In this series we discuss the dos and don'ts when migrating to SharePoint Online. These are really only 3 main strategies that you should consider, and then pick the correct one for your organization and situation.
It does not matter if your source site is SharePoint 2010, 2013, or 2016; you will want to plan for your migration following one of these 3 frameworks.

How to organize all content, assets, webparts and all the other stuff if there 1k and even more site collections? How to estimate the effort, how to communicate and to prioritize and plan when to move? And finally how to report progress and measure success? I build a custom tool for that for myself but now I really would like to see what your approach would look like for these topics... Thanks a lot for your work!

I'm a little late to the party and have only watched this first video. But I've got a migration coming up where they're going to migrate from on premises to Modern in Microsoft 365 but they want to keep their file shares on premises. So what you were saying about the various decisions you have to make about mapping into modern make sense and I've already been considering a lot of that. And it may turn out to be trivial, but I haven't really even started researching it how you can have everything in modern on the cloud that is 365 driven but when you get to actual documents and content, it's got to link back to their on-premises servers.
@henryott5070
@henryott5070 Год назад
any luck with this?
@stevedahlberg8680
@stevedahlberg8680 Год назад
@@henryott5070 It certainly had its share of challenges but that turned out not to be one of them. They had on premises SharePoint setup that hosted their Intranet and that was what needed to be lifted and shifted so to speak. Their file shares were kept separate and were not integrated into SharePoint at all.
@DeShonClark
@DeShonClark Год назад
Hey Steve, just now looking into this...quick question..when in the cloud, and viewing the documents on prem on the file-share, do they need to edit the documents? or do they just need to be able to ready the documents? If ready only, then I would recommend doing a one-way sync onprem file share to SharePoint Online document library. This way SPO can interact and surface the documents in a natural way.

Great video... how can I use SPMT to create a OneNote notebook from the exported folder content, which I have the OneToc and One files? Any help would be appreciated. I've tried and they only move the individual files and don't repackage.
@DeShonClark
@DeShonClark Год назад
Thanks for your comment! Unfortunately, I don't have the specific steps on how to use the SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT) to create a OneNote notebook from exported folder content. However, I would suggest reaching out to Microsoft support or checking their documentation for detailed instructions on how to achieve this. They will be able to provide you with the specific information and guidance you need. Good luck with your migration process!

hello, is there any strategy to best perform a migration from a classic spo site collection using variations to a hub modern ui sp sites architecture?
@DeShonClark
@DeShonClark Год назад
Hi! Yes, there is a strategy for migrating from a classic SharePoint site collection with variations to a hub modern UI SharePoint site architecture. In this case, you would follow the full migration strategy. In this strategy, you would migrate your classic site collection to SharePoint Online and then restructure it using the hub and site collection architecture. The first step is to plan your information architecture (IA) by identifying the hub sites and their associated sites. Then, you would create the hub sites and the modern site collections for each associated site. Next, you would migrate the content from the classic SharePoint site collection to the corresponding modern site collections within the hub architecture. During the migration process, you would need to consider the navigation, site structure, custom web parts, security mappings, and branding guidelines. It's important to ensure that the navigation is updated to reflect the new hub and site collection structure. You may need to recreate the site structure in the modern SharePoint sites or make adjustments based on the new architecture. Additionally, you need to determine how to handle any custom web parts that were used in the classic SharePoint site collection. You may need to consider if they can be reconfigured or replaced with modern web parts in SharePoint Online. Security mappings involve mapping the site owners and permissions from the classic SharePoint site collection to the hub and associated site collections in SharePoint Online. Lastly, you would need to update the branding to align with the modern UI of SharePoint Online. This includes updating the look and feel, page layouts, and any custom branding elements. Remember, each migration project is unique, so it's important to assess your specific requirements and consult with a SharePoint migration specialist or expert who can guide you through the process.

What if...you do a slow background incremental to Online (build and establish everything quietly on Online)...then cut over users to Online.
@DeShonClark
@DeShonClark Год назад
That sounds like a valid strategy! Doing a slow background incremental migration to SharePoint Online and establishing everything quietly before cutting over users to Online can be a good approach. This allows you to gradually move your content and infrastructure to the cloud while minimizing disruption to users. It's important to plan and coordinate the migration process to ensure a smooth transition for your users. If you have any specific questions or need more details on the steps involved in this strategy, feel free to ask!

what happens to your on-premise? Does it stay in tact until you decommission it or does the migration destroy it? I want to run in parallel until everything looks correct. Thanks!!

it stays in tack...the migration is a "copy" of the content from onprem to SharePoint online

What if you’re migrating alot of things from network drives too
@DeShonClark
@DeShonClark 10 месяцев назад
I love doing that type of migration...it saves the client a ton of storage space and it provides better management of security and access. I usually go file share to multiple document libraries (all under the same site collection) or the entire file share under a single document library with different security at the level 1 folder layer. The tech will provide you a lot of flexibility...how deep or wide is requirement base.

how to move sharepoint form from on premises to online
@DeShonClark
@DeShonClark Год назад
This is the biggest gotcha. SharePoint forms (info path, nintex, or custom forms) will not migrate automatically to spo... mostly because there are two different technologies here. We either use the oob form in spo, or manually create the forms using powerapps. Good to know this before migrating to ensure there's the right time and budget allotted.
