biggest thing i've learn about your welding... is that what had walked in on the last minute of your video... that is something i have a hard time learning how to weld together............. a family... video might be 7 years old.. but the "stack of dimes of 6010/11" can not compare it. blessed be him with a good heart, and a S.O.B. that can put a weld down smooth.

Dude. You were born to weld. I have been a boilermaker for about 15 years in Australia . I have seen a lot of your vids and while I have seen someone slightly better at any weld you do , I have never seen anyone as good as you across the whole welding discipline. Keep up the great vids mate.

If only I had material to weld as nice as that. I work in a concrete plant, paint, rust, powder, varying material thickness, 1/8" to 1/2", AR plate, galvanized, very awkward angles in confined spaces, standing on i-beams welding sideways overhead... absolute nightmare. I mainly stick weld, but certain projects I get spoiled and get to use a wire feed, but even that can be a pain in the ass. Best weapon for many jobs, Miller Maxstar... Love those little bastards. Trying to talk my boss into a Caddy Mig as the 12VS is just too damn heavy. The only positive is that the welds don't always need to be perfect.

looks, like you just woke her up ... :-) Took a look on Amazon Austria for your Lincoln PowerMig 210 MP, but they asked "Are you looking 4 something special?" :-) I'm a bit envious, as my old MIG has no Electronic and nearly no adjustments - just a very unsensitive wire-speed and a 6 steps-switch up to 360 Amps. I think that mashine tought me a lot to rely on some kind of subconscious zen-spirit, as I had to do the rest by myself. You even learn to tear back in the right milisecond to have no burnback of the wire a.s.o. ... now you no, why I looked for Lincoln in Amazon ;-) Thanks for your videos! I have loads of work to do, but when a video of yours arrives, I sit down and relax for some minutes . . .

I have 20 years under my belt welding I hold three welding certifications with the Canadian welding bureau "CWB" 15 years of 20 I worked fabricating wood stoves. Most of the welds are run vertical down on 1/4 inch plate we used 100% cO2 with .35 wire. CO2 is probably the best gas to weld vertical down it penetrates quite well much better than argon mix gas . Only drawback with cO2 is it needs to have a flow restrictor. But overall cO2 is pretty good gas for down hill welds with good penetration.

Hey Jody, love your videos, I always watch them all. Up here in Canada (Alberta) we use a process called STT for all almost all of our heavy wall steam piping. Since our oil is so cold and deep in the ground, companies will actually pump hot steam down the wells, and to reduce turbulence in the pipelines they found that using wire roots in the field work best. It's a very similar process to mig.

True. Take a look at some of the downhill pipe welding videos around. Holy cow there are some world class jerks that want to comment saying how awesome they are that that you can't do downhill in the "real world". And that it looks terrible. Never mind that practically all oil and water cross country transmission lines are done that way.

Where I work 90% of the parts I weld are laser cut and bent on a brake press, so I have to do a lot of open butt joints and outside corners to join the seams. So this is actually pretty common for me.

Good idea using 1/8th" metal for practicing the open root pass. I'm practicing for open root 3g gmaw up on 3/8" plate with 3/32 gap and land with 37.5 bevel. The root took the longest for me to get decent. 190ipm on wire feed 18-19volts seem to work for me and other students. But we practice vertical up.

hey Jody quick question..I know you did a video on macro etching...not using house hold products ..what is the best thing to macro etch with ...great video
@weldingtipsandtricks
@weldingtipsandtricks 7 лет назад
the best thing to etch carbon steel is diluted nitric acid. it only takes about 3% nitric using water or alcohol to really bring out the weld. however nitric acid is not that easy to get and is hazardous. naval jelly rust remover works fine too but just take longer.

I replaced it with tubing and 8 awg stranded wire and how I have porosity on every weld no matter how clean it is. Flow is at 15 Cfm no leaks in the whole chain and I don't get any orange soot around the weld. I feel like I have tried everything Please help guys. Note I am sure Im using 100% argon

@weldingtipsandtricks
@weldingtipsandtricks 7 лет назад
there are definitely applications where downhill mig is bad. but for open roots with a bevel and gap, it is an acceptable practice as long as the procedure and welder are qualified. All passes after the root are uphill
