Mike Oldfield and friends ( Steve Hillage, Pierre Moerlen, Mick Taylor... ) play Tubular Bells live ( part 1 of 3). THE best Mike Oldfield video ever !!!
I heard this on the radio today for the 1st time in decades. While it's not really my kinda music, it is a classic.. Reminds me of my childhood on the early 70's.
It was upon seeing this first live broadcast on the BBC in 1973 that inspired me to take up the guitar and start composing myself. It has remained the landmark piece of music in my life ever since. I never thought I'd ever get to see it again and as such, I can't thank you enough for this post.
Mike Oldfield was 20 yrs. old when he produced this piece of music history. It never gets old. A classic fav of mine. Did you know that it was Richard Branson of Virgin Record Label who signed Mike on way back in '72-'73? And Mike Oldfield became a world wide name. If you are a fan, I suggest you read his autobiography.
Exactly. Finally someone who speaks sense in this screwed up world! Modern music nowadays? Cruelty to musical instruments!! This is art in its purest form!
I so remember seeing this on TV as a kid. My sis had the album, and I listened to it all the time. Love Steve Hillage and the amazing Fred Frith. And Pierre, too. And of course Mick and Mike and all the rest. Half of these guys were with Henry Cow and Gong.
If this had been used as the background for an obscure animated children's film, it would have been forgotten years ago, but it's association and perfect meshing with "The Exorcist" has cemented this into music film history. It's still haunting to this day...
Longtime Oldfield fan here, first time I've seen this video. Thank you! What a time capsule. I saw Mike live in Toronto many years ago, one of the best concerts I've ever seen!
This takes me back around 30 years. Waking up early on a Sunday morning in my 18th floor apartment facing west. I turn on my stereo and the radio station just started playing the whole album. And as the sun rose, me with my coffee, watching the morning sunrise bathe the city scape with a surreal and majestic clarity with Tubular Bells as the soundtrack. I was entranced, it was awesome, I'll never forget it.
I didn't read all 10,000 comments on this, but I wanted to note that a large part of this band were members of Henry Cow at the time, Oldfield actually worked with that band on their first album. Fred Frith is especially important because he is not only one of the most amazing guitarist/ multi-instrumentalists of all time, he is still out there, composing, performing and collaborating with all kinds of people. "Step Across the Border" is a fascinating documentary about his music.
Thanks for this. I started watching it on BBC iplayer late one night - then wasn't able to finish. I remember playing my mum's record of this over and over again. I think the track was put on the then new GCSE music curriculum in 1986 or so, I was stunned! (- but then you should see what's on the curriculum now)
I knew about Tubular Bells from working at a local radio station in 1973. The Exorcist actually doesn't even feature that much of the composition. But the combined PR campaign certainly turned a lot of people on to Mike Oldfield who wouldn't have otherwise heard of him.
@2:37 the guy in blue on the synth is REALLY playing the bell sequence since the beginning !!! MI-LA MI-SI MI-SOL-LA MI-DO MI-RE MI-SI-DO ad nauseum ! Admire.
I had this album many years ago and loved it! If I remember correctly,,, he wrote and recorded it all himself! He laid in each track ind instrument, he plaid them all, individually! Cool yes? FYI
I so remember seeing this on TV as a kid. My sis had the album, and I listened to it all the time. Love Steve Hillage and the amazing Fred Frith. And Pierre, too.
This very unique footage was recorded live for the BBC @ 30-11-73 and connects various elements and musicians (Canterbury scene, beginnings of the Virgin Record label).
unbelievable, m/o did the full thing on his own i think he was 18 years old or something!! composed it and played practically every instrument also. makes me proud to be english. superb
One of my all-time favorite albums. I used to play it constantly in my teens. I've never seen this live version...brilliant! I used to get angry when people would refer to this as the Exorcist theme...It's so much more. Haunting, expressive, powerful
Yes I too have not seen the film from start to finish but I seen all the parts in between...aaaagh what a scary movie but what wonderfull sounds Mike is making!!!!
I have LOVED this since I can remember ( my dad played it when I was small). Never realised how CUTE Mike was until I was somewhat older (my 18 year old daughter agrees LOL). Just fantastic....love it!
Thank you for posting Parts 1 through 3. This takes me back to my college days... we played the hell out of this album. Still have the vinyl album, mint condition. This is when music was music. True talent.
How the FUCK can you compare the fucking king of pop and The Beatles who covered more ground than any other band has or will? (namely because so much as already been done now). Jackson had his music written for him, arranged for him, all he had to do was show up, sing, cash a check, and call the kids! ;-) THANKS FOR POSTING!! Man I've loved this since I was a kid in the 70s! Saw it played on In Concert & it was the "chit man"! Peace out y'all!
Gorgeous! This is art, love it! This calms me down and makes me feel like I'm on the other planet, other world....can't explain it with words..Beautiful!
@MrGordonPeel I recall doing my maths O-level revision to this.. I too have never seen this version and was delighted to see Mr Hillage playing, what a line up. Thanks for the upload Shaktidej.
I did far more drugs listening to this album than Pink Floyd or Zeppelin. Back then. This version is ...refreshing...and does 'transport me' to a weird but innocent time. A nod to those who did not survive.
