Bargain Basement Birthday. Daphne Fawkes-Bentley is throwing a swanky fancy dress party for her big day, and everyone including her pet parrot Miguel is invited. Unfortunately, a malfunctioning door to the cellar leads to increasing numbers of our regulars missing out on the fun. This episode was first broadcast on Tuesday, 9th February, 1999.
There's a lot of love round these parts for recurring guest star Elizabeth Estensen, having been the original T-Bag and all that, and she's on tip-top form in this. The way she goes from nought to convinced she's dying the instant she realises she's trapped, but even then continues to get gradually crazier - fantastic! (Have I ever mentioned Elizabeth as Marmalade Atkins's wet-behind-the-ears social worker? She's brilliant in that, and it's a Thames children's show which pre-dates T-Bag, so I wonder whether that helped her land the starring role.)
Elsewhere, there are some very funny gags - the alopecia and 'It's just the way the jacket hangs' lines are personal highlights, but there are many more subtle ones - plus we get to see inside next door for the first time, not to mention Katy all done up like Princess Leia. But on the whole this is a great example of a less-zany late episode of the show, perhaps partly because Angelo isn't too prominent. In fact, it brings to mind that episode of Bottom when they get stuck on the roof or that Red Dwarf when two of them get marooned on that ice planet - lots of good comedy and character, with plenty of room to breathe.
Look out at the beginning for a full ad break (featuring John Cleese, no less), plus some extended Children's ITV continuity presented by Danielle Nicholls and Ben Jones - the latter of whom also co-presented a The Top 10 of Everything around this time. (Thanks to Stu in the comments for that info.) Joining them in the studio is Nimmy March, a.k.a. The Lady Naomi Anna Gordon-Lennox according to Wikipedia, talking about her role in Whizziwig - a credit which seems to have been obliterated from her IMDB entry, incidentally. There's another show, though, that's very thin on the ground these days.
Many thanks to Lee for providing this recording.

I didn't know that they were still making this as late as 1999!

Yeah, the final series was actually broadcast in 2000, surprisingly. In terms of number of episodes, it's still CITV's longest-running sitcom.

You're welcome, as always! Making Elizabeth Estensen - "Mrs Bent Corkscrew" - a recurring character in anything would always improve it. :-)

How on Earth did they get Miranda Richardson's Queen Elizabeth dress from Blackadder 2? This is the exact same costume. M&A was made by Thames. I guess the BBC must have been hiring it out. It has a different underskirt, ruff, collar and supportasse, but it is definitely the same bodice and overskirt.

Good question. It's definitely very similar, but how can we be certain it's the exact same dress? I've no idea how anyone outside of the BBC would have got hold of it if it is, but then I really don't know how costume departments work...

Well, in my experience, costumes quite often get discarded after they are finished with, and quite often they find their way into hire shops, or they get hired to other productions to earn their keep with the original company. It wouldn't surprise me if this costume ended up for general hire. It is definitely one of the costumes worn by Miranda Richardson. The cut of the fabric and the beadwork is identical. Fabrics come and go out of style, and it would be virtually impossible to get identical fabric 13 years after the original costume was made. It is therefore hard to replicate a costume that faithfully. I make costumes myself for theatre, so I know a bit about it. They would not have spent that much on creating a faithful replica of Miranda Richardson's costume (expensive!) for something like M&A which isn't a costume heavy show, so they are more likely to have hired it or borrowed it from someone as a cheaper alternative. Maybe the costume designer had contacts... Anyway, to make a faithful replica, they would have to source identical fabric, beads, jewels, etc., map out exactly where they were on the pattern on the fabric, find or draft an identical sewing pattern, cut the fabric so that the pattern exactly matched the original in the final garment, etc. Highly unlikely, especially when it isn't a key costume to the M&A series. Not all of the costume used here is the original, which makes me think even more it is the original, as working costumes quite often get divided up and their component garments mixed and matched with other things to make other outfits. Bits go missing as quite often they stay with the other costume. Worse: some costumes get recut to make other things. I recently recut an Anne Boleynn costume skirt and turned it into a doublet for Demetrius from "Midsummer Night's Dream". It's a way of saving on production costs.

Ah, you've definitely got a good eye for this sort of thing then! Interesting inside info you've just given there - and I'm 99% convinced! One last potential alternative explanation, though: more than one was made _at the same time_ as the Blackadder costume. Would that be plausible? But then that still doesn't explain how one got to Mike and Angelo all those years later...

Doubtful they made duplicate costumes for budgetary reasons. There were two or three different QE1 dresses that I can see in Blackadder II, but costumes, particularly historically accurate ones, would be made from very expensive material. To illustrate, I have an original costume from T. Bag worn by Georgina Hale made from handwoven silk dupion. This fabric will set you back around £20 per metre, and there must be around 8 metres of the silk alone in the costume (£160). There are also loads of other fabrics in there, both for the look of the costume and also "construction fabrics", then the beads, trims, jewels and notions. The raw materials alone would come to at least £200, and then there's the hours of labour. Now my costume would have been far less labour intensive than the QE1 costume, which must have hundreds of hand applied beads, plus time consuming, historically accurate tailoring techniques that have to be done by hand, such as cartridge pleating. These things simply cannot be mass produced, and would cost hundreds of pounds in labour alone. Once these things are finished with, though, they are simply tossed aside as they are no longer needed. I have bought costumes worn by people such as Glenda Jackson that have spent years in someone's wardrobe having been sold at a second hand stall in a market. Another of Georgina Hale's costume I know ended up in a charity shop! Still more, I purchased from a costume hire shop, so this might be how the QE1 costume came to be in M&E. Sometimes the costume designer will keep pieces, and these people talk to each other, so this is another way that it could have happened; through contacts.

Interesting - that makes a lot of sense, and I think I'm convinced. I'm intrigued how you've managed to trace all of the ones you listed. (P.S. I also think I've just figured out who you are and which fantastic website you run - very pleased to 'meet' you if so!)
