Lifecam CLEARLY beats the other one in audio quality.. Much better treble / high frequency response than C920 IMHO. Logitech sound dull and 'overfiltered' which is weird because the mic placement is much better with Logitech.

+Zsavage1 it all really depends on your needs tbh. I have a $200+ professional condenser mic connected to my PC so yeah I'd definitely pick the Logitech. But for people who don't have external mics the Microsoft may make total sense if they value sound over picture quality.

great video, exactly 100% what I needed to make my decision. had the Microsoft cam for about 8 months now and the autofocus is a big downpoint I can tell. gonna try the Logitech next! thanks for your efforts

I tested both cams lately and also made a video about it. However, the Microsoft LifeCam Studio supplies a better video and audio quality. The microphone of the Logitech HD Pro C920 is very weak.

Except in image quality, auto-focus, still photo quality, and on-the-fly compression. You know, the things important to webcams.

Tommynnd Well, you probably just have a terrible headset then. I prefer using my Yeti for recording audio, but when I'm doing video conferences I typically use my headset. Both of my microphones outperforms the 920's (and that of the Lifecam) microphone noticeably.

I need to buy a webcam but I'm not sure which one as not a single one of them satisfies me in terms of quality under $80. I'm considering to use a smartphone Samsung S4 as webcam and videocam for youtube videos, but I'm not sure whether if the final result would be better than using a webcam. Any idea anyone?

The picture clarity looks cleaner from the LC Studio. Compare the light reflection on the forehead at 1:25, and the hairs on the tash. It also sound clearer in the LC Studio, it's just that it's so sensitive that it picks up the reverb of the room. Maybe the sound can be turned down.

Did you mix up the captioning there? You say the Logitech has the sharper image, but that one is obviously a lot more blurry. Just look at the keyboard in the back. The Microsoft actually looks like 1080 res while the Logitech looks like 720 or overcompressed.

Agree with the review apart from the audio. The c920's audio was muddy and quite bad. The Lifecam had way better clarity and your voice was more natural. This probably has something to do with how the c920 cuts out background noise. Question is, can this be turned off?

*i own both of these and there is a difference in the audio when you have them mounted in a confined space like a corner unit desk, when in google hangouts i get feedback from the stereo microphones on the logitech, however i don't on the life cam studio i do have an issue with the auto focus on the life cam but you can adjust it where the camera is focused and go into the settings and turn off auto focus and not have a problem any more. the logitech didn't have that problem to begin with so you are kind of spot on with that aspect*

+GoDxism Quite the late reply, but I'm pretty sure he meant the difference between ''8 megapixel'' and ''1920x1080'' in the settings for taking pictures (no difference in quality or file size?)... I don't have the webcam myself, nor have I ever seen the software but that's how I understood it :P

At first this is what I thought too, although he probably meant that he didn't know what pixel ratio an 8MP image would be (nearly 4K equivalent) compared to 1080p which is roughly 2MP.

I think that it would be cool with a software battle! Maybe Moutain Lion vs Windows 8? A lot of people is deciding which computer to buy, based on the OS. Or PS3 Super Slim vs Xbox 360 Elite? HBO vs Netflix would be awesome as well ! Happy New Year Soldier! :)

Thank you sooo much for this video. This is great! I bought the C920 a few months ago, and was worried that the Lifecam may have been a better option, but this video shows otherwise. If you ever have a chance, I'd love for you to comparison of different webcam software products as I am attempting to start a YT channel, and would love to do this right! Thank you again!

if the application for the logtech doesn't start you'll just have to go to the site to download it, from there you can adjust the camera settings and video.

I still have my LifeCam Studio, 9 years later, and it's still better than many common webcams out there. And it does record 1080p as well, guess it was just a matter of software settings and updates.

Because the Mac's cam shoot's in 720p, not the high industry standard 1080p which many hope to have, also it's built into the actually computer which isn't really that practical, you can mount it on a tripod or anything. I am only talking about people who record videos such as reviews though, so if it's just skype or something then it is fine, all you'd really want is a new mic. That's why you'd get a separate cam. THINK.

Great video, thanks! May I suggest you some positive criticism, if you don't mind? I am a second English speaker and lived 11 years in the UK. Although I have very good command of the language, it was hard to understand everything as you speak so fast! :) I understand it's to keep it energetic, but I am sure you could afford to slow down a tiny bit and keep the up beat so your videos can be of help to people from other countries without the need of so much concentration. I hope you don't mind the suggestion. Again, many thanks. This help me to decide which camera to buy!

This was very useful. However you could record 1080p with the LifeCam, but you need the right software. Microsoft don't want your video to be corrupt, so what it does is limiting you to record at 1080p unless you have a killer computer...

Got the lifecam studio for like 2 years now. If you manual use focus when your streaming, its a verry nice webcam. It works verry great in low light. The C920 tend to be more grainier in low light conditions then the lifecam studio.

Great review THANKS - but consider camera choice only after you know which software likes it. I live in Camtasia - use it all the time. Unfortunately after buying the Logitech - I learned Camtasia doesn't work with it. Just got off phone with Camtasia Tech Support - they recommend the Lifecam Studio which works with Camtasia. So check forums to see if what you buy - will work with what you use...

Yes you can use whatever microphone you like with the Logitech, and probably the Microsoft. There's an option in logotech's recording software to select a microphone

I am leaning to C920. But Lifecam does sound better (the voice is more "in focus") to me and its color of the still picture is more saturated and vivid (comparing the ones in which the host is holding a green droid).

The audio for both was pretty bad. The Lifecam picked up a lot of background noise you wouldn't want but the Logitech sounded "muffled". I think the Logitech paired with a better mic, like a Blue Microphone (like a Snowball), would pretty much be a solid setup for anyone.

I am not sure why the C920 beat the Lifecam in audio. The audio sounds WAY clearer and crisper with the Lifecam. I own both products myself and can easily hear the difference. I do agree with the video quality, C920 beats the Lifecam. I personally use a Samson G Track Pro with the C920 and get awesome sound. Thanks for the comparison video.

You can turn off the auto focus on the Microsoft cam. Go to where you see the icon at the bottom of your screen after bringing up the cam, click on it, and it will have a button that says Properties. Click on that and it will bring you to the cam settings. One of them is Focus. It is Auto by default. Adjust the focus to whatever you like and uncheck that autofocus box and you will NOT need to worry about the cam becoming fuzzy and trying to figure out what to focus on!

+Joe Smith when unchecking the box for auto focus, you are NOT adjusting the cam or focus EVER. That is the point of turning it off AFTER going into the properties and adjusting it to the focus you desire. The Microsoft cam loves to do that auto focusing and at times can be what seems like STUCK in fuzzy mode while it is trying to "find" what to focus on - that is why I unchecked that box, set it to what I wanted the focus to be and never touch it again. You would have to do this though each time you open up the cam software though as it does not remember this setting and by default will want to be on auto focus.

The Microsoft LifeCam Studio is a big win because it's the ONLY 1080P HD WebCam on the market, still to this day, that lets you adjust the exposure manually, as well as all the other adjustments that aren't fake like the contrast and brightness on the Logitech controls. You can adjust the camera to any type of lighting you want and it will stay that way. You simply can't do that on a Logitech. If the Logitech camera allowed for manual controls, particularly for the exposure and a REAL contrast and brightness, it would be a win for sure.

i would chose the c920 however I would have to get a blue yeti or snowball mic for better audio quality. I would like to see a comparison between Apple's Thunderbolt display vs a comparable monitor.

c920 removes more noise but that also removed the higher frequencies. You could however compensate with an equalizer.

I was planning on buying a lifecam and borrowed it from a friend for a couple of days. The auto focus is really sucky as this video mentioned. I have a headset so idc about the mic quality it will be the C920 for me! Good review keep up the good work.

In my country, Microsoft LifeCam is 1/4 more expensive than Logitech C920. Still, the frame rate and autofocus problems add even more problems. Has it got better after the time you made this review?

I bought the Logitech C920 and I don't understand why you can't use a mirrored image in the higher video qualities such as 1080p? You only can in small or medium resolutions. Is it at all possible to use it in HD?
