Great advice. I just checked out your test on my microwave and yes, I had the same thermostat problem. And as I was looking for the model number to order the part for the microwave slipped off the end of counter and got trashed on the floor. Just as I was all happy thinking I was saving $150 I now I have to go out and get a new microwave anyway. If it wasn't for bad luck today I would no luck at all.

Hello. This is a great video that demonstrates one of the more common problems with microwaves. I have a similar problem where I was reheating a mug of coffee to which it finished and beeped to alert me it was done but then I heard it beep again. When I looked at the screen it was showing 0 (zero). The coffee was hot and the light was working in the microwave when I opened the door. I feared maybe this was a fault code so I tried to reheat the coffee again. I could punch in the time but the minute I hit start it died and now there is no power to the microwave. It's a Mabe microwave. I'm not sure if that was an error code but I tried searching online to see if I could find details but couldn't find anything. Does this sound like the same issue as you describe in this video? Thank you for taking the time to post this video.

what kind of thermostat was that one please? there's indication of Thermal fuse, cavity fuse and Thermoprotector fuse. the fuse that doesn't have continuity is 16Y KSD-40LC 70.

Hi Bill, I was getting grease off the top of a built in microwave and evidently got water in the little vent above the display. Suddenly, it showed all difficult to read zeros, plus some words that were not legible. Stupidly, I didn't unplug it immediately but pushed some buttons to see if I could set the clock. It did respond, but nothing was legible. Then I unplugged it. Anything, me or hubby can fix ourselves?

So there two screws in the back and then the cover slides forward. I should do this while the microwave it’s on it back

Hi Bill, I had a built in microwave GE that does not heat. After I found out the bad magnetron and replaced with the working one on the other microwave. It worked and heat up. but when I put the cover back on and started it. the microwave run for a few second and turned off. I took the cover off and restarted it. I working again. Do you have any recommendation for this problem? I am looking forward to hear from you. Thank you, Vuong

I have a Kenmore Elite MW oven built in underneath the cabinet. No display. Replaced fuse. Turn on...then about 40seconds later the power completely goes off. Someone told me to replace the board. I did. Then samething happened again. One thing I neglected was I didn't heat up a cup of water. What could be the reason?

I have a Sharp Carousel, Stainless Steel Microwave. I noticed about a week ago, that when I pushed the start button, it wouldn't always start and/or show 1:00 automatically in the time display. It kept getting worse, and then yesterday, when I pushed start, absolutely nothing happens. No cook time display, no motor running at all. The display will show when you open the door and push the inner number buttons or automatic cook times, and the light comes on, but when you shut the door and press Start, nothing happens. Any ideas? Funny, I just got a Viking Microwave for free! Has the exact same problem - plus the safety door switch on the front doesn't work either. By safety door switch, I don't mean the one that tells the electronics the door is open but the one that kills all power to the magnetron if the doors open. I gotta believe that's a majority of the problems out there (thermostat) !!! OK, my turn to ask a question. I have a Goldstar MH1355M microwave/convection oven combo from 1996. Yes this is a high quality microwave with many features. So I hate to just dump it. BUT lately the heating element or microwave end quit. The light and timer work but not the oven end nor the convection oven work???? So my question is, what are some possibilities??? And both thermostats are working. Maybe a control switch is out??

Thanks for the tip. I did this by-pass test and the microwave got powered for the first time since it stopped working (no power). Then I said I solved the issue. Tried to reproduce the test (by-pass) and it did not work the second time. What should cause this?

Now I know that the burnt up baking potato and the thermostat shut the microwave down down when it got too hot. Thanks. Not a costly repair to replace the thermostat, just have to have someone who knows how to replace it. I'm not sure I can remove the black residue from the burnt potato. Guess I''ll have to p;re-clean it and then clean it up with the scrubber several times.according to the video on how to clean up a burnt up microwave. Sure makes me feel a lot more comfortable, it's just going to take a small cost to replace the thermostat and lot of elbow grease. My brother is right, if you want to know something , there's a video on it on RU-vid.

Thx thx Bill that's an easy fix. I wonder if you can please help me fix our whirlpool . Model W 10292071A it is an over range style I shorted the light socket out and now the light under the external light that lights up the range does not work . The microwave and the internal light still works.

Awesome tutorial. Seems that I have the same problem. After watching your video I did the test and I am not 100% sure if its the thermostat because after unplugging and plugging the 2 female connectors to the thermostat it started working again and was able to heat up a jimmy deans breakfast croissant for 40 secs it didnt shut off (power still on) then my fiance warmed up some leftovers for 2 mins and after it finished its 2 mins cycle power is out again. Im going to try unplugging those 2 female connectors that plugs on the thermostat and plug it back in and see what happens. if you have an over the range micro you dont have to take it off the wall.there are only 3 screws that release the plastic vent grill on top and the control panel will pull out.all the internal parts and thermostat button are right there.thermostat is black and the size of your thumbnail. cost of part is $15..

I have a over the range microwave/convection oven and as your sample there it has no power. I was popping popcorn then after a min or so it just died. Do you think mine because of the convection will be the same inside? It is 10 yrs old but I love it I really would like to repair it rather then buy a new one. Plus can't afford to,lol. What do you suggest? TIA

after exhausting all other avenues I wish I would have found you first, tried the door switches, the fuze the inverter board the magatron...your fix was the one.

That looks like a thermistor, a device whose resistance varies with temperature, no need to replace it. Normally, if your m/wave has overheated and will not go on, leave it for an hour or so to cool down and it might work again.

Subscribed! Question for you related to a another issue that I cant find an answer to. I have whirlpool over the rang microwave that powers on, makes the plates extremely hot, to the point of shattering in the microwave and yet the food will be only warm to still cold? Any ideas? Thermostat? or should I just trash it?

good video, some things to watch out, the MOT, and MOC inside the Microwave hold LOTS of voltage. If you must work near there, discharge those components first, one jolt from those even if the microwave is unplugged it still holds voltage, and you could be dead, or very seriously injured. MOT=Microwave Oven Transformer, MOC=Microwave Oven capactior, of course servicing this stuff is best left to professionals. Its not worth your life.

Good Video. I have a Hamilton Beach 1000 Watt Stainless Microwave, Model EM0312ZC-X-1. It turns on, Light comes on, tray rotates, but doesn't heat. Took the cover off, Tested the fuse, it had continuity across the fuse ends. I saw two similar looking pieces screwed to the metal frame, and both pieces has two wires attached to them. On one piece the terminal wire that plugs into the piece, one wire was burnt but still attached but you could tell it got hot. Not sure what the two pieces are, but maybe it burnt out the component. Tested across the contacts and showed continuity across both terminals. So maybe these 2 pieces are the Thermostat. On you video, at the 2:39 min. frame it showed one of the pieces that I don't know what they are. Below the Thermostat to the Right. The Part # on the piece that had the burnt terminal wire pushed on to is: G KSD201 160. So what do you think Bill, I know it's a bit confusing to me.

@christopherFlores those types are hard to come by but by using a flat head screw driver makes it possible ... And to the owner of the video thank you tried your method and it worked now I'm waiting for my thermostat to get here

If you can't fix your own microwave, don't bother taking it in for repair as most often the labor will far exceed the value. Unless your microwave is under warranty.

I did this repair to mine over a year ago and didn't change the spade connectors and it is working fine. Ya don't change the light socket when the light burns out. You don't replace battery cable ends when you need a new battery for your car. These things are replaced when they are rusted, broken or corroded. If it ain't broke don't fix it. I'm just saying that if you do that then it's overkill. It's only a microwave not a rocket ship lol.

I would like to know why my over the range microwave malfunctioned after boiling water under it for spaghetti. Now it will not reset, It keeps going back to 3.5 mins. and then it will automatically turn itself on, then after it has cycled on the 3.5 mins then it will turn itself on again for another 3.5 mins. What is going on?

@Bill Newberry Need help, Our Panasonic Genius Sensor 1300W stopped working. There is power but when used it would only make a click sound but run and last but not least, could not open the cover because Panasonic implemented some type of unique screw. I've got a 30 year old Whirlpool combo Convection/Microwave. Same issue - plugged in but no power. I tested from the power cord in, and it lost continuity at the first thermo-protector - the one that sits on the magnetron. My problem is that I can't find an exact replacement for it. I don't see any heat burns on the top of the magnetron, so I just think its a part that has failed from old age. What would happen if I ran it with the thermo-protector on the magnetron by-passed?

Quick question. Our microwave keeps shutting off and coming back on but it’s the interior light connector. Or so it seems if you jiggle it the microwave comes back on. Is there a way to replace that part ? Or is it a motherboard issue? Or is it still the thermostat in disguise

If you removed the Thermal overload switch and dropped it on the floor like you did in your dryer video, do you think it would close again? Saving the cost of the switch? Just a thought.

Lol The first is not to jumper the thermo switch...it's to unplug that microwave and to discharge that capacitor (which he never mentioned). It can store & hold from 3000v to 5000v even after it's been unplugged and can kill you. Then 1st thing is to check the fuse!

After searching and finding tons of different theories and possible answers, one suggested just throw it out, you had the solution. Great video with a simple test. Thanks

My microwave just stop working out of no where and it's funny to me because I had two and the one for the kitchen went out the other day now just a minute ago the second one has just stop working out of no where I need help and fast it's a west bend microwave WHAT AM I GOING TO DO!!!!!

hmm that ge is about the same as mine inside. mine os from like 2005 or something. i checked fuse i thought and it looked good but not sure. since it is using a 12 volt battery to test it. did that have a schematic and troubleshooting guide in a envelope on the top too?

would microwave a wet washcloth and having cleaner sprayed inside mess that up? might have got some cleaner through the holes on top i guess.

My GE Microwave (built 2012) does not heat. The light inside turns on, starts the count down, but then I hear a 'click' and no hum at all! The count down continues, but no hum! Does this indicate the magnetron is gone? Thanks for any help.

Mine was even simpler, but similar idea--check power supply/fuses first, ie keep it simple. The assembler who plugged in the wires from the external cord to the various lugs on the power inlet module (spade lugs), missed the white wire's male side spade lug-- the female connector side (contained inside the plastic insulator) was not straddling both sides of the male lug. (Easy now, folks!). With current flow heating due to the poor connection, the insulating plastic melted a bit and the one-sided "connection" broke contact. 5 minutes to fix it, plug back in FIRMLY, and everything perfect. No $300 service call or new $500 microwave (I have a fancy one). appliancepartspros.com is a decent source for parts online. I have no affiliation--they are responsive and helpful.

My microwave turns on and everything but when I shut the door and try to heat sonething it makes a clicking noise like its engaging to cook but nothing is happening table doesn't turn nor does it start heating. Any suggestions???

Great Video,swapped out thermal switch($10 from appliance repair shop)and everything was good! Took about 10 minutes. Found out that someone thought the timer was on,but the microwave was heating up empty. This may have been the reason for the overheat. Thanks!

I have this same GE brand microwave. Everything works except it does not heat at all. Any idea what can cause this. I'm hoping it is not a magnetron issue because then I have to replace the whole thing.

dig this bill, I have 2 of the exact same Panasonic's that did the exact same thing. I took 1 apart and 1 of those thermostat sensors had melted those plastic crimp covers on both ends/in-out So.. I'm gonna try and gut 1 to fix the other. ? what u think ?

How would you fix a panel that stopped working. The only button that works is the 8 so now I start the microwave on 8:88 for everything I heat up. the llight works, the heat works just the buttons on the panel. Thanks for the vid.

Hi, The spring on the door latch of my Samsung Microwave model:SMH8165ST broke and I fixed it but when I put the latch back into its slots the power turned off and won't come back on. I have a feeling I either blew the fuse or the actual switches in the door but I don't know how to get at either of those things. Can you help me?

what if the microwave shows power, the panel works, the light turns on, and it sounds like it's working but it doesn't heat or the turntable doesn't work?

Few of My microwave keys wont work and once I turn off before the time on microwave is over, I cannot clear it off..

That is not a thermostat, it is a thermal overload switch.
