But his method really works. I put 2 inches on my arms and 5 inches on my chest from one workout every 8 to 10 days. It blew my mind. Every workout I went forward. Sometimes 2 or more reps with some exercises.

@@kandul3372 Yeah for years I was overtraining and didn't even know it. For my genetics if I train twice inside 6 days ZERO progress. If I wait 7, 8, 9 ,10 days. I go forward. My barbell curl for example was stuck on 11 reps when I was overtrained. Now I can do 21. Time to move up the weight. All my lifts have gone up and im 61. An age when you're supposed to be in deterioration. And it's all thanks to Mike Mentzers version of HIT. And making me realise my body thrives on that extra recovery and adaptation time.

I also started with every 3 days. But I had to change to every forth or even fifth day now (especially on leg day or chest/back day) You really should give your body time to heal and build. If you are so eager to workout on your resting days, do low intensity cardio

I would say 3 days rest applies to beginners!More advanced trainees need 4 to 5 days rest!
@jurgenbugmann8969
@jurgenbugmann8969 4 месяца назад
It all depends on the intensity. Usually beginners train lightly, since they need to acquire technique. However, if a beginner would work as intensely as an advanced lifter (going to absolute failure on the 3 stages of the movement), either he will get on the verge of a severe injury, or alternatively, he might need of 2 weeks to recover from that level of stress to the muscle.
@drossi101
@drossi101 4 месяца назад
@@jurgenbugmann8969 Beginners need less rest due to muscle size. Advanced lifters have more muscle hence more muscle damage requiring more recovery time.
@stevemann1299
@stevemann1299 4 месяца назад
Age is also a factor. And 61 I need at LEAST 6 days to recover. One week I had to go somewhere on my usual training day. So I trained a day earlier and couldnt get any more reps. The following week. I rested two more days. And got an extra rep or two on all 3 of my exercises. It's crazy how it works. RECOVERY is crucial.

This CONCEPT is similar to when you break your arm , knuckles , or maybe hair line fracture a bone , after the initial healing process from my experience the previously injured Area become stronger the bone where it was fractured is twice as hard and strong as before with extra bone growth, even tendons and ligaments will get stronger. Very similar at least in my mind it makes perfect sense. I just Finished a heavy Chest and back day yesterday and this Video answered the question I was pondering in my brain. Thanks Mike. I have always said the hardest part about working out wether it's MMA , boxing or Lifting, hardest part is Taking time off and not over train then food.

Tried Mike's ideal routine a couple times but always stagnated after a month or so. Trying again with AT LEAST 5 days between workouts and making gains again. Never thought I would need that much rest but it's working.

I tried Mike's routine way back when and I never made any gains whatsoever.. I had already been training for several years on a more standard bodybuilding routine and so maybe my body was already maxed out in terms of muscular gains anyway and probably no routine would have made any real difference unless I took some gear.. But all that aside I never like the heavy duty approach with only one or two maximum all out sets for each muscle, I never felt an adequate pump or that I could really stimulate the muscles with such low volume.. Just my two cents!

Mike's principals have helped me add weight to my lifts. I thought more rest would be bad. I actually got stronger training less but more intense. Used to do the token 3 or 5 day split. Had more elbow problems with all the sets and needed to save myself to finish the workout. Now I do multiple warm up sets then an intense, to failure set. I do it exactly as the program says take 72 or more hours off between workouts. Unbelievable. Why dont more people advocate this training style?

This video really highlights the core of Mike's brilliance. Critics of the longer rest periods point to their idols who trained 4-6 days per week with successful results...not for a moment realizing that steroids - which are "recovery enhancers" - were the reason they could overtrain and still make gains. If you train the way Mike suggests and you don't take steroids, you must take extended rest periods, or your gains will be minimal or non-existent.

Very good but short video. I would have to add that this advice is contingent upon the fact people even train hard enough to warrant enough rest. I did have another question if you wouldn't mind. John, what was Mike's advice for people who were skinny? Namely people who had been in the gym for years, but still looked like they had never stepped foot in the gym or looked like marathon runners? Usually the advice is to focus on getting stronger with a heavy focus on pounding food namely protein. But Mike did not take kindly to bulking or high protein diets so I'm curious to know what were his suggestions.

Recover and growth are two separate processes requiring their own timeframes. So if I understand Mike properly even if you are recovered you need to leave your body alone for a couple of days to let it grow..?
@therockiscooking4119
@therockiscooking4119 3 месяца назад
That’s correct. Even if you are fully recovered, or compensated as Mike likes to say, your body still needs extra time actually build muscle, or as Mike likes to call it, overcompensate. The best way to find out how often you should train is by keeping a progress chart or a training journal. If you are going up in repetitions, weight, or both, then that means you are giving yourself enough time between workouts for full recovery and adaptation (growth). If you are stagnant or going down in reps then that means you need to add more rest days between workouts.

I have no wish to question what has been said. However, the more times you complete the stimulus, recovery, growth process the faster will be the rate of progress. Therefore, going back to the roots of Heavy Duty, train with sufficient intensity, minimising the inroad into recovery by restricting duration of training. The body clock typically works on a 24,2 hour cycle Anticipate strength increases shortly after that time, and adjust intensity by using rest pauses for instance as necessary, but not instantly going to the extreme of maximum lifts. Waiting longer between sessions is futile unless growth has been stimulated with minimum inroad to recovery

You can still build muscle through higher volume and lower rest periods. Mike believed that high intensity with more rest was the optimum way of training. More bang for your buck. There’s no right or wrong way. Just whichever is best suited to the individual.
