Midea 5,000 BTU AC Powered by My Solar Generator (Delta Pro) During Power Outage

In this video, I show what we do to cool our room when there is a power outage during the summer. We use a Delta Pro and extra battery, six 100W solar panels, and a Midea 5,000 BTU window air conditioner. Don’t forget… This setup works great when your power is still on but the AC stops working. Also, if you have a gas generator as well, you can run the AC on it in the day and the portable power station battery at night if the neighbors and HOA don't mind and if you don't mind neighbors knowing what you have. Then, if the gas gen is big enough, charge the battery up at the same time you run the AC the next day.
I’m reviewing our Midea 5,000 BTU AC. We bought ours at Walmart. The model we bought from Walmart is MAW05M1WWT. It appears to be the same unit as the one in the Amazon link, but there is a different model number.
During the review, I unplugged the panels for about 25 minutes or so to attempt to reposition the panels because there were clouds and a lot of smoke, but it didn't help.
For us, if we can stretch it though most of the day with solar, we can run it for much of the night on the battery. In the morning, I can use solar to charge it. If I don’t want to wait, I can take my Delta Pro to an EV station that is up and running to give it a really fast charge.
This unit is not meant to be a portable system. Be sure to read the manual for safety advise etc… For example, occasionally, the unit will need to be drained in humid environments.
You can buy a support bracket for the unit, if you like, when placing it out the window.

I've been experimenting with mine and what I've noticed is that if you have a window unit with an "auto" setting it can help to extend the runtime longer because it's not running the fan constantly and gives the panels a bit to catch up with usage

Smart. Smaller window AC is the way to go. Nothing beyond 6000 btu.

I appreciate this info!! I have a Delta Max 2 & just got a Wave 2 for my box truck conversion. Wave is a little underpowered, then I found out I need to buy a $140 cable to link them for DC power 😬. Sending that expensive thing back and probably getting this midea. The Wave used about 500w from the AC out and supposed to be 5100 BTU but doesnt feel like it, plus the design loses a lot of thermal efficiency. This confirms my Delta 2 can start it and my solar can sustain it during the day for my 100sq ft space. Thanks again for the video!

We have 2 of these units for the same reason. We also live in Texas about 70 miles from the coast and with hurricanes and the potential for power loss they come in handy. We paid about $140 each from Wallymart. We just used ours this week when the txp valve went out on the central ac unit and they take no time to cool down a room. We do have a dual fuel generator but I will certainly be adding a solar and battery set-up! Thanks for sharing your set-up.

Good setup I do the same thing. If you can spring for the media u or an inverter AC of similar btu's it's better. The media u 8000 btu starts up at about 800 watts and pipes down to about 300 to 400 watts constant after the room is cool

Its 55 pounds, rated at 720 watts for a reason, and almost $400.00! That eliminates it by itself. In one review, it says it is "Difficult, slow installation" and one talked about mold issues. And that seems true when I looked up installation online. Seems better fit for permanent install. I was waiting for someone to suggest that unit. I thought about it as well, but does not fit our needs. The one nice thing about an inverter air is it uses a lot fewer start up watts, for sure!

My Frigidaire draws 400w max and has soft start and slowly ramps up from 230w or so to 400w. Averages 150 bucks online. My Bluetti EB70 can run it in a pinch for over an hour on high but I use a 300ah LiFeP04, solar panels, and a 2000w inverter.

Looks like a nice little unit. I think it is very much like what I have except you say it has soft start. I cannot find anywhere online where it says soft start. Please forward link. That would be the one thing that I would like better than my unit. Mine uses 100 watts more at times but I think that means more cooling by more fan power, and my portable power station can easily handle that. The issue is about keeping the start up watt demand down. Thats why I want the info about the soft start you said it has.

I just bought this same unit to use with my Bluetti portable solar power station for a small off grid cabin. Once this unit cools the space to the desired coolness setting, does it automatically cycle off and on while maintaining the room coolness? Or does it just always blast cool air nonstop? And if it does cycle on and off, how long are the gaps between times that it cuts on and off typically?

I have a similar A/C suppose to put out 5000 BTUs the running watts is about 395 not sure what the start up is, i think its got a soft start because my 1000 Watt Bestek Pure sign Wave inverter doesn't even blink on startup. It really doesn't get that cold for my 144 sq foot living room. It 78 * and had the A/C running for about an hour and a half. The start temp was 81 its drop a whole 3 * whooo hoooo.The is A/C belongs in a small room its seem to get much cooler. BTW my Living room faces East, where i get about 7 hours of full sunlight that doesnt help to keep things cool.

Im thinking of buying a delta pro and 1 400 watt portable solar panel. Do you think that would run a 25 cu ft. Refrigerator/freezer for a good amout of time. Also I have a new Ai power 2000 dual fuel inverter generator. Would that help recharge the DP back up alo g with the solar panel at the same time?
@LoneStarPrepping
@LoneStarPrepping 11 месяцев назад
It all depends on the running watts your fridge uses. If you have reasonable sun on your panel, you will likely get about 70% of that 400 watts per hour for how ever long you can get that sun. The pro is rated at 3,600 watt hours but you can use about 80% to 85% of that. I have a video series that shows you how to figure this out. The gas gen would be a great idea. Maybe just use the delta at night... no panels needed and gas gen in the day. Then charge it the next day with the gas gen.

@way2kul4any1
@way2kul4any1 10 месяцев назад
@@supremeautomotive6749 while it may use a little more power when running with the water hitting the fan, the compressor should run less due to the increased cooling effect. Have you measured power consumption for 1 year with draining the water and for 1 year by letting the water hit the fan? Because if all you're doing is looking at the number while it is running, then you don't really know what the overall usage is.

The Midea 8000 btu with inverter uses less wattage and cools a larger area. The difference is window units with a built in inverter are more energy efficient.

I am from Texas too and I have a river 2 pro but I don't believe it has the capability of doing a setup like this, though I do plan on buying a duel fuel generator. You think a setup like this would work with a generator and extension cords run throughout the house to power the AC? The generator would be far away from the AC and I have CO detectors just in case of course
@LoneStarPrepping
@LoneStarPrepping Месяц назад
You want the generator outside where fumes cant get in the house. Talk with an electrician about the size extension cable you need. I dont see why a setup like that wouldnt work. I ran my propane gen like that.
