Munteanuioan, thanks for the educated comment regarding the MiG-23. Isn't it interesting that although the MiG-21 was a much older design...both the MiG-21 and MiG-23 were both retired from service at about the same time in the Soviet Union.
Neviem.
I've always wondered, since the Mig-23 was made in both a fighter and a ground attack version, did it perform well in both roles? Often, an aircraft works well in one role but not so well in others, and the more roles it tries to fill, the less effective it seems to perofrm any of those roles (case in point - the U.S. F-111 - though it was intended to "do everything", the only roles it seemed to perform "adequately" in was attack and electronic warfare).
Well the Fighter/Interceptor Mig-23ML Flogger G & MLD versions preform pretty well whey flown by experienced pilots. As for the Mig-27 Flogger it's performance is a little less. Main problem is you've got a ground attack aircraft with the thrust of the fighter version thus limiting you ability to staffing runs except at low speeds which is were the swing wing comes into play.
Nope the Romanian pilots liked the Mig 23 , and it had a good operating record. They considered this fast interceptor with a good payload a capable aircraft. The ex-Iron Courtain airforces were forced to retire the 21,23 and 29 pretty quickly because of major budget cuts.
The philosophy of the russians was to create cheap jets that could be mass produced. A MiG 23 may cost 5 million, an F15, 30 million. So spending the same amount of cash you have 6 MiG23's to 1 F15. Swamping your enemies airpsace with such a large number of jets would be very effective.
Interesting - could you say a bit more about the reasons why they were so disliked by the pilots? I know that the workload was far greater in 23s then in 21s but was there anything else?
Are there any of the Czech MiG-23s that have remained in airworthy condition since their withdrawal? If not, are there plans to restore a Flogger? I just ask because the other day I saw a MiG-21PF flying with a Czech insignia on RU-vid.
The MiG-23's were at the end of their life span of 1000 flight hours and I guess 20 years, they would need a general revision but that would be too expensive to do, so all were withdrawn, unlike mig-21's with 30 years life span.
Last Modification Was In Conflict in early 80 - s in Syria and Fighting With Israeli F15 and F16 and count after war was 54 migs lost - and 42 F15 and f16 - this is proof fact - tis is plane 3 + fighting with 4 gen planes - and count almost equal ;) !!!
Jinak by vedel, ze je to Scorpions-Still loving you a Scorpions-Coming Home.
Ano,akorat sem to uploadoval, nejaky problem?
Ono, MiG-21 měly životnost 30 let a byly dodány do 1975 - vyřazeny 2005. Prej.
No, no, no. don't build these Czech MiG 23's to be something they are not. Not my opinion, it seems to be the opinion of every Russian and Communists yearning for the "good old days". Everytime I point out how the MiG 23/25/29 have had poor showings in battle, they use the "export" castrated aircraft argument on me. These are Czech "export" models so they can't be any good. USAF Test pilots in Nevada hated the MiG-23, didn't want to even fly it. MiG-23 loses either way.
