Great job explaining these topics on a high level overview. You mentioned that you liked to learn some things in the comments…. One of the things I wanted to point out for you is about what you said at 44:10 that “RNAV approaches usually don’t provide vertical information.” You can tell which RNAV approaches will or will not give you vertical guidance depending on the type of RNAV approach. If you look in the minimums section below the profile view at the bottom of the chart, if it has “LPV” or “LNAV/VNAV” you will have vertical guidance. LP or LNAV will not have vertical guidance. You had mentioned in your video that you did not know what MDA(H) was compared to DA(H). This also comes into play determining an approach with vertical guidance versus one without. DA(H) is the minimum “Decision Altitude (Height)” for an approach that has vertical guidance, where you need to land or go missed approach when you meet this altitude. A MDA(H) is a “Minimum Descent Altitude (Height)” that you descend to on an approach without vertical guidance. This applies to both RNAV approaches like LNAV, as well as ILS/LOC approaches when the glide slope is out. You are using the Localizer only and descending to a MDA(H) as opposed to a DA(H) when the glide slope is available. It is usually higher than a DA(H), and you may be flying at the MDA(H) for a little while before you see the runway in a real IFR approach. With an MDA(H) you go missed approach once you hit the MAP (Missed Approach Point) designated by the “M” on the profile view of the approach chart. Google Search “Types of RNAV approaches” for more info.

Hi Overkill, new to your channel but really liking it! I just upgraded from a Rift S, to the HP G2. I really need to learn how to use these tools like navigraph, and sim brief! I've been aware of them for quite awhile but just recently was able to get back to simming after a long break. On to the video now!

In your ofp setup in simbrief the reason you always have extra fuel is because you have reserve fuel of 30 minutes selected on the right side in selections. In the real world, under an IFR flight plan, you would need 45 minutes of reserve fuel. This is to plan for bad weather or a problem at your destination, where you would need to fly to an alternate, shoot an approach, and then still have enough fuel to fly for 45 minutes.

Very informative tutorial. What do you do when your approach and arrival don't connect but have a dotted line? The plane won't follow the dotted line on autopilot. I am trying to land at KMCO with a GRINCH4 arrival to ILS36R with the transition TRAMP. Between GRINCH4 and TRAMP is a dotted line. How do you connect in the FMC? Thanks

STAR's are usually named for something the area you are flying to is famous for or is known for..Memphis...BBQ, San Diego-zoo, etc. Rnav also controls you vertically as does the ILS. only on a Glidepath, not glideslope, but it is the same thing

Thanks for the great tutorial. I am looking to subscribe to Navigraph. One question I have is when I subscribe and login will it automatically update my MSFS database with the latest Airac data or do I need to do something specific. Also does the 28 day update cycle happen automatically or??? Thanks, Steve

I open World Map in game and make a simple GPS route in between departure and arrival airport i like to fly, then the game will tell me which active runways it will use, then I start to create my flight plan outside the sim and setup my plan in FMS or Garmin when I'm in the game.
