Every time I think about winter, I know there is a spring that follows. Every year after the leaves fall, the cold takes over the air, and the flowers wilt. But there is always new life coming.
I think about Abraham climbing a mountain with the Lord’s instruction: sacrifice your only son. But for Abraham, the ram was already in the thicket. But he had to go up the mountain first. Spring was already coming, but there was a goodness of the Lord he wouldn’t experience in fullness without the dark, cold climb. The Lord had already provided. For us, this makes me believe that no matter the winter, a spring will follow. Perhaps in this life, surely in the next.
There was a time in my life when I was in a dark winter: I was anxious, not sleeping, and didn’t feel like myself. I remember feeling like I was at the end of my rope when I met with a friend. I sat there with my hands shaking and poured out how I felt. As I stumbled the words out, I felt deeper and deeper anxiety.
But then my friend reminded me that I don’t have to run to find the Holy Spirit, but that the Holy Spirit will find me where I am. I had felt like a brick was laying on my chest, and after he said that, it lifted. I could breathe.
The winter didn’t go away all at once or overnight. I wasn’t lying in a field of daisies feeling the warm breeze pass by. But I was seeing the first blossoms of spring. It was a slow process, but beautiful all the same.
This song, to me, is a reminder that no matter what we go through in life, Jesus is our spring. We can be in the darkest season, but His love is steadfast.
“You promise You won’t leave. You will always be with me.”
He is good even in our winters.
