For 2021, Microsoft has finally fulfilled the dream of Surface Pro (mostly). The latest gen Surface Pro 8 features an updated design borrowed from Surface Pro X with smaller bezels and softly rounded thin sides. The display is larger now and close to a mainstream Ultrabook size at 13”, and as ever it supports pen and touch. The updated display digitizer combined with the new MS Slim Pen 2 make for a much improved writing and drawing experience. The convertible tablet that becomes a laptop with a kickstand runs Windows 11 on Intel 11th gen Core i5 and i7 processors, now with an upgradable SSD and still soldered RAM. Thunderbolt 4 replaces legacy ports. As ever, the Type Cover keyboard and pen are sold separately. Cellular options will arrive at a later date.

I... didn't even knew there was a 8 gig option still, I thought 16 was the new base for some reason! 😅 So I went to check my options. And damn me. Damn fucking me! An i7 with 16GB of RAM plus pen/cover combo is 1800 bucks. Jesus! Love the idea of the device, with those specs it's basically a high end drawing tablet for much more comfortable Windows eco-systems, but it ain't "high end" enough to be worth that price point imho. Gonna have to find some good deal when it launches here in Europe!
@RK-um9tu
@RK-um9tu 3 года назад
@@theinktician It is compared to iPads because most RU-vidrs are Apple fanbois who don't know the difference between a big iPhone and a real computer. As for lack of power, you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. There is no tablet sized computer as powerful, portable, small, light, and versitile as the SP8. 1. The Latitude is not a computer-tablet, it is a 2-in-1 laptop. 2. The x2 Folio does not have an Intel 11th Gen i5/i7 processor, it has an Intel Core M5-6Y54 processor (which is a joke).

People keep comparing the Pro to the Studio and other convertibles, and it's always weird to me. I suspect the reason the Pro isn't "niche" is that, like me, people want a free-standing tablet where typing isn't a nightmare and can be done quickly. My surface is often resting on weird places while I'm doing something else without the keyboard and I slap it on just to type something like this. The built-in kickstand and magnetic keyboard are still a killer app. The iPad doesn't do it, convertibles with attached keyboards don't do it. The only equivalent is the Galaxy Tab S7+ with the book cover, and then you're stuck on an Android tablet which, let's be honest, is way less convenient than being on full-on Windows. That's why I've had all three of those devices and I keep coming back to the Surface Pro. It is very expensive, though. If they sorted out Windows on ARM I think something like the Surface Go would be a better deal. As it is, for my use case, the Pro is just the single best computing device on the market.
@mademedothis424
@mademedothis424 3 года назад
@@Brian-jv8iy Having used an iPad (and other Windows convertibles) before... yeah, it's not the same at all. The stand on the surface holds any angle or position you want, it can stand up on next to zero footprint, it will stand up on your lap with or without the keyboard and it obviously doesn't make the thing any thicker than it is, being built-in. It actually makes for a pretty decent handle grip if you're free-handing the thing. And the easy on/off non-wireless backlit keybouard with a touchpad is also a whole different ballpark, aided by the fact that it's running a full desktop OS. You can sort of get there on an iPad and there are things the iPad does better, but my original point is that everybody keeps assuming that slapping a stand on a case or having a foldable permanent keyboard does the same things the Surface Pro does, and that's not true at all in practice. The details matter here.

Buying an SD-card hub is way better than a single slot on your tablet. The SD-card will get cooler while using outside of tablet. Beside that, connecting your device with micro SD-card like camera or smartphone is way safer and healthier, because those devices can protect your SD card while transfering files. Unless you want your SD-card dying faster with their limited lifespan. To conclusion, SD card slot isn't that useful as you might think for professional standards.

Great review. I am buying a house and I noticed that the developer had issued Surface Pros to all of their staff like contractors and seller agents. It really makes sense for people in those positions who mostly use them as a desktop with a monitor and then carry them to write notes using the pen. I like tablets but since I mostly use a machine like this as a laptop, I prefer a more traditional 2-in-1 or convertible. I currently have a first gen Surface Book which is getting a little long in the tooth but is good enough for what I need.

I always associate the particular smooth and warm feel of the Magnesium alloy casing with Surface devices. Also, the fact that they got rid of the micro-SD slot is really a killer for me. I'll keep my Surface Pro 7 until they bring a worthy successor. Such a missed opportunity!

Vocational trade teacher here, I find the surface pro is an absolute fantastic device for teaching. I used my i5 SP7 through Covid lockdowns where I had to work and connect with my students online. Having a stylus, MS whiteboard, OneNote and PowerPoint inking greatly helps communicate concepts both online and in person. The only issue I have with the SP8: no micro SD card, but that's honestly something I can work with. Long-term surface pro user here (since the 1st) - creative professional, now at my current company we have had 2 generations of Dell "detachables" as they call these where you have a keyboard cover. The 7200, quickly followed by the 7210 .. and now their latest and greatest just released a few months ago .. 7320 which is akin to the Surface pro 8 in a lot of ways with the increased screen-size (the dell has smaller bezels tho) and thunderbolt 4 ports etc. The surface still wins out for build quality hands down, and the extra 200$ i would rather pay over the alternative. For example if you use the 72xx or 7320 (both we have in i7 config only) - the fan is ALWAYS running. Even idle in desktop. If you TURN the unit from horizontal to vertical or vice versa, you will hear this sliced cabbage sound.. or that's what i call it. It's cause the fan starts chugging and making a weird noise when you turn it, cause the fan's rotation couldn't keep up with that motion. I 've never. ever heard a fan on the surface series do that, and i've been mostly using the i7 surface pro's. Even doing something ultra light (just running MS teams nothing else) the fans on the dell always tend to ramp up really quick. The surfaces don't really. Dell's cooling solution is pretty shitty. Then the dell detachables all are extra high, and don't fit properly in most 13 inch messenger bags from expensive brands (peak design) .. due to the fact they have extra feet on the side of the detachable keyboards to heighten the unit. This makes the unit have extra surface space akin to nearly a 15 inch device.

Love Surface line.

Hi Lisa. thank you for the informative review as always. I used surface pro few years a go and now I need a windows PC with 4K display and most importantly, the best available PEN. The display should be at least 15 inches. my primary use is chrome with about 35 tabs open at a time. No video editing. some light programming. I do research and I take notes on my iPad pro, but I need a bigger screen and equally fluid pen for note taking as well as windows operating system. what do you think would be a good candidate? Thank you.

I had a surface pro 4 many moons ago but it haemorrhaged battery life even when I’d shut it down, it used to lose around 30-40% overnight Microsoft tech support tried everything and It was replaced twice but same problem. Was very weird. Surface pro 7 & 8 look nice, especially the 8 with the 11gen intel but as usual they are so expensive but that goes with the form factor. Great review as usual Lisa 👌

I am an IT Manager and we have a split of Surface (Pro 4-6), Surface Books (1- 3), Surface Laptops and Dells. All of the Surface devices drain their battery while they are off. I have to plug in all of the unused devices every few weeks to bring up their charge to 100%. I have also lost 2 devices after they dropped to 0% charge. They just wouldn’t boot up (even after performing CPR on the device (look up CPR on Surface Pro to see what it is.)). This power drain has been one of my biggest complaints with the Surface line.

@@hafacah what is the main reason behind this?
@hafacah

@@eyhtwozed2606 Not quite sure. Could be "connected standby". This would require editing the Registry to change the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlPower - CsEnabled DWORD to "0" but then you won't be able to put your device to sleep.

Oh Lisa.. I now remember why I subscribed first time watching your video without second thought (more than decade ago I think). "(keyboard) doesn't have the hollow kind of whack whack whack" "when you switch (the pen) to eraser you kind of feel the pen scrubbing like squeak squeak squeak". I'm dead. 😂 This is all on top of the actual technical accuracy within the review. Just enough for geeks, and enough for casual people. Anyway, I'm happy I didn't get Surface Pro 7. Hello, I am a Ph.D. student and I need something that I could simply use as a tablet to write on (just like a pen and paper so that do not carry paper with me anymore) and at the same time be able to use a laptop that has a keyboard and can also use the statistics or other software in the class. I was thinking to get an iPad pro and a MacBook but buying both could be expensive. Is SP8 able to do both jobs? How long can it last? I have heard that Apple products are going to last for a long time (maybe even10 to 15 years). What would you suggest? I would appreciate your help

I have the surface pro 7 and oh my goodness... the battery life is almost laughable except for its frustrating and not funny. Seriously the thing dies in like an hour and a half. Or I will have charged it and then closed it without powering it off, and the next time I open it, 10% battery left. If it was my primary laptop/device it would be unusable.

Lisa, would you say this is a solid upgrade from a Surface Pro 6? Kind of sounds like it
@mobiletechreview
@mobiletechreview 3 года назад
Yes it is. I speak as a Surface Pro 6 owner. I use a Surface mainly for the pen feature, and the new digitizer and Slim Pen 2 combo are a big step up. The other reason is Thunderbolt 4. If those are important to you, then it's worth the upgrade. For horsepower, less so-- the new one is faster, but a Pro 6 is still very responsive.
@tim3172

@@viazel2796 No, it's not worthwhile to upgrade from the Pro 4 but it is worthwhile to upgrade to the much newer and more powerful Pro 6 to the Pro 8. Because... that's how anything works.

at this price I dd rather keep my s6 lite and pair it with some other laptop or maybe even the steam deck and super display for desktop apps. I would like to run more apps on the device. I returned it, as its just not worth it for the model I bought. I wish Apple would have a 2 in 1 device, but I guess with iOS 16, that's what the iPad Pro might be closer to.

I'd love to hear how many monitors this can fire (and in other reviews). In order to be able to use it *all* the time I'd want my 3 screen set up with a docking station and my 2 screen terrace set-up just on USB 3 Thunderbolt. I know MacBookAir is limited, and reason why the Surface Pro 8 couldn't fire 3 lo-res monitors? Currently using 49" 3840 x 1080 flanked by 2 x 27" 1920x1080 No need for USB, as mouse and keyboard are logi MX via bluetooth. Thanks, great review.
