This is the Midsommar breakdown that RU-vid was missing! I watched it for the first time last month for a spooky spring vlog and was so astonished by how people give other people shit for enjoying the ending as a “happy ending” I know is morally corrupt as if by extension I’m a bad person? Like you said, media literacy is at an all time low (I have more proof - I’m a high school history teacher but I will spare you the details 😂) Great video!!

Yes please to the Hereditary deep dive! I adored Midsommar (and your deep dive is very interesting, thank you for sharing), but nothing haunted me after the fact quite like Hereditary. I recently witnessed a parent losing their child suddenly and unexpectedly and Toni Collette deserves all the awards for accuracy right down to the screaming in her husband's arms over the loss. I don't understand how Ari Aster was so aptly able to channel that pain and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

Love the deep dive and the film. It’s an interesting perspective to see it as a companion piece to Hereditary. Since both films deal with similar themes and I love seeing the mutual journeys through the eyes of a man and woman respectively. Brilliant setting, characters and dialogue that Ari brings along with his distinctive direction. Beau was definitely a miss but I mean the man can retire with Hereditary and Midsommar and still be a legend. Haha

Amazing deep dive! Love your flower crown and dress! You’re the real may queen! lol This is probably my favorite of Ari asters movies so far and the directors cut slaps! My horror cult got a copy and rented out a theater for a private screening! I really loved it when I saw it, certain scenes I remember more than others My horror cult also attempted to have our own midsommar party with correct food and a maypole! We did it right before the theater screening! It was pretty DIY lol but it was great time! Didn’t end up in bear skin in a burning pyramid so I consider that a win lmao This is perfect cuz the summer solstice is happening this weekend so this couldn’t have come at a better time! Great deep dive as always! I have to say that I'm currently a bit on the fence on the topic of whether this should be seen as a "good for her" movie or not, though you made some good points that made me think about it for a second time. I'm still leaning more towards the interpretation that Dani is also a victim of the Hårga in her own way and that her ending is not a happy one, but I can see how the ending is also symbolically about the catharsis of ending a toxic relationship, and that it's not meant to be taken literally. I don't see it as a "good for her" ending, but I also don't see her as the villain or a bad person in the end either. I also think there is a deep problem with media literacy if people are really pointing at the ending and saying that "the movie is bad because it teaches bad morals." I think the ending being immoral for basically everyone involved is one of the reasons it is such a great movie. Also the fact that there are so many interpretations of the entire movie and its ending specifically also speak to why it's such a great movie (even if some of those interpretations are not as good as others). One of the things I've also noticed that could be tied to the media literacy thing is that there seems to be (at least in certain corners of the internet, mostly on Reddit from what I've seen) a backlash against the movie from the pagan community, either because it's a factually incorrect representation of paganism or because it represents pagans as villains. And as a Nordic pagan myself even though I enjoy watching films like Midsommar, The Wicker Man and The Ritual where pagans are the villains, I also kind of get it because paganism has a stigma with racism and white supremacy and some pagans are therefore extremely vigilant about anything that associates paganism with white supremacy or just general villainy, but I've also seen some really bad takes on this. Like one commet I saw described the movie as "villainizing communal rural life and portraying it as bad and portraying modern urban American lifestyle as good" and I'm just like... did we even watch the same movie? Like you said in your deep dive the movie is also about dismantling American white male privilege and portrays the Americans as arrogant assholes who literally piss on other cultures. So yeah, there is indeed a problem with media literacy, and this film is a great example of it. Also I just have to quote my friend who after watching this just said that "the most unrealistic thing about this movie wasn't that there is an isolated murderous cult in rural Sweden. The most unrealistic thing was that they were pagans. Realistically they would have been Pentecostals or Laestadians."
@HauntedHippie
@HauntedHippie 3 месяца назад
That’s really interesting I wish I looked more into the paganism stuff because I didn’t happen to come across that criticism in my research
@HellbillyWizard
@HellbillyWizard 3 месяца назад
@@HauntedHippie Well, it's not really a criticism that even I have come across in any reviews or articles online, so I'm not surprised that you didn't come across it either. I've pretty much only seen it on pagan-related subreddits, so its a pretty niche criticism. However it's not a new criticism, I have seen something like that being expressed before online about films like The Wicker Man, and I think it's a theme that deserves to be explored in more detail.

just saw the DC in imax✨✨ i’ve only seen the theatrical and it’s one of my favorite films, this version was fun but not definitive for me. some of the extras in the front part like the argument and the extended part of the drive was interesting. the lake scene is mixed for me because i feel like even though dani stays because she doesn’t want to be without christian, her argument makes it a little harder to believe her going along with the rest of the rituals to me. I think the point of the scene that i enjoyed was it was the first time the cult mirrored dani. i liked seeing josh have a bit of personality in his fight. the thing with christian talking to the elder is that it makes it less ambiguous what he does but he’s still drugged heavily and while i think he’s more willing it’s still complicated as ari likes to be. also there’s that one scene where dani and christian kiss and agree to not fight, i liked that addition as it makes their relationship feel less one note, the whole cut really helped with that and when they are separated i feel it more. there’s so many complications with them in this version that made the ending better imo. at the end of the day i think the TC is better, some things are more ambiguous, some cuts were more poignant and i think the pacing flowed better, but god i love this film more each time i see it

I agree that media literacy is in the toilet with todays youth haha but anyone who takes movies so seriously that they let it influence them is taking it a little too far lol I mean I love movies so much but they’re not real life so they play by different rules for the sake of the story It’s sad that people turn to dogma to find the answers to questions and purpose but as long as your belief system is strong and good, you’re a good person in my book. Vilifying others just tears us apart. I personally loved the ending. Dani lost all she has close to her and now has this new cult family! It’s more like “happy ending?” But I love it all the same. As a Swede, it is obvious to me that this film wasn't shoot in Sweden, and most of the rituals, except the green pole dance and the herring eating, aren't common to our customs so it just looks fake to me. I think it is because it makes it feel like it is sunny all the time, adding to the chaos. But, the DC does inform Connie’s death by water via the child almost being thrown into the water and saved scene done at night when it is somewhat dark. I missed her in a wheelbarrow at the end. I didn’t know where she was until I counted how many people they planned to sacrifice. The DC makes it more a relationship film than straight horror. It reveals how toxic Christian was to Dani. But the theatrical cut has better flow. I still prefer the DC. It’s long but makes more sense. I wish Connie would have been one of those yelling for them to stop throwing the kid into the water and them asking Connie to sacrifice herself…acting like it is part of the play. I guess this means Connie is probably the most innocent death since she replaces a child unlike the men who are all jerks. Then again she dated one guy then dumped him…but came to the festival with both of them anyway. Awkward!

ah I LOVE this film, it’s was horrifying and amazing at the same time and I love to see deep dives and analyses of it, there’s always something more to discover. I’m finnish and we also celebrate midsummer here and learn swedish (and their culture etc) so this movie was extra interesting because of the information I already have!

A top 5 film of all time for me. Thank you for addressing media illiteracy, like yes they're both damaged people in a very damaging situation - it's really going badly for everyone you guys! Welcome to horror and fiction! 😭

I think they could dive off the cliff at 90. I think it would make more sense…the last nine years could be mourning them.😊

Christian is gang-raped in the movie in it's canonical form, but I think that's a choice that makes sense and I like the way the scene is done. It is meant to devide the viewer all the more. No matter how much we hate him, he is a victim at least as much as Danie and nobody deserve this. There's also a lot to be asked about whether he is even properly desired by the woman at the center of this group ritual, who looks quite emotionally disconnected, is clearly playing a role, and may well be after status in the cult,as much as any real connection here. I also feel like, I'm alway avoiding films just so I won't have to deal with a director who's skill I don't trust doing a rape scene that's just there to shock and beat up on audiences, as though that makes for a better movie in any genre and these are most often scenes involving women. This feels like a decently sensitive handling of what male rape might look like, which we usually don't think about in any cinematic context. It's neither trying to be fun to watch, nor shock optimally and create unnecessary trauma. I may be desensitized to some horror by now, but that'swhat I think. An abusive highly matriarchal cult does seem like one rare context where gang rapea individual men of by women could work like this. Sinse the cliche we usually see of cults involves dominant old men suounded by young women who get abused, this is useful to expanding the conversation. I remember at least one documentary that covered a cult where men explained accepted cult practices as sexually abusive to them. Cults are very much a matter of group power against the individual, so this repeat that theme while underscoring that all these foreigners endanger themselves by assuming they can take advantage of a culture other than their own while oblivious to the possibility that it could take advantage of them as much or more.

Midsommar has been on my nope list for a couple years now. I love horror movies but i seen an edit of Midsommar and there was a scene with the guys face and the way he looked at the camera traumatized me so bad i vowed never to watch it! As a member of the horror community, i've been so fascinated by it because everybody speaks so highly of it! So please let me know if it unsettled you the first time you watched and think i should get over myself and just watch it.

I think as long as you look up trigger warnings you should be fine. I was disturbed on my first viewing but it’s also just a gorgeous piece of cinema. Nothing close to a lot of movies I have on my own personal nope list
