Having a basic familiarity with continuous controller and note commands allows us to configure a wide array of functions across many different devices. In this video, we look at building up basic MIDI control from scratch for five different loopers, using the same types of MIDI messages as building blocks. We also take a peek at each device's capacity for "expanded functionality" - using MIDI to do things that would be difficult (if not impossible) to do without it.

Since I own 3 of the 5 looping devices you cove, this is very useful. Thanks Andre!

Wow, the BS seems to be a great controller for the LP1! I just sold my expensive Faderfox controller that I was using. It had nice faders, but potentiometers instead of endless encoders and they didn’t really work for panning. Not sure about LP2, but from what I remember the LP1 has a great midi learn feature that made setup super easy. Think I’ll be getting a Beatstep! Thanks for making this great tutorial!

Thanks! The endless encoders can be a bit fiddly - sometimes they don't turn as much as I'd like them to, sometimes they turn more than I'd prefer. And one or two of the encoders seems to have substantially coarser resolution than the others. But, I'm really happy with it overall. :)

@@andrelafosse I have read that the acceleration amount of the encoders can be changed. At fastest setting will skip values and at slowest setting should not skip any values. Does changing these settings help at all or are there still issues?

@@struggleinprogress It's still pretty unpredictable even with the acceleration thing turned off. The knobs are good for broad strokes, but not very consistent reliable for fine-tuning things. I haven't tried other controllers with endless encoders, so I don't know how much of this is a Beatstep issue and how much may be the nature of that kind of control. I also haven't tried the Beatstep with potentiometers instead. Here's a telling thread: gearspace.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-and-electronic-music-production/1316789-endless-encoders-arturia-controllers.html

Great stuff, I enjoy a lot. does the Keystep also comes with an editor software? Thx

Thanks! Arturia has an excellent free desktop editor that can be downloaded, and I use it for both the Beatstep and Keystep.

Do you need the Zoia in the middle to pass midi to blooper? Can you use disaster area midi to TRS instead?
@andrelafosse
@andrelafosse Год назад
Beyond that specific Disaster Area TRS to MIDI cable, the Blooper tends to need to see MIDI coming from a powered source. Using the Zoia as a "through" box works fine, and coming straight out of the Morningstar MC8 works really well. The Beatstep, on the other hand, doesn't work by itself. (This is a moderately common thing - the fellow at Disaster Area I spoke to when I ordered the cable mentioned that he had a different piece of gear that was the same way.) Blooper's great, but it's definitely the most "MIDI high-maintenance" device I've used.
