Truman Show style. Actually it's scary how much that movie became true...but then again? The same can be said about Idiocracy. It's all by design. Little-by-little, they test the waters, push a new concerning feature, until people are just born into a world where they are constantly monitored and it's normal.
@JohnCastleSmokeless
@JohnCastleSmokeless 29 дней назад
Bear in mind a few other things: 1. OneDrive. Sure, those 'snapshots' will be stored locally -- but if they're synced via OneDrive, _locally won't be the ONLY place they're stored._ 2. Today's, 'Optional feature' is next year's 'integral to the OS' framework -- meaning that, just like you can't safely excise Edge today, you won't be able to safely disable or excise Recall tomorrow.
@PhoenixClank

Now you see they only work on special "Copilot Plus" computers, if they wanted it to be for data collection they would've made it more widespread, the two people who own one of those special computers aren't going to earn Microsoft _anything_, the money is large masses of people The goal is most likely to get people to buy "Copilot Plus PCs", and also it's not that easily usable data (will probably not be an issue in the future though) The biggest issue is it taking a picture of your bank information and stuff like that

It's going to happen to someone prominent, they won't have known it was there and the device will end up a at repair shop (sound familiar) or for sale but someone forgot to reformat or didn't do it properly and it won't take long for someone to figure out who used to own it. The fallout will make the icloud fappening thing look tame and it won't just be pics, it'll be highly compromising PII typed into text fields and viewed in PDFs/emails. Only a completely reprobate and megalomaniacal organization would even attempt something so obviously deranged. I remember years ago Top Gear did a segment where they talked about a scandal in the British news about a car formerly belonging to one of the royals being sold at auction, apparently the person who bought it found out who owned it due to the GPS memory. It was a bit silly because the vast majority of the places in there were well known to be inhabited by/associated with the British royal family, but it did start a public conversation as GPSs were just starting to come preinstalled in cars at the time. Now take that rather minor privacy exposure and imagine how crazy it'll be when someone ends up with a device with YEARS of intimately personal computer use history neatly organized and annotated for easy searching that was owned by a famous person...

Worst part is if you're even remotely advanced, all these AI features are useless. Recall? How you about you organize your files and bookmarks? Copilot opening windows? Well on Linux I can automate all kinds of things, tile windows in complex ways and manage lots of applications with my keyboard much much quicker than AI can. The people who don't know how to do that would realistically almost never need it in the first place. So yeah Copilot PC and AI in general are overhyped and as you see privacy also goes out the window. Even if they say it's local (the screenshots), how am I supposed to believe that?
@thomrl
@thomrl 29 дней назад
@@ent2220 I like that you put the screenshots in parentheses, cause I've been thinking about this.. As far as I know they only say it's the snapshots being stored and analysed locally. But they are not saying anything about the data the AI will put out during or from the analysing of the snapshots. That totally leaves room for them to get a crazy bunch of data about what has been snapshotted, and still technically not having lied about anything.
@ohwhen7775
@ohwhen7775 28 дней назад
@@thomrl And to any degree that what's being proposed here is true, that the AI is learning what its capturing and that this data is getting back to humans to interpret and act on somehow, then (to me at least) it poses some serious questions about the future of humanity, like sorry to give my tin foil hat away but again to any degree all of this will happen, I guess the question is "why", what is it _trying_ to achieve exactly. I mean "ads" is one thing and I could care less tbh, I'm more concerned about either rando's getting my info or if some crazy plan is in order once enough info data is gathered (by anyone at that, we're getting into Black Mirror S3 EP6 territory here). Because I'm someone who will claim to have "nothing to hide", you're not gonna find dodgy search history here, nothing illegal. Mostly just some mildly controversial opinions on current affairs at worst. The mind can go wild with theories here.

I read every EULA, do some research etc. We have a lot of big companies as partners and their ITsec is paranoid when it comes to working with sub-contractors such as us, but they use software breaking every NDA (e.g. 3rd party online editors, MS apps with EULA allowing MS to do anything with the content). Whenever you wanna play a game on another launcher (eg. gta5 from the rockstar launcher directly, cuz that is indeed a storefront), my experience was playing it with major graphical issues and ~20FPS via Lutris. B: There are several issues in a lot of popular Desktop Environments regarding Multiple Monitors. IDK exactly how linux handles this, but in my case 99% of the time the game would open up on any random monitor, but not on my main one, with no possibility of even changing it ingame (well i could change it, but it doesnt do anything). 16:43 - This is EXACTLY why we need special consumer protection regulation for OPERATING SYSTEMS. They aren't just a run-of-the-mill application. Any new feature needs to be CLEARLY spelled out, and any data collection/aggregation needs to be OPT IN vs opt-out, and NO SETTING can EVER be reverted unless a basic worded question clearly explaining/asking in a non-obvious way, and that question can be "cancelled/ignored" easily and the default behavior is OPT OUT. Then we need to ban ads, telemetry (anything beyond basic reporting of bugs, popularity of core os features, or UX only focused tracking -- but that needs to be opt out by default).
