Mid Winter Megalodons

Even here in coastal South Carolina, the winter days are short and sometimes cold. We still do our best to get out and dig for something as much as we can because nothing warms up a shark tooth hunter like a freshly dug megalodon. Sloth Party is our go-to honey hole, and it never disappoints. I got a bunch of goodies today despite my lax attention to detail. I almost missed one of the best angustidens teeth of the day by throwing sand. I thought I was digging overburden and I just pitched a shovel full of gravel to the side along with a nearly 3 inch angustidens. Such a careless act forced me to check my privilege and pay closer attention. There have been many times where I struggled to find a common extinct tiger shark tooth, much less a sizeable quality extinct giant white shark tooth. I slowed my shovel hand to keep myself from repeating the grievous mistake. Of course, how would I actually know if I missed something? I didn’t think too much about it then, because standing there like a philosopher wasn’t getting me any closer to finding big teeth. Let’s just say the rest of the day I dug slower and I came home happy.

Been watching your videos since you started posting them. Just wanted to say I really enjoy them and keep filming those finds. When you hit 100 at Sloth party please show all. I've seen it requested alot and know yall won't let us down.

I been debating that in my head. Is it better to do it for 100 or when the spot is done and I can put them all together? I can definitely see the case for doing it for #100 but I think it would be an awesome tribute to this fantastic spot to put them all together at the end.

When you almost throw out a 3 " tooth , that's when you know you're digging BIG TEETH! Not to mention that you're at 96 Megs. Insanely Awesome!!!

its embarrassing to almost miss a tooth that big. i feel careless! it was in the sand at the top of the layer so at least i wasn't digging slow when I found it, i was just flinging sand. or what I thought was sand! excuses, excuses right!? At least I did find it in the end so I could share its harrowing tale with yall! thanks for watching!

I seriously looked at drysuits, but the whole bathroom situation sort of turned me off, plus I know I'd be punching holes in it constantly with the rocks and everything. But still... maybe someday. I ain't getting any younger. @@blackriverfossils

Why do these angustidens have such better preservation then the megs at that location?
@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils 8 месяцев назад
great question! the angustidens are nicer because they haven't experienced as much time in the turbulence as the megs. the angys come from the chandler bridge formation, that forest green colored stuff you see in my videos sometimes. that stuff doesn't erode as easily as it looks so the teeth stay locked up in there longer before they finally rinse out into the gravel piles that ultimately chew everything up. most of them probably got washed out by the water flow that created this particular pile so they might have only seen erosion this one time while the megs might have been tossed around multiple times. the ocean level has risen and fallen many times through history, and the megs probably got beat up during each of those cycles.

keep looking. you'll find one eventually. megalodon as a species lived for millions of years and lost teeth the whole time. There are innumerable beautiful teeth out there still to find in the US and worldwide.
