Midland Railway RoundHouse Carnforth Still Standing 78 Years After It Shut!!
It may be shut to it's old life as railway RoundHouse but the shed still lives on industrial way been used for log/wood company full of pallets and trucks coming and going all day.
But the RoundHouse still bleeds History everywhere you look but unfortunately it's falling apart one day there will be nothing left even with it been grade 2 listed they'll just let it fall down!?
So today yours truly takes you back to time what's lost but not forgotten and TE mooch.

My uncle, Sydneý Preston, bought the shed with Warren Construction in the early 1960s. He wanted it as a depot and workshop for his transport company and Warren wanted it for a depot. When we first went in, all the rails were still there, as was the turntable. Warren got a third of the shed, nearest the A6 plus all the outside yard and Syd got the two thirds nearest the Leeds line. After removing the rails and filling in the turntable, a concrete wall was built up to the roof, splitting the shed into a third and two thirds. I see they have moved the footpath too, as you used to walk down to, across the line, and up the other side. However, as you know, Network Rail doesn't like footpaths crossing railway lines. I don't live in Carnforth anymore, but the buttresses weren't there when I was around. A relatively new addition.

Frank Barton and myself built the Buttresses on the Truckhaven side in the early 90s. The crack in the front wall was due to too much animal feed piled against it.

WOW! No way it's amazing about all tales about the shed after life and work been done well your Buttresses still standing strong aren't they?

@@ThomasEdward I did some work inside the sheds repairing the floors and installing some drains. We came across the original floor and some of the inspection pits. The roof of the building nearest the Leeds Line still has the original timbers and iron tie rods.

Remember passing this shed on the Leeds train, back in the 70's and there were still some of the old buffer stops there ! The ash pits of the old L&NWR were still visible up near the carraige & wagon shop on the former Steamtown site circa 1976/78.

Great that you found some good photos of the shed. You said it dated from 1857 but actually it's a lot later. The original Midland shed was on the missing line from East Junction to F&M Junction. Philip Grosse's book on Carnforth station will tell you.

Very interesting, went there about 6 years ago to buy some old rosemary roof tiles to repair my mum's roof as there was a roofing reclamation place in there. Waiting for part 2 hope you mention about the steam engine that ran away from there in the 60s and got as far as about Arnside if I remember correctly. Keep up the good work.
