His highest point of his coaching career was ending the 1940 curse. His lowest point? I'd say benching Dale Hawerchuk with his dying grandmother in attendance.

I once read about Keenan remembering the night the Rangers won the Cup. He went home to an empty house with it, his family having left him, and recalled: “I just stared at the thing and cried.” That’s life for guys like him.

In one instance while the Blues were playing the Buffalo Sabres at The Aud, Dale Hawerchuk's dying grandmother, who lived in nearby Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada, came to see him play one last time while she was alive. Keenan deliberately benched Hawerchuk for the game, and an unhappy captain Brett Hull screamed at Keenan, who then responded by stripping Hull's captaincy.

Keenan is a first ballot hof coach,, he did tend to burn out quick ( new teams) but he knew how to win,
@paulybeefs8588
@paulybeefs8588 11 месяцев назад
@@brando7266 Keenan didn't know how to win. He knew how to sell himself to general managers. He had a couple strong regular seasons and decent playoff runs with Philly in the mid 80's and then became an expert at leveraging that for the better part of a decade. Keenan knew how to talk himself into a position behind the bench of stacked rosters, and he knew how to convince others to look past their instincts that he was a bad coach. He also knew how to trade an overabundance of talent for a smaller amount of talent that was still capable of competing. That's what he knew how to do. He certainly didn't know how to develop talent or win in any situation where any hobo off the street wouldn't have done just as well if not better. The one and only Cup he won in NY was a result of the players rallying around the team's ACTUAL leader, Messier, to win despite him. Fortunately for the Rangers, Keenan had only been with the team for a few months and didn't have enough time to completely destroy all team cohesion or gut the talent from the roster. Even more fortunately, he didn't stick around afterward, so his reputation remains solid in NY. He had atrocious losing records with Florida, Calgary, Vancouver and Boston. And despite technically having a winning record in St. Louis, he is probably more hated and despised by that fan base than any other for absolutely destroying that team and any future it had for years.
@brando7266
@brando7266 11 месяцев назад
@@paulybeefs8588 I guess u forgot that he led his first 3 teams to cup runs( something they hadn't done in a decade)( phily, Chicago, rangers) if he's so overated why didn't those teams do anything after he left, ? Ps- his Blackhawks and flyers teams lost to Gretzky, and lemeuix, ( the two greatest players alltime)then st louis almost beat detroit ( another great team), granted his other teams were mediocre, but those teams were already in a shit state, can't blame him for making them worse, ps- he's a top 7 coach alltime, will be in the hof,
@paulybeefs8588
@paulybeefs8588 11 месяцев назад
@@brando7266 Is your question really "why didn't those teams do anything after he left?" when the only thing Keenan ever managed to do with some consistency is alienate his roster and bail for the next team when it inevitably went off the rails? I guess you forgot that Philly was already a powerhouse under Quinn and McCammon and had already been making cup runs and deep playoff runs before Keenan ever showed up? Or that Chicago's core was established under Murdoch and had absolutely nothing to do with Keenan? And why didn't the Rangers do anything after he left? Do you think it's possible Keenan sold out the future of the franchise? Amonte, Gartner and Marchant played 1,435 games for the teams they were traded to, scoring 457 goals and 970 points. In the playoffs they played 112 games scoring 31 goals and 58 points with those teams. Keenan acquirees Craig MacTavish, Glenn Anderson, Stephane Matteau and Brian Noonan played 166 regular season games as Rangers, scoring 37 goals and 64 points. They added 105 playoff games, scoring 14 goals and 32 points. And the Rangers are generally accepted as the exception for Keenan, since he at least managed to get a single cup out of a team that should have been a dynasty.
@brando7266
@brando7266 11 месяцев назад
@@paulybeefs8588 if he didn't make those trades, the rangers would still be seeking their first cup in 83 yrs, , ps- r u actually saying that Keenan is not a hof coach? Thats silly, and from what I remember, not many players were left from the last flyer team to make a cup final( 1980), as for the Blackhawks, they were nothing special before Keenan got there, and were mediocre after he left,

The Bertuzzi for Linden trade was bittersweet. On the one hand, Bertuzzi was at his best, a premier power forward and superstar that Linden never achieved. But at the same time, Linden was the captain, he was effectively the Canucks personified, take him out, the whole team collapses.

@SMC01ful
@SMC01ful 6 месяцев назад
Fantastic question. Unfortunately, for Mike it seems to be neither. His career post NY was where his many demons came home to roost, so to speak. Had he left it at NY, or had success elsewhere. The respect would def be greater; because, it was certainly hall of fame worthy prior to St Louis. All coaches have to be ruthless, but the skilled ones can be cold, but by and large, teams can see their POV, if not agree with it. Keenan, sheeeeeesh, after NY he struggled getting buy in. I respect the dude gave no shits, but it was that hard headed attitude which probably hindered his personal growth as a coach. In many respects, his success with Philly, Canada and the Rangers Stanley Cup, may well have re-inforced his mind-set. UItimately, I think of Keenan as one of those potentially great coaches, who couldn't get out of his own way.
