Jim leyland was so overrated. Before he came to a extremely talented Detroit teen he was a well below .500 manager. With the talent he had in pitching staff we should have won a couple world championships but he didn't know how to manage a pitching staff.

Umpires like this infuriate me. I totally understand that they have the right to throw you out, but Miggy also has the right to talk with the umpire and have a grievance with the calls. It was a bad call, but not a TERRIBLE one. I get pissed off at umps like Gorman because they don't seem to care that the tens of thousands of people in the crowd aren't there to see them. Many/most of them are there to see the only Triple Crown winner since the 1960's. I mean, this is the TOP OF THE FIRST INNING and he is robbing these fans of a chance to see one of the greatest players in league history. With age comes arrogance, just look at Joe West.

"..by rule there can be no appeal". But the umpires aren't walking talking rulebooks. They are there to officiate and yes make sure people are following the rules, but since the early days of baseball umpires have allowed hitters, cacthers and managers to air their grievances because it's an emotional game.
@Bitshitter
@Bitshitter 3 года назад
He blatantly swung around. Some debate on what is a swing on a checked swing: some say if the barrel of the bat extends past the plate, other say if the hands extend past the plate, still others say if the barrel of the bat extends in front of the hands. Here, the barrel of the bat extended in front of the hands, but BOTH the barrel AND his hands extended in front of the plate. All boxes got checked there. And it doesn't matter if he got hit by the pitch during his checked swing attempt - what matters is the swing of the bat during the pitch. If you swung, you swung. That's a strike by rule....

@HatchetHatter

You don't have to "say something extremely vulgar" to get ejected. If you argue a strike (or in this case foul) call, which he appeared to be doing, a pitch or two after the incident and don't drop it, you're going to get tossed 9 out of 10 times. He did have a legitimate argument, and I'm not saying he was wrong on that front, but arguing a call like this to the ump wasn't a very good idea. It doesn't matter if he's "the best player in the game". He still has to follow the rules of the game. In this case, MLB rule 9.02. "(a) Any umpire’s decision which involves judgment, such as, but not limited to, whether a batted ball is fair or foul, whether a pitch is a strike or a ball, or whether a runner is safe or out, is final. No player, manager, coach or substitute shall object to any such judgment decisions."

The umpires have way too much power to eject. This needs to be reduced, especially over calls of strikes or balls. If replay clearly shows its a ball and the ump calls a strike, how can one get it over ruled?? Its a glaring huge hole here. Someone also suggested to start using a electronic strike and ball zone that can adjust based on the players height. Its one way to eliminate home plate umpire. Since they have replay for outfielders, infielders, runners etc., its time to use replay for strike and ball calls as well. You will need a camera that looks straight down and one out straight out from center field looking at the line from pitching rubber to home plate.

+defiantone There was no reason to toss him out, he wasn't impeding play to argue, nor was he saying anything vulgar. He would've been much more animated if he did so. There's no issue with disputing a call as long as you don't take it overboard, and you continue to play the game, which he didn't, and he did.
@defiantone8556
@defiantone8556 8 лет назад
+EggianoScumaldo Rule of thumb when it comes to baseball & that is, you keep you're big mouth shut & don't try & show up the umpire or you get tossed. Simple but fact. I don't like it either, but that's just the way it works. That's why managers get the toss, whenever they argue balls & strikes. Simple but fact. Its like I said, Miggy should've just kept his big mouth shut & he didn't, & ya saw what the end result was.
@matrixphijr

That pineapple faced ump needs to learn how to not take an argument so seriously and just call the game.
@davewebb413

You cannot argue balls or strikes. Period. No matter what tone of voice you use.
@Timboslice475
@Timboslice475 10 лет назад
***** That's bullshit and you know it. Just because you have power doesn't give you the right to abuse it. Umps like this need to be gone from the league, they ruin the game with their gigantic egos when they throw good players and coaches out of the game for almost nothing. I mean, if the player/coach screams in the man's face then yeah, that guy needs to be tossed no question, but not when the player/coach says one fucking sentence to the guy.
@davewebb413
@davewebb413 10 лет назад
That's one of the big no no's in baseball and the ruling is, if you argue balls and strikes, it results in immediate ejection. I mean, what about players and their big egos as well.
@Timboslice475
@Timboslice475 10 лет назад
***** Well it shouldn't, I've seen plenty of umpires that can take a little criticism about their strikezone without going ballistic. And the players' big egos don't end ruining the game.
@wyssmaster
@wyssmaster 10 лет назад
Tim Peters The umpire could have ejected him when he first started arguing the call (which you CAN'T do), but he showed restraint and didn't. It wasn't until Cabrera started arguing a second time (it's pretty clear the umpire says SOMETHING to him before he gets tossed, which I'd assume was something like "Okay" or "Stop") that he got tossed. I'm also not sure what video you're watching, because the only person who "goes ballistic" in this video is Cabrera himself.

@MetalMoshin

Well he definitely swung and the replay made that clear, so I don't know why he would even argue that. I think the umpire was thinking the same thing, which is why he decided to give the ejection. The ump made the correct call, everyone knew it, yet he was getting bullied for it. What's he supposed to do?

Cabrera talking to an umpire about a weird play isn't him harassing him. He was wondering why he didn't ask for help. And then he said "he said I went, okay" got back in the box, said 3 words after a pitch and got ejected? It's the teams best player in the 1st inning. These old guys at the corners ruin the sport this way. It takes away from competitive integrity in every way.

"high profile hitters" are bound by the same rules! The guy went on the pitch that hit him...that would be a ..strike. Then he argued the judgement call thus earning him an all expense paid trip to the parking lot! These announcers are a joke!

I don’t understand why it matters if he swung or not when he was hit in the leg? I could understand the arm or hand or whatever, but how does his leg effect it? It would’ve probably been hit whether he swung or not...

Steven Juris Its safe to say he has the best left to right moving slider in the big leagues. If not just the best slider of any pitcher. Pineda as a right hander, has a harder slider and has more downward movement, but i dont know of anyone who can move a pitch side to side with more movement than sale, lefty or righty.

While I don't understand a lot about what goes on with the umpiring profession or the rules they have to learn, I understand enough to know that you can't argue certain things. All the people here who are criticizing the ump on his decision to eject Cabrera need to look at this from the ump's pov as well before just hating on him.
