Midori Ito - 1990 Worlds LP (UKTV HQ)

Another version of Midori's brilliant skate in Halifax at the World Championships of 1990. The late Alan Weekes who was a great fan of Ito's skating commentates in his usual understated and very British way as she thrills the crowd, although even the ever placid Mr Weekes gets pretty excited at her beautiful triple axel.

This lady single handedly raised the bar for women's technique... the first woman to do a 3-3 and the first woman to do all jumps as triples, and the first woman to land a 3A at World's and Olympics. Gracious, polite and with a smile that can light up an area. Quite frankly her form of joyous artistry always appealed to me more than others posing and posturing on the ice.

3A(3回転半じゃなくて3回転と2/3回ってない?) Her speed, jump, spin, steps, skating, and everything is exceptional. The 3A (Not 3 revolution and a half, but 3 revolution and 2/3 !?) is also wonderful, but a second jump of the 3T&3T shown in the second half is flying more highly than the first one. Feeling as a true spectacle and a dramatic skating. Midori Ito is the great genius who reformed figure skating in an athlete sport, isn't it? Even now, 30 years later, I hold my breath to see this. 4 minutes are passing soon. Midori Ito is really a Legend.

Debi rarely landed the 3/3 combo in competition. Midori landed the first triple-triple combo EVER when she was 12 years old - LONG before Debi even attempted them. Midori was landing triple Axels in practice in the early 80's. Debi Thomas didn't even do triple flip or triple lutz! Are you actually comparing the jumping skills of Midori Ito to Thomas? The only person who came close in jumping ability was Liz Manley, who was very inconsistent.

Only 2 seconds of run-up to the huge 3Lz, immediately slow down to 1 foot step and turns, then the explosive 3A, and what a soft landing every single time!! 3:07 eagle to 3Lo... difficult sequence but so smooth and beautiful. Loop jump is underrated despite of its difficulty. She controls the incredible speed changes by edge work, and even speeds up in the second half of the program to 3T-3T, so light in the air. Split-split-2A-crazy spin🤣 Her smile at the end is so cute😃

Midori was bad at figures but in 1990 she had a particularly bad outing, which is a shame since that was the first year she had a shot at the world title. She definitely could have won 1988 Olympics without the figures but Liz Manley had a shot too. Katarina Witt was over-scored in pretty much every competition she was in.

The truth is Debi Thomas and Katarina Witt were horrible free skaters compared to this. If skating were fair she would have won a medal in 1988. She wasn't even competing in the same event. Witt in particular was the most overscored skater in history. I don't think she ever was in a position on the ice that wasn't ugly. And she jumped like a hippo. I understand the rules were the rules then but they were all overscored in the long program, which should have been Ito, Manley, and probably 5-10 other people before you get to Witt. In that event, she might have won.

I saw her live in those days and I've seen worlds a few times in the last few years live. Nobody else skated or skates as fast as she did male or female. Why did the British Judge give her the lowest score of 5.6 I do not understand that ! I am British and I am ashamed that a British Judge gave her that score ! @floskate im having a hard time understanding technically. a flip takes off from your right foot, well at least in midori's case. a toe or a salchow takes off from your left. yes, the edge requirement for flip is inside just like the salchow but its still not the vaulting foot. just trying to understand the logic behind the 'triple toe salchow' term.....

Survey question to all Midori Fans: if there is one triple Axel execution that is the finest, highest, and most dynamic that Midori has done, which one is it? For my it's the her triple Axel during her 1994 dura soft colors technical program, clad in dark blue outfit. Minus the self-applause, I think that is the highest and most perfect triple Axel she's ever done. It would make sense given that she lost a lot of weight so she probably could soar higher during that time. What about you guys ?

I would say the one in her 1988 NHK Trophy LP. But I think the truth is, some of her attempts look more impressive while some look less impressive largely due to the camera work, namely, the camera angle, camera's own tracking motion, and how close zoomed in or how far zoomed out, and our eyes are always somewhat fooled by that.

The 1993 World Professional Championships technical program called Rose of Pain. Sandra Bezic said it was the finest 3Axel she'd ever seen. Second would be the triple axel/triple toe combination in practice during the Albertville Olympics.

I don't know if it sounds weird but I always have wondered, especially at the Olympics, why they can't give out more than one medal in figure skating? Like one for artistic and one for technical? That way it gives all the skaters a chance to excel at whichever side they are good at.

Any of her triple jumps is not even close to "under-rotated" which is really common nowadays.

Did he say "triple toe salchow" on her flip?

and they also used to call the triple toe a "cherry flip"

+Hazman Naim Besides the figures, I think she was held down some in artistry. This is a very expressive program. Just look at how the crowd responded as well. She was just labelled as a tech skater and didn't have the princess look. Under the current system her PCS scores would be the highest because of her incredible skating skills anyway.

It was all ordinals then, not points. She won the short and the long. But with 10th in the figures the ordinals didn't add up to first place. If Yamaguchi had beaten Trenary in the long program, Midori would have won gold.

True. And Kristi was the better skater. But being a team player, she did something never done before.Kristi fell----TWICE to ensure Jill would win.She knew Jill was no match for Midori,so tanked her long program.I lost all respect for her that day.

@@hennagaijin100 I don't think that is what happened. In fact I know that's not what happened actually. Kristi gave up skating pairs BECAUSE of that performance. She realized she couldn't skate both well and she really wanted to do well in singles. She fell on the salchow, her nemesis and one other jump. She was just tired. Kristi would never tank a performance for Trenary. Trust me.

the fact that there were only three 6.0's is ludicrous. did they someone could possibly put down a better technical performance?!

Doing their best to keep Midori down- and never tried hiding it.She was revolutionizing the sport. And they hated it.

@@hennagaijin100 Scott Hamilton used the same word when Midori won the 1991 Lalique tourney. During the awarding of her technical marks Scott said "it is hard to compare any skater to Midori....she has revolutionized the sport of ladies figure skating".

After this year they got rid of the compulsories. Trenary didn’t stand a chance of beating Midori after that. Midori moves ladies figure skating forward my miles in her career.

Every time I watch this I have to comment on the sorry excuse for figure skating that exists today. Ten Russian women who do every jump pre-rotated with their arms over their head moving like turtles getting about 5 inches in the air. It's unwatchable. Olympic figure skating was the most popular sport in the world once. Now nobody could care less. The speed, height, and distance on Ito's jumps have never been matched and never will.
