You know how most RU-vidrs talk about how terrible their old videos were? Well when Dave Lee gets over a million subs, he's gonna look back and say, "Nope, my videos were still amazing back then."

+Justin Keathley Well yeah but he benefited from those other big youtubers though. Most big name youtubers started back in the earlier days of youtube when there was no other profession like it, no standard for good lighting, or fancy cameras and had to learn from their. Because he started later, he was able to watch their videos and learn from it.

StrickenWithFear That's a good point, and I agree. But I still think that it's incredible that none of his videos ever felt like he was figuring things out. He just hit the ground running.

So many people are hung up on the hinge and the gap. I think the whole thing is beautiful to look at. But I'm an engineer, my opinion is probably clouded by my appreciation for the design. Its sleek and unique, I think looks wise its great. We'll see about the gap getting stuff stuck in it but I like how it looks.
@USN1985dos
@USN1985dos 8 лет назад
+MCBackDraft1 Unique, sure, but it also seems like a mistake. When something closes, it should actually close, not leave the keyboard unprotected. Especially not when it's going to be put in bags and such where smaller objects could get between the keyboard and screen and damage both. I personally would've been willing to buy the Surface Book, but the hinge was the factor that stopped me. I want a quality Windows laptop, and this seemed to promise to be just that. But I want a laptop to actually close like a laptop. Hopefully they'll develop a dedicated computer in the near-future. Until then, I'll keep using MacBook Pros.
@butimnotagamer
@butimnotagamer 8 лет назад
+USN1985dos I mean are you just going to throw it in your backpack without a case?
@TMJ32
@TMJ32 8 лет назад
The hinge is polarizing for sure. Some people like it, some people are indifferent to it and some people hate it. The engineering balance in this thing is striking, and I think Microsoft did a fantastic job choosing what's important. At the end of the day, it's obvious that Microsoft got stuck with the gap, they didn't intentionally put it there. To balance the weight they did what they had to do with the hinge extending the footprint of the device. That meant it couldn't close flat but it improved the stability of the device and the experience of using the device. Like I said, as far as aesthetics go, in my subjective opinion the thing is beautiful. As a practical matter, I know that I will have to be conscious how I pack it when I'm travelling. It's a non issue for me.

BenTheLeo I carry a satchel, but yeah, same concept. I've been doing that with MacBooks for years with no issues. Why should I suddenly have to buy a case just because I switch to Windows?

Also, what Microsoft meant to do is: Surface Book: Laptop that can replace your tablet. This one is a laptop first and foremost. Surface Pro: Tablet that can replace your laptop. This one is a tablet first and foremost.

WellDoneTurner Yeah. If you need a tablet that functions as a laptop when you need it, Surface Pro. If you need a laptop that functions as a tablet when you need it, Surface Book. Or if you just want some really nice cutting edge devices.

+Mike M exactly, microsoft says it intends for the book to be used in an 80-20 ratio laptop to tablet. laptop for work, tablet when you need it
@jeremychristian5409
@jeremychristian5409 8 лет назад
Nah, that sounds too gimmicky for me to swallow. Mainly since both work as tablet and laptop just fine. I'd rather see it as two tablet-laptop hybrids of different classes. Which to choose is based on the specs-budget consideration i.e. Even if I only look for a tablet but spending 2000$ is not a big deal for me, I would take the Book. Of course I don't have that kind of money, and even though I'd prefer a full laptop, the Pro 4 is still a decent option for me since it's much more affordable and can handle being a laptop just fine.

@phillipseiffert
@phillipseiffert 8 лет назад
+MisterFuturtastic How can you consider such a design flaw as "cool"?
@MisterFuturtastic
@MisterFuturtastic 8 лет назад
+Phillip Seiffert What makes you think it's a flaw? That's what I think people are assuming and it's not reality. I think it was one of the major points of the design. If they didn't want that I think it would have been easy to not do it. The purpose is because it's meant to elevate the angle of the table AND to keep the keys from touching the screen. Otherwise they would have had to make some mechanism to raise it which would have been clunky. Why do you think it's a flaw? Just because of dust? Does would be an issue regardless... you don't want dust in your ports or vents on the outside anyway...
@phillipseiffert
@phillipseiffert 8 лет назад
+MisterFuturtastic You may have not seen it but the fact that the hinge elevates the device leads to that the device has a lack of grip because it's not standing on the rubber feet any more. How does that provide a value to the user? Furthermore the hinge delivers that huge gap, which I don't understand how you can think it's something special. Yes, it is an extraordinary part of the device and thus a major part of its design. But the fact that it is inviting dust to chill inside even when closed is a simple no-go. You either never had a dusty laptop or just over-hype the SBs design. I don't understand your point with prevent the keys from touching the screen. There are other ways to prevent that, e.g. small rubber circle around the display (MacBook). Clearly, the hinge's design was more important here than its functionality. What is basically defined as a design flaw. However, I think the device is pretty and yes, with that hinge also extraordinary.
@MisterFuturtastic
@MisterFuturtastic 8 лет назад
+Phillip Seiffert "not standing on the rubber feet any more. How does that provide a value to the user?" I haven't seen this I will have to look into it. But that seems an easy thing to fix in different ways and isn't an inherent problem with the design concept. "Furthermore the hinge delivers that huge gap, which I don't understand how you can think it's something special. Yes, it is an extraordinary part of the device and thus a major part of its design. But the fact that it is inviting dust to chill inside even when closed is a simple no-go." - This is also something I find to be an easy solution... I also think it's a small price to pay for such an elegant, usable and cool device. "You either never had a dusty laptop or just over-hype the SBs design." I see this as something else.. people who love Macs finding excuses why Apple didn't think of it first. To me if dust is such a big problem for you, you are going to have issues without that gap or with it. And again.. it seems like a very easy fix that could be done a number of ways and well worth such a tiny issue. "I don't understand your point with prevent the keys from touching the screen. There are other ways to prevent that, e.g. small rubber circle around the display (MacBook)." - But the Macbook doesn't have a tablet. Would that solution work for it? Also, other designs lower the keys in order to keep them from touching the screen which creates problems when typing. "Clearly, the hinge's design was more important here than its functionality. What is basically defined as a design flaw. However, I think the device is pretty and yes, with that hinge also extraordinary." I don't understand this view at all.. if it didn't have the integral tablet design then you would have a little bit of a point.. but with the way they designed the tablet functionality I think the way they designed the hinge is genius really. And it's so rare to see people think outside of the box for just this reason.. because people think if it's outside the box it must be wrong - knee jerking. The whole point is for Microsoft to fill a void other hardware manufacturers are too afraid to do... that makes it all the more appropriate here. It's forward thinking and a specific design that's not for everyone. As someone who would be a perfect match for this device in terms of its functionality, it's designed exactly how I would design it myself having seen it. I love the style and functionality of it. Well well worth any minor issue that might arise. Also, when you innovate you are going to have new issues.. that's just part of design evolution.

As an artist, the surface pro changed everything in my creation process. Digital painting feels amazing with it, my art took a big quality leap and the combined cost of a cintic and a RAM-heavy computer for 1400 euroes was really attractive. This review is nice cause you asked an artist what she thought of the Surface book, but I wonder if it's a big improvement from the surface pro and if it's worth its price again. I mean 2000$ is the price of a cintic companion or a 24HD. Another amazing thing about the surface : you don't have to carry a tablet everywhere, when I'm having a boring class I just pick it up and paint, you only have to carry the surface and its stylus, instead of a laptop, tablet, stylus and cable.
@kiramoth2766
@kiramoth2766 8 лет назад
Well do you paint without keyboard anyway?
@kiramoth2766
@kiramoth2766 8 лет назад
Well, look at it this way : for artists, the best experience is painting on a screen, and we only had the cintic products doing that before, at very high quality and very high price that you have to buy while having a powerful computer. You can paint very well on the screen of a surface pro, and it works very well as a laptop especialy for students, so having both in one is actually a very good economic choice in the end ;D Ofc, I'm not thinking about uses outside of art, because i'm not that customer.

+Lothian Alimantado Shouldn't you rather get the Surface Pro 4 and save a thousand dollars? It has exactly the same CPU so it's powerful and unlike the SP3 it can take full advantage of the 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity in the new Surface Pen which I'm sure will greatly improve your experience. It also has an excellent new panel with less glare, better colours and a much higher resolution giving it a pixel density of 267ppi so no artifacts. The new type cover & trackpad are also really really good. I've not seen a single review where it hasn't been complimented for it's typing experience and precision when scrolling so it feels like a Laptop, not a tablet trying to be one. Seems like a better fit for your needs. I don't know.
@kiramoth2766

+Yanano Bere oh yeah, i bet the 4 is better in every aspect. i'm using my old surface 3, the whole surface brand works very well for artists.

+Lothian Alimantado Have you looked at the Sony Vaio Canvas Z ? It is a tablet device with the full windows experience. Simular to the Surface pro 3 and up. Except the hardware is massively more powerful. Faster SSD, and also a true quad-core I7 instead of only a dual-core. But what's BEST in my opinion for productivity. They keyboard supplied. It also serves as a screen protector similar to the surface pro's keyboard with the exception that it's bluetooth based and magnetic. i.e you can fully remove the keyboard seperatly and use it at an angle, or directly NEXT to your tablet as your drawing on it. I am not an illustrator; but i need to use the pressure sensitive pen for phtoo retouching small, fine details and to more quickly adjust gradiants with mixing brush over larger paths. I have a surface pro 3 myself, but i am annoyed that the keyboard has to be on the bottom, it takes up far less space and it would be far better to use if the keyboard could be angled or placed next to it - when you have the surface pro completely flush as low as it go for using the pen with. I've tried out the vaio canvas Z at the official Sony store in Tokyo - and it's amazing. Faster, more snappier and responsive especially for larger filter operations - but also that keyboard being anywhere you want it to be was just THAT much better for productivity and comfort. Do note I have also experience working on a 24HD and a 13HD - and whilst i`m not an illustrator ; i do think i can give some proper opinion on this. It is expensive though, the full I7 quad-core configuration with 16 GB of ram and 1TB of3rd gen SSD is like 2400$ That's also a nice point about it. You can stick it up to 16GB of ram instead of just 8GB where the surface pro maxes out.

+Dave Lee I was under the impression that a lot of students in the US at least have significant dept for their education, and many other parts of the world don't have the average income to invest in such an expensive device, which costs as much as several really high level private classes you can take if you are really looking for education. So Im wondering is this more of a fashion statement for a student or an actual asset, seems like an overkill for a non working student from where Im standing if you know what I mean. Other than that, kudos for teh review, really excellent quality and I love some of the tests you included of thermal camera and noise reader, havent seen that in other reviews.

+Andrew Maroni That sounds a lot more reasonable price wise and for student needs seems more than enough. After all bulk of student work is browsing the web, writing notes, etc. Not heavy duty multimedia work I would imagine. Maybe in film school or something. Unless I'm missing something.

+danny ashcroft That is exactly my point you see? How come you can afford this rather expensive peace of hardware but you can't refer yourself with "I"; and use "i", instead. No capital letters at the start of the sentence and no period at the end of a sentence. Are you sure you are investing your money wisely, my friend? As for; "I don't have a lot of money";... I guess that statement is relative. If the price of Surface Book is not a lot of money for that kind of device from where you come from, you my friend represent minority. With all do respect off course. :)

I don't understand why people don't like the gap... I think it looks very cool and it's distinctive. I also think it's perfectly designed for it's intended use. Plus.. there's plenty of other conventional laptops... Microsoft didn't want to do what everyone else was doing.. what's the point in that? If you are worried about dust I am sure you can find some solution.. you would need to keep dust out of the vents in the tablet anyway.

Great review. As a person who has to view and modify large floor plans and engineering drawings on the go, I think this is just the ticket. One thing you failed to show, and I wouldn't have considered the Surface Book without this feature, is you can reverse the screen and fold it down over the keyboard, creating a "tablet" with all the power and battery life of the laptop, albeit a heavy tablet. Not a feature needed by the masses but very important for users like me.

I prefer the hinge gap to the dreaded on-screen keyboard, so to speak, I see on a lot of standard laptops. Particularly in MBPs and MBAs, I see a lot of cases of the key caps touching the screen and eating away the AR layer, leaving ugly keyprints on screen. My own 15" rMBP is showing signs of that, though thank goodness Apple launched a silent repair program. But the gap on the SB looks like it would prevent that problem from even happening. Plus, when you swing the hinge back the other way, adds a nice ergonomic slant.

I wish Microsoft would release a "basic" Surface laptop, sort of like the Surface Book but without the detachable screen, a resolution of 1080p or so and a bigger battery. Apple screwed up so badly with their new Macbook Pros, the MacBook Air and other ultrabooks mostly won't cut it and I feel wary about the Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air.
@JasonChamberlain
@JasonChamberlain 7 лет назад
I think the surface pro 4 is the most "basic" they're going to get in the line-up (i.e. what they compete with the MacBook air with). Not even the surface 3 looks like it's going to get an update.
@ChristianFS1
@ChristianFS1 7 лет назад
+Jason Chamberlain By "basic" i mean "traditional". The surface pro 4 might be affordable, but it's nothing like a standard laptop (proper hinge, keyboard, trackpad and so on). i'd like to be able to buy a surface book with high-end specs, but without a detachable screen, a "standard" (1080p or 2k at most) resolution and a bigger battery.
@JasonChamberlain
@JasonChamberlain 7 лет назад
Christian Sand totally agree. That would be a great product. Not sure how it would work without the detachable screen by way of pen input as it looks like a kind of uncomfortable angle, even pushing it all the way back.

they're probably saving major design changes for early 2016 in the form of the Surface Book 2. That said, I honestly don't see that much room for improvement aside from the hinge aesthetic and maybe a slightly stronger battery when in clipboard mode.
@mercenary6496
@mercenary6496 7 лет назад
Little Lion it's not the final version. New one coming q1-q2 2017. This was just a new gpu base and more battery for testing people.
@LittleLionRawr
@LittleLionRawr 7 лет назад
Ah, I see.. But there's always room for improvement so if you think a product is (almost) perfect you are closing your eyes. I'm sure the Surface Book 2 would improve more than just the hinge and battery life. If not the designers are sitting still.. I might get a second or third gen of this product eventually.. It's a very interesting idea..

The Surface team focus mostly on Surface Studio this year and they aren't as big as Apple so they properly can't design 2 big products at the same time. We're gonna see the next generation of Surface Book next year. I hope the Surface team also pick up MS shitty phone device right now 'cause MS is doing terrible at it.

Great review. I liked that you showed thermal images and measured fan noise. The hinge doesn't bother me at all. It's nice that the keys don't ever touch the screen. Also, I always use a dedicated laptop bag or slot that will keep it clean.
@jollojakar8995
@jollojakar8995 8 лет назад
The gap is a design flaw. No one would choose to have the gap if it wasn't a necessary compromise. And unfortunately the hinge isn't enough to keep the screen stable when touched, so one wonders what a conventional hinge + kickstand would of been like. Maybe we'll see this in the Surface Book 2.
@butimnotagamer

Well, Microsoft clearly designed this product to be laptop first, tablet second. So there is nothing wrong with the "tablet portion" not being perfect, it is not designed to be a perfect tablet. Nothing can be a perfect laptop and a perfect tablet at the same time. I am afraid you are nitpicking here. I also don't mind the hinge, I think it is unique looking and pretty cool.

if you read this , you will become more informative and better in technology +Dave Lee I am a very technological man , in fact i know about technology more than the ones who design the devices , i like this review , it's actually one of the best out there , surbrisingly not much viewers or subscribers , but that's ok , the problem is that americans will always be stupid and go for an apple shit product instead of an effiecent other devices ... well anyone know about technology know what i mean , but that's not the point , i have some notes on this review : 1 - if you use the surface book in the negative position (other rotation) you will have a more powerful and better in all aspect experience than an ipad pro which cost 1200$ , you will have the 13 hours battery and nividia graphics and a full i7 working processor . 2 - if you used the clipboard you will have a good media and drawing and notes experience that works for a 3.5 hours , and nobody watches a full movie sitting down , first it's not healthy and second it's not a good experience whatever device you use . 3 - if you use the laptop it self , it's way way better than a macbook , you have windows and a graphic card with office package for free and a multifunctional elite Pen experience compared to a macbook 4 - you said that a macbook pro is a better media experience for the price over the surface book , first if you have the lowest price for the lowest specs for the surface book , it will still be faster than a macbook pro and you still have the tablet experience for only 1500$ , the macbook cost 1350$ , that's not an expensive difference considering the difference in speed and functionality and a better display and you can upgrade ram or cpu or ssd whenever you want , way way more options than a the shit you call macbook pro . 5 - you can see by now that the 1500$ experience giving to you by microsoft will cost you a 1200$ and a 1350$ = 2550$ by apple and not the same capacity or functionality. 6 - furthermore on the subject of media consumption !!! i can have a better experience than what apple can offer with a 3500$ , let me explain what option microsoft can give you : buy a microsoft lumia 950 which have a 577 ppi Qhd screen that cost 550$ and have a 20 megapixel clear optics camera and it's a better smartphone than the shit display shit looking cheap made iphone with the stupid camera and stupid audio experience .... next buy a pico - projector (the best out-there cost only 520$) and buy a microsoft dock which cost only 20$ and buy a laser Pen keyboard which cost almost 200$ ... all of that cost 1290 $ . - now all these are pocket sized , maybe you could use a small case for more convinient and i mean a really small case for them . easily connect the hdmi cable with the dock and the pico projector and connect your phone with dock and pair it by bluetooth (something apple users don't know about) with the laser pen , your smartphone can be your mouse , and just like that you can have a full windows media and office experience with one of the coolest ways (your phone is your mouse and the laser keyboard pen) and one of the best 50 inch 4k display experience offered by the pico - projector all in your pocket . now tell me i am wrong when i say that apple is dummest waste of money choice ever , i can have a cool and effiecent experience with only 1300$ that you need a 1150$ apple display and 1350$ macbook pro and a stupid 1000$ iphone to get near it . Technology is cool if you understand it .......

Suddenly the isheeps are quiet....lol maybe they just saw a super-mother better than their overpriced surrogate with no touch screen....do the right thing folks buy what is worth your money.......surface is better and more useful . Take a look at the old HP EliteBook 8540w Mobile Workstation, it has a unique touch bar, probably Apple (orange) copied it. Apple will never give you a touch screen on Mac because they will loose their market on ipad... sheeps need to wake up and face reality

+PhantomUnboxing That's the whole point. It's not a laptop. You're paying a premium for some pretty innovative engineering that allows to compute in ways that you'd never ever be able to with just one cheaper device. It's definitely pricey but there are few windows hybrids that can match what it offers. To get a similar experience using Apple hardware you'd have to get a Macbook Pro & An iPad Pro plus the Apple Pencil. When you look at what you get 1500 - 2000 too bad. PS: They also don't want to cannibalise the sales of their OEM partners.
@PhantomUnboxing
@PhantomUnboxing 8 лет назад
Yanano Bere But its not as good as a laptop or a tablet.... personalely I LOVE WINDOWS and am not much of an ipad user (i have an nvidia shield) but for the price of the ipad pro with keyboard it would be much less than the surface. Personally, I would rather have a laptop and a tablet then something combined. I think it should either be a laptop, or a tablet

Windows by far is the more powerful of the 2, and it has good legacy support and hardware support. Use both and get the best of both worlds.
