If you didn't know your friend or the family, the whole ride would be sitting in silence. Replace ice fishing for just fishing or fly fishing (in the east.) Replace let me know if you see a turkey with "buck" or "stag" depending on what part of the state you're in.

I live in Vegas but grew up in ND. Few years ago I walked into Target and the security guard said "good morning" so I look over and gave her the head nod and a "hey". She stopped me and was tearing up and said "oh geez, are you from the midwest?! Nobody ever says "hey" here. I just moved here and I miss home!" I just said "same, girl. Same!" And we hugged it out. Still miss home 😢

Oooookay, Uber story time: One time when I went back to visit my folks in KC (where I'm originally from), I hired an Uber driver to drive myself and a friend back to the hotel from some place downtown. She told us this wild story about how she had spent the entire day tracking down "the perfect watermelon" to carve and present to someone in her church community who was retiring. This story included her stalking a poor dude in a watermelon truck from the Missouri side to the Kansas side and freaking the dude out in order to pursue her watermelon, then having to drive someplace that had an ATM, making this poor dude wait for his money in a Wal-Mart parking lot and having a really long exchange in typical Midwest fashion about weather, crops and the pursuit of fruity goodness across state lines. When she finished this story, she told us the watermelon was still in the trunk of her car and she showed it to us when she dropped us off. To this day, it is one of the most quintessential "Midwest" things I've encountered and my friend (who is from CA) will never forget it as he brings it up to be in our conversations from time to time. So no booze, but a watermelon. Soooooooo Midwest.
