All northbound Amtraks were running late on the Midwest Corridor in Central Illinois Saturday morning, perhaps due to the damage from the derecho that hit this area Thursday, the damage was far greater to our south. I got to see the camera-shy Train 300 (titled as Michigan Service on the card) which usually passes a little after 7 a.m.. Train 301 was pretty close to time on its limited stop run to St. Louis' Gateway Station running 98 mph through Towanda, Illinois, and Train # 302 was running about an hour late but making up time north of Lexington Illinois, running at 110 mph, making all stops to Chicago's Union Station. #amtrak #amtraktrains #passengerrail #passengertrain #passengertrains #railway #railroad #railroads #railways

Don't forget Columbus, Ohio. Whenever Amtrak talks about a National Rail Plan, I always wonder when Columbus will ever get a train. Peoria, done right, would be another place for one.

And Louisville! Lots of talk, little action, Could run Chicago to Indy (only tri weekly now) and Cincinnati thence to Louisville.

What if trains hit this speed more. On longer distance trains I bet our passenger rail system would be more used due to fast er speeds

Yes, it would be. The thing people forget when comparing America to Europe are the vast miles between major cities, and the lower population density. Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin are roughly the size of Great Britain geographically, but have far fewer people. But faster, more frequent rail service would be a boon to our country, so there would be less need for regional airline travel, and alternatives to busses.

I prefer the slow progress we are seeing, I just wish more states had been open to the funding when it was offered.

India has a big one up their sleeve though, and that is overhead line electrification. The US should be focusing on electrifying more corridors such as the nyc-schnectady line and the dc-richmond section of the nec to start.

These tracks have been here for some time, and we have some extreme temperature fluctuations around here. I am sure Union Pacific will take care of it.

@@centralillinoisrailpix453 UP owns the track? I thought the state of Illinois paid to build these newer tracks?

@@3506Dodge They did pay for the upgrades for Amtrak, but UP owns the line, and did all the work and all the maintenance.
