Power and the Passion - Lyrics
People wasting away
In paradise
Going backwards, once in a while
Taking your time, give it a try
What do you believe, what do you believe
What do you believe is true?
Nothing they say makes a difference this way
Nothing they say will do
You take all the trouble that you can afford
At least you won't have time to be bored
At least you won't have time to be bored
Oh the power and the passion, oh the temper of the time
Oh the power and the passion
Sometimes you've got to take the hardest line
Sunburnt faces around, with skin so brown
Smiling zinc cream and crowds, Sundays the beach never a cloud
Breathing eucalypt, pushing panel vans
Stuff and munch junk food
Laughing at the truth, cause Gough was tough til he hit the rough
Uncle Sam and John were quite enough
Too much of sunshine too much of sky
It's just enough to make you want to cry
It's just enough to make you want to cry
Oh the power and the passion, oh the temper of the time
Oh the power and the passion
Sometimes you've got to take the hardest line
I see buildings, clothing the sky, in paradise
Sydney, nights are warm
Daytime telly, blue rinse dawn
Dad's so bad he lives in the pub, it's a underarms and football clubs
Flat chat, Pine Gap, in every home a Big Mac
And no one goes outback, that's that
You take what you get and get what you please
It's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees
It's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees
Oh the power and the passion, oh the temper of the time
Oh the power and the passion
Sometimes you've got to take the hardest line

You can see the loyalty to this song. Watch The Librarians. Peter Garrett does a guest appearance on the last show. Oils ain't Oils. The 3 series were hysterically funny. Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope did a brilliant job. Wayne trying to inpersonate Peter Garrett is timeless. Reminded me of the Blues.Brothers trying to get the band back together. Especially when he has to wear a skullcap. Brilliant series.

I first saw this on MTV. When MTV showed new music, or unlike now had 24 music function. This song got into my head. I bought the cassette at my local record shack (1980's suburban Ohio) I didn't get into many other songs on "10-1" at first. I went with my Parents to Australia in the Summer of 1986 (Dad went for a Medical convention in Sydney - Doctor using a convo' as excuse to travel, with family) We went two weeks before to travel, mostly flying from Perth, Darwin, Adelaide, down to Hobart, Tasmania, up to Melbourne, Canberra, finally to Sydney. I was 17 years old, and Australia was an amazing experience. When I got back to domestic Ohio, and High School, the Oil's "10-1" made far more sense. The "Diesel and Dust" came out...college, "Blue Sky Mine"...eventually saw them in 1994. I know they are active, touring, have recent live and collaborative projects. I really hope they get in the Rock Hall, as they are so damn worthy. And, "Power and the Passion, on MTV made me a fan!

That’s the ultimate irony behind this song, it points out how fucked modern Australia is AND became one of the most popular songs of all time here, and yet people rarely look at the meaning of the lyrics past Peter Garrett’s funny dancing or how catchy the main guitar riff sounds. A song about how society is continually degraded and blinded to its own demise by rampant consumerism, and yet it became a shallow icon of that exact thing- consumerism.

Peter knew all too well how fucking dirty this government was and is so I don't think he went into it thinking he could make any kind of change. They would not of let him in unless he swore to play by their rules, simple. The government big wigs are all put into power by the corporation owners, the owners of the Australian government. Your vote and everyone else's has never mattered or been counted and that's that, throw all the abuse you want but your simply wrong. There is something so mesmerizing to see Peter Garrett dance. Sad thing is, he is still a better dancer than I'll ever be.

love that drum solo. Completely novel (never heard a solo like that that in my life), and in the middle of a pop song! How many songs have a 'drum' and not 'guitar' solo ... and get away with it?

In all the years of hearing this song (and seeing them live), I just now picked up so much more in watching/listening to this video. The Gough Whitlam reference. The subtle takes on the Murdoch media empire. This was 1980-whatever, but JFC it's so on the mark for current affairs it's stunning.

michael davis You seem surprised. Those who have wealth, and subsequently, influence, will do everything within their power to retain it. And when they are no longer able to exercise these things, they hand them off to the next generation. The faces may change but the names and the games stay the same.

+Fook Yoo Fuck, you guys are caught up in the past! You're calling us white cunts and hating us because of what dead people did to other dead people hundreds of years ago, we are not fucking responsible for what the BRITISH EMPIRE did centuries ago, the White people who were brought here were basically slaves with the title of "prisoner". Would you rather the Spanish come and colonise this land? Or maybe the French? It doesn't matter who colonised Australia, it was bound to happen one day, massive fucking resource rich continent South of Asia wasn't going to stay hidden for too long. Also, why the fuck should YOU get any benefits? We were all born and raised here, you're asking for more benefits on top of the benefits you're already receiving? But us "white cunts" are down in the mines, out at sea and on the farms working our fingers to the bone for the country we were born in... you think we had a choice in the matter? Because I certainly didn't get to choose where I was born.
