The Flogger is definitely underrated. It has all the criteria of a good interceptor. The power/acceleration, payload, avionics(excluding Export variants, which were 'downgraded'), and ruggedness all contributed to an all-rounder performer. The ones that were lost in aerial combat were the less-capable version. Perhaps the outcome would have been more balanced had the regular variants and experienced Warsaw Pact pilots been in control. Good background music and some rarely seen footages. Voted!
I agree with you...the USSR didn't do themselves any favour by severely downgrading their export versions. I read a book by a Syrian pilot who flew the Mig23. He described in detail the characteristics of export version recieved from the USSR. The aircrafts lacked even the basic RWR system, so the Syrians never knew when they were painted / locked on by enemy radars (effectively flying blindly). The "Soviets" had a paranoia that any aircraft would fall into Israeli / US hands. Ironically, this led the Egyptians to openly criticise Soviet equipment, at the highest levels (Saddat once gave a speech at parliament, where he compared the Mig to the US Phantoms...using a bit of parody, he said that the Phantom did the fighting whilst it's pilots enjoyed a nap...).
@@reisnajem854 To elaborate on that, Egypt end out leasing their MiG-23MS to the US to test them when they changed their geopolitical stance, though I wonder if US intelligence was aware of how stripped off the MS was compared to the M let alone the ML which was about to enter service. Regardless the situation at the Bekka Valley was a really POOR mix of strategic conditions.

МиГ-23 вперемешку: МиГ-23М, МиГ-23МЛА, МиГ-23МЛД и спарка МиГ23УБ, которая без глубокой модернизации оставалась и служила УБ в т.ч. и для летного состава летавших на МиГ-27. 10 лет на МиГ-23МЛА и МЛД, около 1000 часов налета, включая инструкторский на МиГ-23УБ (да и самого и вывозили и проверяли), что-то да значат. Потом был Су-27, но снится МиГ-23...
А подскажите, пожалуйста , такой момент- взлет , действительно инструкция рекомендовала на форсаже? Как считаете , почему? С вашей точки зрения. Спасибо

I related, in sarcastic way, to Belgium incident from 1989 (when one of DDR's MIG23s flied to Belgium with no pilot in cocpit). However, in matter of your question of MIG23's retirement, I'm not sure if I understood correctly. Did you mean SU27 or MIG27 (ground attack version of MIG23)? Because comparing MIG23 to Suchoi is rather pointless (SU is next gen plane and differs in many aspects).

Such a beautiful, aggressive, proud plane! I remember seating in the cockpit of a MIg-23 in the Kiyv Military Museum and thinking that never in my life would I have the balls to fly one, let alone entering combat with it! We will never know what were the true combat capabilities of a well operated Mig-23, which is too bad. Those that did enter combat fared badly, but were poorly flown tactically and poorly maintained. Still, I think this beautiful aircraft entered service a bit too late to be competitive. It certainly was FAST!

Muhammad Shuginubi потому что миг был несомненно дорогой машиной, множество сверхмалых деталей и электроники с десятками приводов ещё нужно было собрать, на это уходило время. Кроме того, миг расчитывался как быстрый перехватчик который мог бы отбивать бомбовую авиацию сша, но он не был истребителем, из за своей маневренности которая равнялась кирпичу с 2 ракетными двигателями и ложками вместо крыльев. В итоге когда двигатели шагнули вперёд, новые дизайны могли быть как и маневренными так и быстрыми из за чего эти МиГ’и стали не так нужны, хотя в России они ещё есть как боевые машины.
Такое впечатление что силуэт этой машины рассчитывали на чертежной доске , а су-27 уже просчитал компьютер с учетом большего коэффициента аэродинамики .. все таки технологии не стоят на месте . су-57 как показатель
Incredible piece of engineering- was attacked by two on the 9th Nov 1987 deep in Angola whilst part of the South African Defence Force with the tank squadron of E-Squadron from the School of Armour in Bloemfontein as part of Operation Modular against the Russians, Cubans and rebel Angolan forces - the 23mm bullets landed a mere metres away from me and then they fired their air to surface missiles - amazing to witness but damn frightening.....I fired back with my 5.56mm rifle to no avail lol
Too bad there weren’t any Mirage F1 in CAP at this time, and the Angolans certainly knew it. I once met a former Angolan Mig-21 pilot from FAPLA that was taking a helicopter rating - a very nice fellow that ended up shot down and killed with a MI-8 some time after returning from Portugal to Angola - and he told me that they had standing instructions to always avoid combat with SAAF fighters, at least with the Mig-21, retreating to safety as soon as warned by their GCI. South African Mirages were highly dreaded.
@@duartesimoes508 Mirage F1 was a purely visual range combat machine, however... the higher altitude, faster flying, and BVR capable MiG-23 was virtually untouchable by the F1 as long as the "Flogger" stayed in its element.
The MiG-23 was as fast as a Ferrari leaving Fords behind in its glory days, but I gotta say even though I respect the performance in numbers, it was a maintenance nightmare or a hangar queen if I may and even the pilots were nervous in these things. You always had to keep your eyes on the gauges for height and speed, because this thing would accelerate on its own with its wings swipped back at its maximum angle and you could enter supersonic speed if you were admiring the scenery too much at high altitudes. The swepped wings system was not automatic, but only manually controlled and you needed to know exactly at what position you keep them depending on the different speed regimes you were using. You had so many things to take in account, that even its own auto-pilot would not work properly. But nevertheless, who was sitting at the controls of a MiG-23 was not any pilot, but THE PILOT, he could easily fly any other type of aircraft, because he had to be great at multitasking, maths, spatial orientation all these while trying to control an animal. It kinda resembles an old school muscle car with a V8 engine at least. No fancy systems, no security, no nothing...but it could smoke your much newer wheels anytime it wants. Great job with the video, it did reminded me of some old memories.
I had an aircraft-technician exam for this type in 1986 and repaired it for 2 years. I know everyone likes what they became familiar with in their youth out of nostalgia. However, this machine has always impressed me with its landing gear design, structural solutions, and shape; I still see it as the most beautiful. Regardless of many negative analyses about its military application from many sources, it would be great if pilots who used it in combat could write their opinions. Thank you in advance,

Underrated plane. If nothing else these would have caused trouble for the West just by the numbers of them. But the West as usual looks at a bunch of isolated incidents involving a few aircraft at a time, usually flown by second rate pilots with poor training and says "see, our jets won every time, so we are better". It wouldn't have worked like that vs the USSR.

Yep, Mig-23 had BVR more then 10 years before any F-16. And apart from the higher speed the Mig-23 was also better at vertical maneuvering, when it came to dogfights.
On top of that, while F-16s had provisions for BVR - this does not mean that they would get them. The issue is that the AIM-7s seeker is needs the reflection off of the target (it is an SARH naturally) to see it - the F-16s radar is weaker than most. This means that while the missiles flight performance does not change, the range you can fire at is shortened. This was a limitation not seen on PACT aircraft because their missiles came with a datalink that "talked" the missile in close enough for the seeker to find its prey, allowing you to use most if not all of your missiles kinematic performance. The R-24 missile on the MiG-23 had such a datalink (though earlier R-23s did not). It is rumored that in Mary (the soviets location for their aggressor training program) that MiG-23s would beat MiG-29s simulating falcons by firing their medium range missiles and either A.) The "falcons" would duck for cover, allowing the MiG-23s to gain a position of advantage starting the dogfight. B.) The "falcons" were caught off guard and at short ranges, incapable of evading the missile. C.) The "falcons" would bug out, leaving the MiG-23s free to leave home or strike other targets of opportunity. The MiG-23 would suffer in the merge though, and in hilly terrain the falcons could even ambush the MiGs - but in open terrain pre "merge", the MiG-23s start with an edge.
Export model Soviet made aircraft in Iraqi service shot down many original model US made aircraft in Iranian service in the 1980-1988 war. Iraqi Mig-23ML and Mig-21MF shot down F-14A Tomcats.
On the contrary - the early Falcons lacked any medium range missiles which gives a decisive initiative to the MiG-23. In CQC the MiG-23MLD (the standard by the early 80s) was on the heels of the falcon in terms of maneuverability. The falcons advantages come in its lighter handling, better cockpit visibility, and overall more friendly avionics (especially the user interface). But the MiG-23 is more than capable of fighting falcons. Later Falcons could come with AIM-7s potentially, but it appears USAF Falcons of TAC never carried AIM-7s at all. If we were to assume they simply had them on standby and then used them against MiG-23s, the falcon likely comes out with the initiative since the AIM-7F and M are better missiles (even with the falcons radar shortcomings cutting the launch range of the missiles). The MiG-23 kept right up with standards of the time, and the late models were practically MiG-29s in all but weapons and airframe. Extremely dangerous.

Once I saw a MiG-23 closeup, its not as big as it looks in videos, and its exhaust nozzle ("turkey-feathers") looked to be movable - the MiG-23 might have had some limited thrust-vectoring capability.
The Indian Airforce allowed only the best pilots to fly this beautiful aircraft when it inducted in the 70's. The tradition continued till its emotional decommissioning..!!

I had my picture taken sitting in the cockpit of a single seat MIG23 less than two weeks ago, a friend of mine I was in the Army with that lives in Texas bought one and I traveled down to see him, we were both Vulcan gunners in the Army back in the mid 80's and I never thought that one day I'd have my picture taken sitting in one, and especially that he would own one, I always figured if I was that close to one it would be dropping a bomb on me!!!

@@mac4018 Even cooler than that is several months before I got my picture taken sitting in the actual Sanford and Son pickup truck from the TV show, it's in the exact condition it was when the show was filmed, it's owned by a place in North Royalton Ohio called Blueline Classics, they have a website and sell T-shirts that have the logo from the driver's door on the front of them (got one when I was there), being a kid in the 70's and growing up watching that show it was the thrill of a lifetime getting to sit in it and have my picture taken, get online and go to Bluelineclassics.com to check it out, the people there were really cool, if you're ever in the area (about a half hour south of Cleveland) stop in and check it out.

Great vid. I chuckle when they put the camo tarps on. Hard to conceal any equipment that is near a 5000FT runway, clearly visible even today, all over russia. Love that aircraft!
