Larian Studios' CEO explained it best in his GDC speech. These big companies keep losing oceans of talent, institutional knowledge and experience each time they feel like laying off tons of developers to earn an extra penny. Its a losing strategy and everybody has to pay except the ones actually responsible for their horrendous decisions
The same company and ceo who sold their souls to HASBRO MATTEL and DEI agenda to get money to produce BG3 is talking bulls about others? Hold my beer [maybe hold MY BEAR?]r: 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣... My gosh Larian CEO is the most hypocritical being in the gamer world!
The industry is in a great place, actually. Amazing indie games, amazing single player games, amazing mp/live service games.... but that will change if a company like Microsoft is allowed to monopolize it.
There’s a reason why game devs didn’t want to put their games on Game Pass. They know it’s not financially sustainable. It was a bad idea from the start and gamers don’t want to admit it.
I mean I might be in the minority but I actually really liked game pass when I had it. I never would have played celeste, Ori, or hollow knight which are some of mt favorite games I’ve ever played. After I moved to pc I bought them cuz I wanted to replay them. I also played doom eternal, halo infinite, Minecraft’s dungeons which are games that I never really want to playa again but I’m glad that I did
That's the reason why I don't want it, if it can be appealing at first I know that eventually game pass is going to be way more expensive, and turn like Netflix by making the borriest content ever created just to target a larger audience, terrible idea
@@DownBelowNagrindNo. Dishonored 1 started in Austin with Rafael Colantonio and Harvey Smith. It was the pillar of the game/level design, while Lyon was the pillar of the art direction. Then Smith moved to Lyon, and that's where Dishonored 2 was made while Austin was building Prey with Colantonio at its head.
Hearing “Not Like Us” in the vid gave me a culture shellshock I never thought I’d have. I’d ask if you’re pro Kdot or Drake, but then I remember you’re a commentary youtuber, not a minecraft youtuber
@@GDKF0238 If you have bad taste just say that. Section80, Good kid maad city, To Pimp a Butterfly, and Damn are all classic albums. Mr Morale was a therapy album so I understand why people don't like it, but it's still objectively good. Drake's best album was Take Care, and he didn't even write most of the songs on the album.
Rocksteady shouldn't be included in the list of studios who were forced to go live service, because they wanted to make that game, and approached Warner Bros. with the idea of making a live service multiplayer game. It sucked, but they weren't forced by Big Business to make a game no one but shareholders wanted. They took their shot and shot themselves in the foot. No one but Rocksteady is to blame for that.
@bearpoop720 because 343 games make alot of money Not a single Tango Gameworks game or Arkane Austin game sold well (less than 5m copies sold per game) Halo comparatively almost always sell over 5M copies and upwards of 10M+ Halo also grew gamepass subs Maybe if TEW 1 & 2 didnt barely sell around 2m copies each & HiFi Rush didn't sell a measly 2-3M copies Tango wouldn't have been shut down
The whole good guy Microsoft shtick wasn't for the customers. It was for the Activision acquisition deal. Them looking very consumer friendly definitely helped tipped the scales in their favor during that acquisition. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if it came out that they were actively sabotaging their own games to improve their chances. Edit: with Activision they don't need to make good games. People give that company billions for trash. That and wow is coming back to China so it is effectively an infinite money glitch (I didn't even mention all the mobile games they get from King).
Yeah of course it isn't for the customers. Nothing is. The reason they did it is completely wrong too. They realized that they make more money by selling games than consoles, so they just gave them away. Sony and Nintendo are too stuck up to give away games, so Microsoft is just labelled as the nice guy.
They closed the studios but have the rights to the IP’s. They can now fold those into whatever dev company they want to make and pay some cheap contractors to put out.
@@bellissimo4520 agreed, and why I don’t get attached to an IP. And judge the content on its own merits. Branding is stupid and should not be what consumers follow. There is wayyy to much easy to access information to be blind buyer like we were in the 90’s. Take the 10 minutes look up what you are about to purchase. And stop buying things off of the work a previous team did.
The main good thing microsoft has done lately has been bringing their games to PC. I can't think of anything else, I am pissed about the closure of Tango Gameworks cause Hi Fi Rush was incredible.
hi fi rush was a very safe game though, like it was trying so hard to not offend anyone, even the main character has like this generic style you come up with in 3 seconds.
@@MGrey-qb5xz To me it was the best character action game I have enjoyed since Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. I don't play games based on if they're "safe" or not, I play them based on if they're fun or not. Sometimes this results in me playing games that aren't "safe", sometimes it does. No offense but a critique of the art style doesn't hold water to me when it's animated very well and the game itself is really enjoyable and hype.
I think not closing most of the Xbox division and game pass is a nice thing for the 20 million plus people out there on either side of that. Considering this whole thing is basically pocket change for a three trillion dollar corpo, they could have viewed this whole venture as a complete waste of time at any point and pulled the plug like google did with Stadia.
Exactly, Microsoft is trash, they always ruin the games they buy, also Sony and Nintendo makes games with amazing graphics and story lines, Microsoft never makes anything good lol. the only reason i need pc for gaming more
To be fair, consoles have been known to be financial losses for the company that sells them, but it is the games that make the profit, which makes gamepass even worse as they effectively remove most potential profit from consoles. The best thing Microsoft could do is use the fact they own windows and create their own game seller and launcher pre installed.
You forgot to consider the fact Sony and Nintendo also have proprietary media platforms Sony has their latest Blu-ray disc's and Nintendo has their proprietary cartridges Sony owning blu-ray has always f*cked over Microsoft since the Xbox 360 when it comes to physical media
Honestly most of gaming has felt like a droute for the past 10 years, I never realized how spoiled I was growing up, it was golden from n64 to xbox 360. Then it quickly dried up around 2014-2015
DoubleFine was able to FINALLY make Psychonauts 2, partly because of Xbox's acquisition of them - but now this entire situation with Tango has me worried for their future, and i REALLY dont wanna see my favorite studio get shut down for stupid reasons
Microsoft is not in the best of times right now. People hated their decisions of the Xbox brand, and Windows 11 is being used by mostly no one right now.
Starfield killed AAA gaming for me. Last game I will ever preorder. I knew it was a bad idea, I’d heard the grumblings and rumors that it was bad before release. I just really, really wanted to be proven wrong. You can also buy 3-10 indie games for the price of one AAA and get more enjoyable gameplay hours out of them even if they’re each pretty short lol.
Remember when the OG Xbox was treated as alien technology, and everyone(including children for the latter) played Halo Reach and Call of Duty during the Xbox 360 era? That was back when we gave a shit about Microsoft in the game industry. Two bad signs for their downfall was the infamous Red Ring of Death error for the Xbox 360 and the disdained Xbox One showcase at E3 2013, then it got worse from there with the console's launch. Also, fuck Microsoft for killing Tango Gameworks after Hi-Fi Rush was both a commercial and critical success one year later. Phil Spencer doesn't care about developers that make good games, he and Microsoft only care about money, and now I'm genuinely concerned for Rare and to a lesser extent Activision-Blizzard... If the latter had the absolute worst downfall out of a third-party developer(even originating from the PC market now considered 'retro' with Bethesda, which were both acquired by Microsoft).
The only thing I disagree with is the watchdogs take. Watch dogs 1 was fun. It wasn't perfect but it was good. I did not enjoy watch dogs 2. Good thing I got it for free, too.
An easier and most likely solution instead of just "make better games" would be cuts on the higher ups salaries and a change in the management focus from making shareholder happy. Actually this is less likely to ever happen.
"But despite being enjoyed and likeable, the studio has now been closed" 5:17 For reasons my brain won't understand, historically that's the default. So that should be "because" instead of "despite" I guess.
Microsoft suddenly understood that Activision- Blizzard deal was a disaster. And now will reverse this disaster on us. Phil Spencer almost certainly will lose it position.
Microsoft's idea to get more Game Pass subs was to try getting the service on Nintendo and PlayStation and they both told Microsoft to screw off. Microsoft so desperate to get Xbox relevant in Japan rather than giving up on Japan, they haven't moved on from trying to acquire Nintendo after being laughed at 2 decades ago prompting them to buy Rare, thinking that they could damage Nintendo's since Rare wouldn't be making games for Nintendo and they'd get Donkey Kong, which neither happened. Do you think Nintendo would be better being owned by Microsoft after news came out that Microsoft 4 closed studios? Despite Nintendo's console being underpowered the Xbox is in 3rd place, and completely irrelevant in Japan.
Tango Gameworks being shut down genuinely broke my heart. Hi-fi Rush was one of the best games I’ve played in my entire life. Now i don’t know what will happen to the Hi-fi Rush IP
Was kinda hoping that Game Pass was going to fuel a boom in the AA games coming out.. Giving us more Palworld, Helldivers sized games to enjoy doesn't seem the case so far. Tango could have been in that AA pocket nicely and absolutely crushed it.. But no, we are clearly not allowed nice things.
Tangos games were made with AAA budgets but barely made AA level profits and most AA games barely break even in terms of revenue so you can imagine the price to sales ratio for their games
@@P_D-px6iv xbox need some quantity right now. And quality, but if we can't get that.. quantity will do. They want to be the netflix of gaming, if there is only 1 show on netflix people like.. it's not going to convince people to stick around. If there is a number of interesting things, people will try out lots of different things. It's the buffet vs restaurant analogy. At a buffet you don't need amazing dishes. You need lots of variety and things to be 'pretty good' Helldivers 2 is a great example. A few maps that are not crazy over designed, not much variety, but the gameplay loop is awesome and really enjoyable. No campaign, no endgame, no 'but what's next' questions.. Just fun drop in shoot things and try to get out alive. If xbox can have a number of these kinds of game. Then they'll be doing pretty good. Even sea of thieves fits this mould.
@@P_D-px6iv if tango games don't sell that's on MS for handicapping them by strapping them to a dying subscription service instead of letting them be sold
what's crazy is before all this, I was actually considering getting an xbox as my next console. I love Arkane and Obsidian, and probably would have gotten the console to be able to keep playing their games. Now? no way. What guarantee is there that either studio is going to be around three years from now?
In the outro, I heard Tyler, the Creator and I was surprised Skipper threw Sorry, Not Sorry in the video despite 96.7% songs being from Kendrick Lamar.
I can’t agree on Sony having first party games that are worth playing. As mediocre as Starfield was, I lost interest in spider man and GOW 2018 wayyyy faster than Starfield. If you wanna watch a movie while kinda playing a game you can do that with hellblade 2 for 5-10$ a month (just order it off CDkeys) rather than paying $70 on PS5 to play yet another boring ass Uncharted, whiny Kratos in the new GOW, and don’t even get me started on the most recent spider man. If I had my pick of Wastelad 3, Clockwork Revolution, Starfield, Lamplighters League, plus something like The Show where it’s $70 on PS5, I’ll take the MS exclusives over Sony any day… and that’s not even counting Avowed and Outer Worlds which was also better than anything Sony has made since last of us part 1. MS spent a shit ton purchasing Harebrained, InXile, Obsidian, BGS, along with many others, and at least. For cRPG fans Gamepass is completely worth it.
What baffles my mind is how a few months ago, we all believed Xbox was going to stop making Consoles for a week after they were making some games go Multiplatform. When they said "No, we're not going out of business", you'd think they wouldn't do something to make them look stupid after spending $70 Billion on Studios
I love that you used so many Kendrick tracks in this video, you're a real one. Anywho, the Xbox 360 days are over boys. Microsoft is literally killing itself with Game Pass and everyone was saying it. "But it's such a good value for money!" Yeah, it was. Until it wasn't. Now studios are closing and nearly every game has been mediocre besides Hi-Fi Rush and Forza. I'm starting to hate Microsoft so much as a whole that I learned Linux just to get off of Windows, and I am teaching all of my friends how to use it too. Oh and my favorite Xbox game is probably Halo 2. I haven't liked a single Xbox exclusive since that.
Exclusives aren't a strong argument. Sure, some exclusives might make you buy a specific console if you really want to play that game, but it's not the main reason people buy consoles. When I was growing up, exclusives didn't matter to me and my friends. We just got whatever our other friends had so we could play together. That's why we all got PlayStations. My friend had one, I got one, and the rest of our friends did too. PlayStation is also putting its "exclusives" on PC. I think what's happening is that consoles in general aren't doing as well as they did a decade ago. PCs have become a lot more popular since 2014. Xbox also has a bad reputation after the Xbox One launch fiasco. Combine that with incompetent leadership, and you've got a struggling company like Xbox.
PS4 didn't outsell PS2, you're completely right. Combined that actually many of the younger generation are playing games on their Iphones instead of consoles or PCs and that means the whole industry is stagnating and not really growing like it was 15 years ago.
always feels good to see appreciation for Gears.. Absolutely loved and still do love the series, it's neuron activation whenever I hear it said these days
This guy is a professional Halo Infinite hater (I kinda respect it). My favorite Xbox games? Well I actually really like Infinite, but my favorite has got to be Hi-Fi Rush. Incredible experience.
Microsoft has done wonders for maintaining and even revitalizing old established titles like age of Empiers and Warcraft.... could give a shit about modern generation of games because there nothing more than cash grabs
kendrick made all his disstracks against drake copyright free, metro boomin made his beat free, so reaction channels and people who are afraid of cc can still use their music against drake with no trouble of a boogeymen taking a cut or all of it
Its crazy how they changed, phil spencer reallyoutlived his usefulness when he made the claim that exclusives dont sell consoles now we see microsoft buying other studios looks like a mistake
Also no doubt this is coming from dropping $70 billion on Activision-Blizzard, and Bobby getting a nice $400 million parachute. GamePass isnt going to foot that ridiculous bill
The idea, in theory, is that the more the gaming market expands, the more games there should be coming out because companies and their studios have more money to work on more projects at one time. Yet, confusingly, these executives who are supposed to understand supply and demand, decide they should be producing less games, that each cost way more money to make, and way more money to buy? It's not just putting all your eggs in one basket. The basket is overflowing and now there's salmonella all over the floor.
Something this video didnt cover but i think should be talked about is the future of gamepass. Because right now its a great deal and i see people be way too nice to microsoft because of it, but as stated microsoft is a business. Gamepass is only so great right now because its an investment. Microsoft is gonna keep buying and buying gaming companies because ITS LIKE 20000 TIMES THE SIZE OF SONY LOOK IT UP THIS IS REAL! And if we keep supporting this were personally helping them create a monopoly, YIPPEE!
It sucks we keep seeing such "safe" subpar games. It takes a handful of yrs for each game to get released nowadays. We're lucky if 2 decent games are released on consoles each year. Why are most games lacking quality, depth & creativity to the games overall fun factor? Games from the late 90's early 00's possessed more depth to their gameplay mechanics and they were dealing with hardware limitations.. Even tho games take a handful of years nowadays to come out; We are genuinely seeing the most paper thin quality to overall game quality..? Also these paper thin games are costing ABSURD amounts of money. Taking up stupid amounts of memory storage space. For What? It's so messed up we are dealing with this depressing chapter in modern gaming.. It's very demotivating.. Why can't we just embrace the approach and design we had during the PS2 era or the 360 era? I took so much for granted.. I was a dumb teenager tho and had no clue.. I just loved gaming and never could have guessed gaming would have gotten to this point even tho technology and hardware capabilities have advanced so far...
can you perhaps do a video about how animation made by youtubers are far more better then animation made by animation studios from Hollywood for exemple Disney, Dreamworks and Warner Bros. If you want to make that or if you are interested by it
At the very least all the creatively bankrupt studios have lead to their creative devs leaving and creating their own studios There’s quite a few games that are looking promising from ex-Bethesda devs. There’s a studio made up entirely of ex-devs from BioWare, Bethesda and a few others There’s at least hope that the devs that go away can make games that really show their talent and passion
I am probably going to upgrade to a PS5 of some breed now, as more games are becoming current gen only so it makes sense from angle...But also because PS has exclusive games on current gen ie Helldivers 2 and Demon Souls Remake for example. Why would I want an Xbox when everything will just come to PC?
One, it's been reported the Arkanie execs wanted the game and kept pushing with bad direction. More than 70% of the original team was gone by the time redfall launched, so that studio was already dead and a shell of it's former self. Mixing in poor leadership with very green team, I'm not sure how much there is to save. These corporations are chasing growth and it's gross but that studio kinda had the writing on the wall. Two, Sony doesn't own Arrowhead. I swear gamers are becoming more reactionary without even knowing shit about the industry they claim to love.
