I loved the Stage Door tavern - we used to go there regularly to see Cold Chisel and the Oils. We used to also see them at the Royal Antler at Narrabeen. How awesome was the live music back then. We were lucky to be young then.
Excellent. That was the first time I saw the Oils. It was the Death to disco gig. Misex and I think the mentals also performed. I remember some tall dude towering above the crowd wearing a straw hat weaved through the crowd onto the stage. It was PG The Oils then proceeded to blow me away. I was hooked a fan for life.
OMG I wish I had a time machine to go back and see the Oils open for David Bowie with the Pixies AND New Model Army? Holy shit that must have been a show!
That is a fantastic recording--I love how 'fresh' and not quite 'crystallised' No Reaction and Koala Sprint are. I wonder whether this was before they had recorded Head Injuries. Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey are completely under-rated as a rock guitar duo, but they are both fantastic and unique sounding guitarists.
Agree about Moginie and Rotsey being criminally underrated. I personally rate them as the best duo I have ever heard in terms of the unique harmonies they have created over the years...especially evident on Place Without a Postcard and Head Injuries.
"I've been had by the balls all my life".....my favourite line from my favourite song. First saw the Oils in late '79 at the start of a brilliant year in Oz. Fourty years later they're still the best, especially their first two albums.
