Middlesbrough's Lost Pubs 

good stuff - I havent seen a lot of these photos before. I've lived on Teesside for most of my life and it really saddens and depresses me to be reminded of the multitude of glorious buidlings we've lost thanks to the vandalism of the local council, who through the decades seem so ashamed of our history that they're prepared to drive a dual carriageway through the very heart of it.

I was born in 86. Lived over the Border til 2004. I will always miss living there. I lived on Marlborough Garden on Suffield Street. I miss hearing the older folks like Jimmy Donague, my great Grandad Alec and my uncles Ian, Lenny, Derek and Stuart coming out of the Steam Packet and the Ship Inn all singing "By the Light, of the silvery moon"

People flocked from mainly Ireland, wales and Scotland. That’s why most people of my generation (I’m 54) whose x 2/3 great grandparents brought their families here for work haven’t much English ancestry at all and will almost find Irish ancestry in their DNA because Middlesbrough had the 2nd highest influx of Irish settlers with Liverpool being the 1st, not a lot of people know that!

Congratulations and very well done in creating this video. This must have taken some time to produce but the time you have spent on it has not been wasted. This is a veritable time capsule of part of Middlesbrough’s life and the background music fits perfectly.

My Great-Grandparents , George Henry Leopard and his wife Harriet (Clough ) ran a few Pubs in Middlesbrough, The Royal Oak, Cannon street (1886) The Queen's Head, Dacre Street, The Empire Hotel (Swatters Carr) The Albert Park Hotel on Linthorpe Rd. It's a pity many of the old Victorian buildings have been demolished, they had such beautiful architecture.

So informative, didn't realise just how Middlesbrough has changed on a social level. Great video!

i grew up in thornaby( old thornaby) being catholic we had irish roots probably from the irish immigration to thornaby or middlesbrough in the early/ mid 1800s...of which up until the 90s we had the annual may procession in thornaby..im not sure it exists anymore as i left teesside and been on south coast since 1998...i lived in boro next to ayresome for a few years in mid 90s..i do miss the old teesside i grew up in so much has changed...sad to see even though the completely deprived area of st hildas totally gone,just like old thornaby half of it was bulldozed for the a66..all that history,cobbled,streets and livelyhood sadly lost with time..brilliant tributes in these videos i feel look forward to more

Hi, I have only lived in Middlesbrough for the last two years but love local history. I'm also of the age that remembers the local being the hub of society. The place you met your mates, found a tradesman to fix the leaking tap and generally socialised at. Sad to realise that era is long gone. Loved the video. Many thanks

Brilliant piece of work. Looking at these there seems large areas where there are no Pubs anymore. It also reminds me of how many different Beers that were available. I do NOT remember North East Breweries though. McCewans, Newcastle "Blue Star Pubs", Vaux, Camerons, John Smith "Magnet" Ale, Federation Brewery in the "Clubs" and Theakstons out in the Countryside.

Great pubs all of them - brings back great memories- i think i must of been in almost 75% of them. I used to work on the door of a night club called the Marimba in 1961 which was terrific it got me a job in the oil industry and i ended up in Texas where i still am - the North Riding used to have lunchtime variety bandbox where if u got up and sang u got a free pint those were the good old days i feel sorry for the youngsters today stuck in their rooms with iphone for company

My mum & dad trained to be publicans in the Westminster & the broadway about 76/77 & went on to have successful careers I remember staying there I will of been about 10 years old we were from billingham thanks for the memories

My sister and husband ran the Steampacket in early 70’s - I used to stay there during my early teens - the Ship Inn was just down the road and right next to it was a rag and bone man. Years later in my 20’s I returned to the same area to work at Redpath Lin Din Yard building modules for offshore oil fields - great memories

Really enjoyed that. So many old pubs I remember. My uncle Paul used to run (and live above) The Robin Hood (the modern one) over the border back in the 1970-80s.. interesting place !

Amazing to see how bikes were left outside without any fear of them being nicked...how times have changed

One pub that should be noted, and still surviving, is the Green Tree, on the corner of what was Baxter Street - but now behind the town’s bus station, and the multi storey car park......and the real Green Tree is still growing outside, where I used to play as a nipper........yes, still there, or at least it was a few years ago. 😁

What an amazing video - Extremely well-done for putting all the public house / hotel images together - that's some achievement and you've saved so much ! I'm 59 and used to deliver goods to some of these pubs around 20 years ago ( although they were more run down than how they appear in these lovely images ! ) .... Memories of my busier period in life came flooding back .... Thank you for this , it's truly an amazing video !! ❤ - Also, I didn't realise there were SO MANY of pubs / hotels in the areas shown ..... although many were much before my time !

Thank you for documenting St Hilda’s and I would love to see one on the priory, I only recently found out the font from there is in the Dorman Museum. Shame we can’t get Time Team over there before they build on it again.

Beautiful buildings instead of protecting our heritage. The council knocks em down to rebuild paper mach'e.

Stayed at the Masham in 1985 for a few days. My cousin ran it. Was packed most nights. Last time in the Boro 2017, I think, was some sort of shop for prospective business, I think. Could work it out, really. Living in Australia, I look forward to your videos and looking at the changes. I'm hoping to get back again.,in a year or two.

Young people of today may wander why there was so many Pubs in St hilders back then, over the border as it was also know. One of the main reasons was to quench the thirst of the men that worked hard in all of the steel works around that area that put Mbro,. on the map including my dad. Back in the 50s my uncle Tommy Higings ran the Eagle Hotel for some yrs then later The Cleveland Hotel Thornaby/Stockton nr the bridge.
