Has a nice side profile indeed, but I like the MiG-25R/PD side profile slightly more….something about the huge vertical stabilizers and ventral fins complete the look…..and this is coming from a slightly biased American lol.

i heard that this interceptor has some stellar landing speed , more than a f104 starfighter... it must be an hot rod of the sky. It's the same involved in the terrible ke007 flight. Great video and great choice of music by the way
The high speed for landing wasn't the problem later on. First Su-15 had 315-320 km/h landing speed Su-15UT had 330-340 km/h. Su-15 later model 285 km/h Su-15TM 285-290 km/h Su-15UM 260-280 km/h Compared to F-104 that had 175+ knots (325+ km/h) + 5 knots for each 1000 lbs of fuel, making it commonly around 185-190 kts (340-350 km/h). So Su-15 had at first little lower landing speed requirments, but later on a lot lower. The problem was the lack of modern navigational (INS) and landing systems (ILS). It had only a radio navigation. Meaning that in low visibility you needed very well know how to align yourself for the approach. So you needed really know how to navigate with radio beacons and follow GCI to get in the glide path, and then follow the ATC guidance to stay in glide path until you come visual contact with runway lights. Why they didn't have a ILS and such, that is just old school. As what else you really need when you have a GCI/ATC guide you in. You have radio navigation to get independently around the wanted area and basic knowledge of airbase where to land, you know about radar altimeter, engine RPM, air speed, compass etc and you get to home. But those low visibility situations are still completely nerve wrecking as you can be off by some meters and need to react quickly.
@@friknob6814 it may be late to answer but the main reason the don't carry guns is the airforces doctrines of that time, BUT in late 70's early 80's every interceptor was modernised to carry guns and ballistic systems for them, like Su-15TM and MIG-31 that carried gsh-23 guns
@@friknob6814 because an interceptor needs the highest performance possible, a gun takes up valuable weight and space, an interceptor would only be used to shoot down large bombers and reconnaissance aircraft anyway, and they assumed with the speeds of modern fighters a cannon would be almost useless anyway for shooting down bombers. These are not jets for dogfights, they were expected to take off, climb as fast as possible and get on an interception course with the enemy bombers, and in one or two high speed passes shoot down one or two bombers each, then return to base. They only added guns back to fighters when they realized they were important still for close range dogfighting, although they later found that it was important even for interceptors to have a gun. They would be almost useless in a full war scenario, but in localized incidents, it was important to have a a weapon that could be used at short range. Missiles could only be used at longer ranges. They had an incident in the USSR where the pilot intercepted an intruder; he had to get close to visually identify it before shooting. When he confirmed it was an enemy, it was too close to shoot with his missiles. If he waited long enough to fall back to minimum range the intruder would have escaped across the border. So he ended up stalling his own engine out trying to slow down enough to get outside the minimum range. They started making them fly in pairs after this, one to confirm the enemy, one to shoot at it. There was another pilot, a MiG-21 I think, who had to ram the enemy plane, for the same reason. So they didn't have guns because they were built for use in wartime, they realized that was a mistake and that they would have to use the planes in less than total combat.
Which Soviet interceptors had guns? I can't think of any except the various early and late MiG-21s. And I feel weird calling the 21 an "interceptor". It was a tactical interceptor(?)
@@GenAfterNextTactics on another video about SU15 I found this: (In 1981 a Baku, Azerbaijan-based Su-15 deliberately rammed an Iranian Canadair CL-44 after it strayed into Soviet airspace.) Maybe its the same plane as it looks torn up but probably made its landing since the damage doesnt seem too bad.
One of my favourite Soviet Cold War aircraft, yes it infamously shot down a Boeing 747 and one also had a crack at a Boeing 707 too! It was a true interceptor, fast and high flying plus it was well armed too. Loved the bits of the video where there's alot of Su-15s flying together, imagine at the height of the Cold War you're flying in an western aircraft you happen to glance out the window and see all those Flagons coming towards you! A much missed aircraft.
Awesome movie with awesome soundtrack, as usual, great work 👌. This videos brings me the mood to be creative and design paper model planes. Near that I watch them, during the planning and building, I listen them as a soundtrack, your musical taste is awesome 👍👍👍.
Wonderful ! The Su - 15 was a great airplane a worthy ancestor for today amazing Sukhoi designs..The technological milestones overcomed by the designers of OKB Sukhoi to morf this airplanes into the modern Sukhoi designs was truly a heroic epos a monument in diligence and patriotism to the great country which was the Soviet Union. Sadly besides all his great services this particular model became world famous in the notorious and in my opinion badly organized, managed and overreacted incident in which an civilian airliner was thrown to the wolf's and 269 inocent people killed .... a bad call indeed but a true monument to the spirit and stupidity of that historical era of mankind.
Funnily enough one of these was lost in essentially "combat" without any war being waged or any shots exchanged with the Swedes. An Su-15 crashed while trying to trail an SH-37 Viggen that did some high G turns that the Su-15 failed to follow, causing it to splash into the sea.
I'm sorry for hijacking your comment section, yolkhere, and I do not meant to badmouth soviet aviation or the people that were in it. Thank you for uploading this video. The Su-15 is a very intersting bird.
I had no idea this jet was directly descended from the Su-7. The Su7 became the Su-9/11. The Su-11 became the Su-15. And the Su-24 derived from the Su-15. By that time it has almost nothing in common left but the evolution followed those lines. The Su-7 was developed as a swept wings tactical fighter and then strike fighter. The same fuselage and engine was given delta wings and AAM radar/missiles, that was the Su-9. Upgraded radar and missiles, Su-11. Su9/11 was given twin engines and side intakes, bigger radar and better missiles = Su-15. The Su-15 was given bigger engines and attack radar and a twin seat cockpit and put forward as a new strike fighter with delta wing. The take off performance and low altitude ride was too poor, so they fitted it with a swing wing, and you essentially had the Su-24. So Su-7 > Su-17 > Su-20 > Su-22 > Su-9 > Su-11 > Su-15 > T6-1 > T6-2I > Su-24 The Soviets knew how to get the most use out of a design!
Many soviet fighters and interceptors suffered from weak radars. Su-15 was not one of them. The radar was so powerful that the real return signals were stronger than anything emitted by a jammer.
No, most Soviet radars were quite strong for their era. The just lacked the processing ability of Western radars. The radars in the Su-15, MiG-23, MiG-25 etc, would kill anyone standing in front of them if they were switched on on the ground. The brute force approach. The Su-9 and MiG-21 just had small antenna, because the shock cone location.
