Modern synthcybers have a MIDI output, so it doesn't matter if the device has a sound source or not. The biggest practical problem to be aware of is that the operation of the knobs is not reflected in the function modules on the DAW, even though they are expensive.
Thanks for your comment! While I agree that most modern synths do have MIDI output and can be used as MIDI keyboards, they're first and foremost synthesizers - and that stand-alone MIDI keyboards will never generate their own sounds. But, I understand your point!
